A: Pours a light golden with a foamy white head.

S: Funky Belgian yeast, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg in the nose.

T: Sweet and sour like a oud bruin, with some funky Belgian yeast, fruity Belgian yeast esters, lemon, cardamom and nutmeg.

M: Medium bodied, typical saison carbonation.

O: Pretty good. Not one of their best Belgian-style ales, but definitely worth a try if you can find it (I'm assuming tap-only).

On tap at O'Brien's Pub in San Diego, CA.

Pours a clear yellow-orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, spices, and yeast. Taste is much the same with a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

On tap at the brewpub. So-so saison, certainly displaying white pepper, coriander, and yeast which is an obstacle. Not a lot of inviting spices, however. Quaffable. Blonde coloured body. Merely hint of lemon. Appropriately carbonated. Would like some more bold taste.

Imbibed on tap at Russian River Brewing on 9/30/12. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a hazy orange with thin, irregular white head. Lots of spices: clove, pepper, but very light with some coriander and banana. Lots of lemon in the nose. Malt is perceptible, but not enough to describe other than light. Pungent, slightly barnyard yeast with a swirl. Taste starts with with honey-like sweetness and turns pungent quickly. Orange and some grapefruit citrus come next followed by a soft bitterness and nectar with hay. Feel is slightly viscous, finish dry.

It becomes a little too thick over time, but I like the spiciness. Very complex, and overall light Saison. I wish I could manipulate yeast the way RRBC does.

12oz teardrop Belgian glass
Enjoyed at the brew pub in Santa Rosa, CA on 9/5/12

A: This one came out a hazy yellow/gold color. There was some nice carbonation as well. Some sticky bright white lacing that left lots on glass.

S: On the nose, I got the typical spicy and yeasty aromas. Definitely some pepper.

T: This is a nice little Saison. The taste follows the smells that I was pulling. You get that spicy pepper on the front of the tongue. Then some of that farmhouse like yeast flavor in the mid mouth with a nice dry finish. Very crisp and refreshing with an ABV that is hidden well.

M: It's medium bodied, good Saison.

On tap at the source.

A: Pours a slightly hazy egg yolk yellow with a 1" which head which fades to the rim leaving stringers and spots of lace.

N: Peppery spice, bready yeast, hay/grass. Slightly musty grape skins, floral esters and herbs.

T: Yeasty and spicy (pepper, cloves), lemon citrus. Fairly straight forward Saison.

M: Semi-moderate body with medium carbonation. Dry and semi-bitter with a mildly prickly finish.

O: Basically good, refreshing, and easy to drink.

This is Russian River’s saison, and a tasty one at that.

It pours a hazy golden-straw color with a foamy white cap. Very peppery, very zesty aroma, with a light floral note rounding it out. The flavor comes across as being zesty, sharp, light and grassy, with a hint of white pepper and a pleasing floral, estery finish. As it warms it opens further, with its floral character becoming more and more pronounced. An expertly done saison. Fresh and refreshing. Yum.

Served in a footed glass at the brewery.

A: No head. Hazy gold.

S: Fruity and softly pleasant. Very saison-like.

T: Good but not great. Not strange enough for me. Dry yeast, gentle floral-fruit with a slightly spicy kick. Good yeast, decent beer.

M: Carbonated, spicy, and good enough.

O: Recommended for people who like saisons. I probably won't have another.

Killer Combination at Monk's Dinner 7 June 2011
black walnut stuffed brioche with delice de bourgogne cheese

murky brown with a thick off white head that leaves a nasty white film as it dissipates; it did hold well though without too much assistance from multiple swirls to replenish it.

smells like brett-town: sweet caramel, a yeasty bread, sod.

yum. corriander, warm apples, floral hops, pepper, bread yeast. had a bit of the alcohol at the end, which gave way to a bit of perspective on the other flavors. the brioche was very similar to the bread flavors in the beer, so with the cheese and walnut, it is a really funky, sweet, sour, and creamy combination.

nice, thicker body than expected. it was creamy, too. paired with this dessert it was nearly a milkshake.
cheers

Pours a hazy golden brown with a half-finger of white head. Smell is a noticeable mustiness and some nice citrus and spice notes. Taste is similar to smell, with a pretty predominant yeast funkiness, a bit of a mineral taste, along with some grapefruit and faint lemon. Finishes very earthy. Medium mouthfeel, which is pretty crisp and has a nice lingering earthiness. Overall, I really enjoyed this and would have it again. Almost a bit heavy for a saison, but still refreshing, delicious and interesting.

