From a growler. Pours a hazy golden amber with a small white head that has good retention and leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is earthy with a light mineral note, a hint of apple, and a peppery note. The Taste is dry and earthy with a bit of pepper. The finish is dry and earthy with some light apricot. Medium body. Medium carbonation. A pretty solid American Saison.

A big thanks to orangesol for sharing this growler back in March.

A - Poured a clear, golden yellow body with a lot of carbonation...the head stood one finger tall and was white in color...it showed nice retention which left nice lacing

S - The funk lingers around but other aromas can be detected...pale malts, lemon zest, and some sweet caramel

T - Again, the funk plays a big part on the palate...it's very earthy and dirty...the pale, bready malts come through adding a touch of graininess to the beer...there's a nice citrus addition (lemon zest mostly) but I would have liked to have more so it could have cut through the earthiness

M - Light bodied...nicely carbonated, crisp, lemony

O - I'm very thankful for Nate sharing this with us...I would not pass up the opportunity to have anything from Russian River...a well made Saison with a lot of funky earthiness and could have used just a bit more citrus

Massive thanks goes out to Estocker who has been instrumental in helping complete my Russian River -tion Quest! Shared with my doppelganger while sitting around the pool on my birthday! Served from growler into a Stone nonic multiple times. Poured golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, and spices. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, spices, and fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a great Saison. Probably one of the best I have had to-date. Very easy drinking and nicely balanced. Never would have guessed the alcohol was 7%+ as this one seemed quite sessionable to me based on flavor alone. I could see myself killing a growler of this no problem at all. A definite must try without a doubt!

572nd Review on BA
Growler to Tulip

Thanks to BA daysinthewake for the hookup

App- The color of pure gold with a well capped two finger head. Nice fingers of cling but not the most impressive saison I've seen.

Smell- Its not what I was hoping for. Its a saison but more malty? Its lacking a lightness to it. More heavy on the nose.

Taste- Taste follows the nose a bit but the malts thin out a little and get a little bread and butter.

Mouth- Medium bodied and medium carbed. A little bit of an aspirin flavor remains to me. Wasnt bad just there.

Drink- Vinny always pushes a style and this was a thicker Saison to say the least. Was tasty, pretty good. Probably wont come back to it though.

I first tried this at DLD 2011 thanks to nerd's generosity (thanks Mike!), and now I've got an entire growler thanks to Craig (westcoastbeerlvr). Lots of good people from the Bay area.

This pours a golden color, brilliantly clear, with a few fingers of foam and just a little lace. It smells a bit yeasty with a whiff of spice, maybe some Saaz hops too (grassy and whatnot).

This tastes just as it should, although each time I tried it I entered with the hope that this would have some brett. Still extremely tasty even in the absence of any sour notes though. More like a wit-saison, light spice and Belgian yeast along with clean malty flavors.

Well carbonated, and it goes down extremely easily (I'm writing this review after finishing 1/2 the growler over the course of an hour or so). Another style nailed by RR, although I do think they should put a little brett in a saison batch for a more definitive RR saison.

Growler via nickd717. Thanks again buddy. Shared with quite a few local BA's.

A - Pours straw yellow with a dense two finger tall head leaving small streaks of lacing down the glass.

S - Smells like damp earth. Plenty of barnyard funk from the brett mixed with some light spice, most notably clove. I was expecting a bit more citrus in this one.

T - Lots of brett funk up front slowly giving way to a mix of bready yeast and light spice, mostly clove and a dash of pepper. Finish is chewy with a bit of lingering funk. I liked this one but it really needed that citric note to round it out. I hope to have this again one day.

M - Light body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Nice, soft, feel on the pallet. This was extremely easy to drink, I went back for more quite a few times.

O - I really enjoyed this one quite a bit. The flavors were simple, all be it a little dull, but it was very easy to drink. Thanks for the chance nick.

Thanks to orangesol for sharing a growler of this one. Sent eastward by the caring hands of NickD.

A-Hazy golden yellow with a thick bright white head that slowly reduced to a thin cap and left spotty lace.

S-Earthy, spicy, musty. Bit of white pepper spice, clove, hay, lemon zest and fresh tilled dirt.

T-On par with the aroma with a plethora of spice, earth, must and herbal notes. No one flavour dominates and all mingle and meld rather seemlessly.

M-Medium-light bodied, quite soft and creamy with an easy drinking profile.

