Summery: Just ok, Considering the hype from the brewery I suppose I feel let down and it's probably not Blind Pig or Russian Rivers fault. Anyway, this didn't strike me as anything special though. Maybe just because the market is flooded with mega hoppy IPA's. Anyway, its still incredibly smooth, rich and creamy. Definitely worth trying~

This IPA is average at best. It's good, not great. I don't understand the hype and people falling over themselves to get it. I'm sure it's because of the lack of accessibility outside of California or simply because it's a Russian River brew. Either way, I'd pass on this any day over Pliny. There are far more better IPAs out there that the average Joe can pick up at their local beer store or super market. So in summary, don't believe the hype on this one.

L: Pours orange tinted gold under a fairly persistent clingy 2” white foam cap.
S: Starts floral and then citrusy grapefruit.
T: Hop forward beer progressing through light fruit, light malt, light biscuit, long lingering citrus rind bitterness moderated and balanced by a light malt and fruit sweetness but overall it dries out in the finish. Hop flavors are above average, hop bitterness is moderates.
F: Creamy, medium body, medium carbonation.
O: A big IPA with complex layers of flavor and a delight to drink.

Pours golden with an inch head. Aroma is hoppy with notes of pine and citrus. Taste is smooth and crisp with balanced malt and bitterness. Happiness is just right and a slight sweetness. Nice mouth feel. Extremely tasty IPA that is underrated because of its shadow to Pliny.

6/16/16 bottle poured to tulip

Pours clear medium gold, two big fingers of off-white head that slowly settles, leaving some lacing.

Sweet breakfast roll and citrus on the nose, bit faint until it warms, when some sweeter citrus and deeper malt notes come out to play

Gloriously hoppy flavor, balanced slightly to the bitter side, bitter orange peel and a hint of pine, light malt and honey sweetness.

Mouthfeel is spot on for a big IPA, full body with a good lash of carbonation

Overall, I've really been looking forward to this one... one of the white whales in my favorite style, and happy to say it doesn't disappoint. Not too big, not too little, just a very nice take on the west coast IPA style, but not super-aggressively-bitter. Were I closer to the brewery, this gem would be in my fridge whenever possible.

This is a really well balanced IPA from Russian River. A slightly honeyed, sweet ale with decent bitterness that keeps everything in check. Bright hops with a citrus note evident. Very drinkable!

Pours a clear golden color with a three finger head. Wonderful pour. Head dissipates quickly leaving a little lacing and a quarter inch foam.

Smell is of pine, mango, and some sweetness like honey. Some floral notes mixed in as well. I was expecting a bit more aroma.

Taste starts with some malt with in your face hops. Pine, floral, and a little juicy. Bitter dry finish.

Good carbonation and crisp profile. Everything it's cracked up to be. Can't wait to taste big brother pte tomorrow.

A really tasty beer. I get a citrus and pine in the nose and the body is well balanced with the bitterness. It pours a nice golden color and finishes slightly dry. Really drinakble IPA from Russian River.

Pale amber (SRM 9) with thick white head; copious lace; great clarity and carbonation. Lemon nose with a whiff of grass and pine. Up front, citrusy hop/grass that is mellow pine in the middle; finish leaves a lite bitter hop taste on my tongue. Lite plus mouthfeel. Very tasty lighter IPA; hops are subdued with good balance between bitter and citrus.

Very good beer. Reminds me more of a pale ale then an IPA, but then again that could be because I did a side by side with Pliny! Def worth a try but not worth the hassle to get. . .

Bottled 4/16/15. Pine, resin, and grapefruit. Very hop forward but not a hop bomb. Lots of pine in the nose. Prefer it to the PtE I had last night, but that was was getting little long in the tooth. Would love to do a side by side of fresh BP and fresh PtE

Poured into IPA speiglau. Golden Amber color. SRM ~13. One and a half fingers width of white head. Constant trail of bubbles. Smell was incredible: pine needles, juniper, and grapefruit citrus. Taste was clean and refreshing: crisp beginning with a building of piney bitterness. Punch of grapefruit and hints of orange. Great resurgence of creamy foam upon agitation. Moutfeel was crisp and clean, ultimately refreshing without being too light. Overall, a heavy hitting IPA that stands formidably against most conventional DIPA. Great beer from a great brewery!

Bottle date 2-28-15, poured into a teku-really great IPA, kind of a perfect representation of the west coast style. Thoroughly enjoyed it, looking forward to more..

Had on tap at Stone Garden's and Bistro in San Diego

Pours a very clear amber with minimal head.

Smells lightly of citrus hops with a little tropical goodness.