Draft at Monk's Cafe.

Pours a dark golden orange with paler yellowish orange hues.  Slightly hazy with a 1.5 finger white head that slowly fades into lasting cap.  Streaks and spots of soapy lace left behind.

Slightly earthy, funky aroma with subtle barnyard notes, especially hay, grass and straw.  Theres a nice funky brett presence that's countered by subtle crisp hops and light fruit notes.

Medium bodied and fuller than expected with a nice dry, funky brett presence along with some zesty spice, bready yeast and light fruit.  Lots of peppery spice, coriander perhaps, complimenting the funky brett.  There's also a nice bread/yeast flavor that adds complexity and fullness tithe palate.  The funky, earthy character is countered perfectly by the sweeter notes.  Hints of apple, pear and subtle alcohol.  This beer is very complex and extremely quaffable.  One of the better saisons I've ever had.  I went back for several glasses until the keg was gone.  Highly recommended!

A saison from Russian River. Thanks to everyone that didn't kick the RR taps at Monks. Advertised as bretty.

A: The saison is golden, crystal clear. The bright hue looks nice in the glass. A white head comes with the pour, over one finger, and laces as I get through it.

S: The nose is a little funky, not as sharp as Symposium but definitely musty. Spice is prevalent with pepper and fleshy fruits along for the ride.

T: The funk isn't overwhelming. Rather it complements the spiciness of the saison. Fleshy pears and apples are evident, sweet but not cloying. Lemony citric flavors remind me of the brett, not a heavy funk but instead a role player. The citric flavors provide a counterpoint to the saison, lifting it up. The complexity of the light funk along with pepper and spices is very enjoyable. It's good.

M: The mouthfeel is spicy sweet, fruits and pepper, along with just enough citric lemon. I'm a sucker for saisons and this one hit the spot (I had two glasses).

On tap at monks.

A- a nice two fingers of bright white semi dense head with great retention and some solid lace atop a slightly hazy golden yellow brew.

S- huge musty yeast and green grass with a dusty dry biscuit hit. You can almost smell the pasture. Hints of a funk way in the back and a touch of lemon.

T- wow! Bold yeast, musty and dry, giving off light fruity hits with some lemon peel and lots of fresh green grassy hops. The pale malts play perfectly with the yeast and are bone dry with crumbling biscuit like. Hints of sweetness. The earthy musty finish is clean and super dry.

M- on the light side of body and a touch higher in carb giving a very refreshing quaff. Very dry finish.

O- this is a stellar saison and one of the better I've ever had. Holds its own against the best from across the pond. It hits just right at all the right spots and I wish I could drink it all summer long.

Pours a bright yellow gold, some noticeable particles dance around, puffy cap of white head, good retention and decent lacing. Scent brings a light bit of farmhouse funk, followed by a heft whiff of tropical fruit, hay and grass on the back end. The scent leads directly to the taste, the tropical fruits are in abundance from a solid hop profile, earthy funkyness is there but doesnt overpower, the malts are fresh. Medium bodied, adequately carbonated, lightly drying. A nice, boldy hopped farmouhouse ale.

On Tap at Monk's Cafe for beer week, what a place.

A- Euridition pops off with a very shiny gold appearance with a nice white head up above, very foamy with good retention in the tulip. Very clear looking beer.

S- Very bretty in the nose that much is apparent. So much brett. Under that lemongrass squirts, some bread and other citrus after some swirls. Pungent and alive. Some hops have survived and noted

T- A party in my mouth and the brett is invited. Yeast, brett, lemon. An earthy hop bite in the middle with some flowers and pepper spice. The brett never leaves, it's really packed in there.

M- This beer is alive, I don't know how old it is, but it seems fresh, very alive on the tounge, brett burps afterwards. Body is at about medium with a slight sting from the very adaquate carb here.