Tastes fine, but somewhat disappointing. Is it possible for a beer to be too balanced? If so, that applies here. Just the right amount of malt flavor balanced by just the right amount of citrus from the hops. Mouthfeel and carbonation are perfect, and this is a VERY easy drinking beer. All that said, it's missing something. It's simply not juicy enough - not hoppy enough - not unfiltered enough. I like big hoppy, juicy, dank IPAs, and Blind Pig drinks a lot more like a session pale ale.

Blind Pig is a classic, and it's a good beer, but it's getting a little long in the tooth. I wouldn't go out of my way to find it again, but I'd happily drink a few on tap if it was available. My wife loved it, so ymmv.

Thanks to Orthodoxkardia for this one.

510mL bottle. Pours a translucent light amber color with a thin layer of head. Lots of lacing. The aroma is grapefruit, orange, mango and pine. The taste is more of the piney hops with some grapefruit and citrus notes. Bitter but with a nice amount of malt flavor. Some more pine and a hint of floral notes towards the end. Grapefruit and orange finish. Very drinkable. Light mouthfeel. Overall, outstanding IPa.

Exceptional flavor that increases the more I drink. Sessionable for sure. Quality ingredients that don't destroy my fragile antibiotic ridden stomach. Lingering flavor that makes me craze another one instantly.

It is hard to find another IPA that can top this one folks. Pliny is great but a totally different animal in my opinion. The piggy never fails me in bottle or on tap.

Light amber with a touch of orange and a big white fluffy head that laces well. Very straightforward nose, it smells like grapefruit. Taste follows with a touch of honey like sweetness and big grapefruit flavor. Simple but very good profile. Nice bright carbonation and a dry finish. This is a great IPA, simple but executed so well.

Very clear, translucent orange-gold with a thin white head.

Aroma of Cara cara oranges and sweet pine; maybe a bit of mango.

Tastes closely follows the nose; pretty sweet, dark orange with a soft but notable piney balance. The finish moves toward slightly bitter orange/grapefruit; definitely a west-coast style balance. Mostly sweet and light malt, but with a touch of toast or bread to accompany the resinous finish.

Medium to well-bodied, smooth, with a light carbonation. A very slightly crisp finish.

Overall a very nice, drinkable, west-coast style American IPA. Pairs fantastically with Jeff Bridges' "Sleeping Tapes."

Got this bad boy from a great west coast BA'er thanks again @wesasmith!

A: Nice amber color, bubbly with a small white head that didn't stick around for long.

S: Great pine hoppy aromas. Getting some citrus as well but its west coast pine all the way.

T: Taste certainly follows the nose--solid hop bomb comes at the palate, but softens with a nice balance of malt. Grapefruit flavor, maybe some pineapple.

M: A little high on the carbonation, but great medium mouthfeel.

O: I can see why there's buzz around this beer--PTE gets the glory but don't overlook this solid IPA from RR. Hard to find much here I don't like, but I guess the nose could have been slightly more fragrant and back off on the carbonation a bit. Would love to have this again and glad I had the chance to try this one!

Got this 3 weeks old as a gift from a great friend and fellow BA. Taste was a very crisp hop bitterness that didn't hurt like some IPAs. Not as refreshing as Pliny but very quality. Pours a clear dark orange with bright white head and lacing. Smells of pine and fresh mountain foliage with a hint of citrus hiding. Very refreshing but if given the choice I'd give the nod to Pliny.

A big shout out to Hopasouras for hooking me up with this beer on my first beer trade!
After tasting Pliny, this was the next beer for me to try and I wasn't disappointed.

A - Beautiful pale orange color. Very clear like it was bottled in the middle of the bright tank with a fluffy coarse white head and great lacing that keeps a foam cap the entire time.

S - Good hop fragrance with citrus and a tilt toward the fruitier hops. There is some orange, pine, and herbal that are very similar to Pliny but this one has more of a tropical fruit character and more of a malt tone. Less fragrant than the great Pliny but I really love the slight mango fruit character.

T - Great hop flavor. More flavor than the smell would suggest but the same notes come through. Lots of grapefruit, citrus, mango, and then there is some resin and herbal. This one is less balanced with more the focus on the hops but with an objective of drinkability. The bitterness is lighter than any DIPA but is still there giving credence to the amount of hops present. It is very clean through out which is a hallmark of a more sessionable beer and not necessarily a more full-flavored, palate wrecker.

M - Medium to light mouth-feel with medium carbonation. It has plenty of flavor but is not going to dissuade you from drinking more or switching gears to a different beer or beer style. Maybe follow this up with a Consecration.

Overall, this is a very good example of a West Coast IPA. The more tropical fruit character and a notch down in the overall intensity definitely make the Blind Pig different than Pliny but still very tasty. If you get the chance to get your hands on Russian River I would stick with Pliny but if you've had the DIPA before I would strongly recommend getting this IPA.

If this was made at a different brewery it would get a lot more love but in the company of Elder and Younger it gets lost sometimes. One of the best single IPA's out there.