O- Oh, Hell ya!!

At the source. Poured a hazy classic yellow, minor dense white head, minor lacing.

Very nice aroma with lots of hop participation along with tame funk.

Taste is traditional bretty saison with two exceptions, major hop flavor contribution and lack of any dry bite at the finish. Damnation profile with a saison twist finishes with a Redemption hop signature. Thin smooth mouthfeel.
a unique saison

Enjoyed this one on tap at Toronado's 'Tion Night. Three year old keg of brett-spiked saison? Yes please. Hazy gold appearance with a finger of white suds. The nose is very brett-forward at this point, funk-filled and lightly tart with some underpinnings of citrus fruit. Flavor followed suit, but bolder in tartness. Lemony with soft grain flavors beneath. Acidity is very mild, and the texture is extremely light and soft, almost pilsner-esque. Drinkability is through the roof, this is one you could session all night.

From my notes on recent trip, poured into a sampling glass, arrived a golden color with no head. Aroma isn't all that great either, grains and some unkind fruit. Taste is better, and though I tried to like it, this just isn't my favorite saison, and I like saisons. Yhar.

light golden and brightly glowing appearance. ring left around the top, nothing too exciting about how this looks. nose strikes the senses with a barnyard funk, mild.. big lemon notes. taste fits a wild ale profile somewhere between fantome and flemish primitive with an elevated bitterness and strange finish combining a champagne-like dryness with nutty wood flavors and unsugared grapefruit scratchiness. good effort but my least favorite russian river beer to date. the metallic tinge in the end and a general moldy hop character in the finish are unwanted members of the funk parade. with RR, my expectations are high and average just ain't gonna cut it.

Slightly hazy pale gold with one finger of poorly retained white head in a 14 oz goblet. The pour was a bit too cold, IMO. Wish RR would serve the Belgians in larger glasses to allow for a more appropriate, Belgian-esque pour...

The aroma, somewhat subdued by the lower temp (grrr...) is slightly sour, with tart lemon and green apples, a hint of spice, grass, and the faintest funk.

Not too adveturous for a saison, but solid overall. Dryish but with a small amount of apparent residual sugars making for a very mild, very subdued maltiness that is very pleasant. Light and crisp above this petite malt foundation, this simple and straightforward saison is *highly* drinkable. Above all else, drinkability would have to be its strongest aspect, and it can't really be quantified based on everything else I have observed about this beer. I shall have to conduct more research...

Frosted neon orange opaqueness in the glass. Exciting unfiltered saison looks. Looks almost exactly like metameusel. Still in the glass with minimal haze or head. Smells kinda nasty, like cat piss and lemon, edged with some stank rotting fruit.

Tastes like a glass of cat piss pumped up with lemon extract -- Like a weird cheese that you like even though you don't. Salty edges. Not sweet -- mealy, like banana chips. Notes of prunes, sharp citrus, soap. Overripe fruit and mouth-puckering cranberry tartness. Supersharp carbonation.

A beer I can respect, but really not my cup of tea, or brew -- or cat piss for that matter.

This arrived as a dark yellow with a fairly thin head. Lace is minimal.

The smell is pretty decent, but seem to be either dominated by one herb or simply lacking any others. The taste is similar, in that it's somewhat lacking in variety and the interesting flavors brought forth by other saisons. Mouthfeel suffers along these lines as well. The simplicity doesn't suit the style. The drinkability is still good.

Murky light orangey gold, hazy with a nice thick cap of white foam that holds well, and laces nice. Aromas are standard saidon fare, but kicked up a notch. Fresh leafy herbal hops, some slight hints of funk and fruits, some nice earthy malts and fresh french bread as well. Taste follows suit. This beer tastes very fresh, leafy, hoppy, and malty with some nice earthy tones as noted above. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and drinkability is nice. This is a really solid saison that I can find no fault in. A true summer sipper, and another real winner from Vinnie!

From a growler. Pours a hazy golden amber with a small white head that has good retention and leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is earthy with a light mineral note, a hint of apple, and a peppery note. The Taste is dry and earthy with a bit of pepper. The finish is dry and earthy with some light apricot. Medium body. Medium carbonation. A pretty solid American Saison.