D-Nothing crazy going on here but the sum of the parts equals one mighty easy drinking brew. Would like a bit more citrus zest and a little less Earthiness but these are minor and personal "flaws". A solid example of style for sure.

Growler purchased from the brewery poured into my Portsmouth snifter.

A: Pours a light golden color with a frothy bright white head that faded into a thin collar that left a few steaks of wispy lacing down the glass.
S: Earthy and fruity notes of green apple skins, golden pears, peppery spice and Belgian yeast, cloves, and white wine.
T: Follows the nose with light, crisp flavors of golden fruits, tingly spices and lightly bitter hops. Finish is full of cloves and citrus hops. The aftertaste is lightly bitter and a tad dry. Very refreshing and enjoyable.
M: Medium body, soft, airy carbonation made of fine bubbles, and a slick and bubbly mouthfeel. Crisp, refreshing and easy to drink.
O: Overall a really solid saison that I can't really find anything wrong with. I am really enjoying having this growler to myself. Wonderful beer.

Big thanks to MVM for the share

A - It pours a radiant golden hue and is capped with a linen-white head; some lace ensues. Looks great for a growler that traveled halfway across the country.

S - The nose is clean and mineral-y pale-pils malt for the most part, with a bit of spice in the form of white pepper, clove, and fresh-cut grass, as well as musty old hay. I am also getting slight lemongrass and verbena nuances.

T - The taste really follows the nose, except where it was aromatically edgy, it is gustatorily smooth. The brew is easy-drinking. Light spice, clean and pristine malt character, and grassy lemon-y hop make for a delicious libation, if somewhat plebian. Saison isn't supposed to be some high-class shit anyhow.

M - The feel is expansively creamy, softly carbonated, and a measure less than medium-bodied.

O - This is a really good straight-up farmhouse brew. It puts a premium on easy refreshment, and offers light flavors to that end. I like.

Thanks to nerd for bringing this among about a billion other things. Served in a SAVOR snifter.

Pours a nice clean golden color with a good white head with nice retention. Sticks around for a bit before falling down. The nose carries a nice bit of light grain plus a good amount of funk, though in a restrained way. Some floral hops and light citrus character as well. The taste combines the fruity elements of the beer with the slightly-spicy saison yeast quite well. Impressive, to say the least. Really nice carbonation and a crisp finish, just as a saison should be. As is always expected from Russian River, a very well made beer.

From 04/30/11 notes. Got to try this from a growler at Dark Lord Day thanks to a generous BA.

a - Pours a murky yellow-golden color with an inch of white head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of brett, floral hops, citrus hops, and light spices. A little funky because of the brett, very enjoyable.

t - Tastes of brett, floral hops, spices, yeast, citrus hops.

m - Light body and moderate carbonation, smooth and crisp. Very easy to drink.

o - Overall a very nice saison with brett. Nose was a little funky and it was very easy to drink. Would love to have again.

Thanks to nerd for getting this growler filled right before he left to attend DLD. Only two days old, so very fresh. Poured into Jackie O's mini-snifter.

A - Pours a hazy golden yellow, frothy carbonation, slight spotty lacing, some whisps on top.

S - Huge brett notes, funk, normal Saison-esk notes, floral character, sweet fruity notes like pears or light apple.

T - Funk, brett, floral notes, slight sweet fruit, pears. The brett and funk dominate this one, but still, there are other things going on here. A nice complex brett-added beer with a banana finish.

M - Light, smooth and crisp, good carbonation, creamy finish.

O - A very solid Saison that beats most of the competition. Very enjoyable for a sunny day in the 70's and a nice start to out tasting at DLD. Went back to this a few times. Recommend.

Growler filled 4/30/2011 split three ways. Reviewed 5/1/2011.

Ar: Grassy, herbal, floral and fruity, in comparison to the taste the aroma is somewhat restrained, hints at tartness, earthy, light lemony character, peach/nectarine character increases in intensity with warmth, earthy

Ap: Medium/thick white head, good retention, hazy pale straw

T: Peach/apricot, grassy, herbal/spicy hop nice floral character, crisp finish, grassy/lemongrass end, mild pleasant earthyness, definitely a unique and pleasant beer, has a pleasant unrefined sort of character (not to say the beer is unrefined, but it seems closer to the rustic tradition of saisons than many other US made examples come), tangerine/sweet citrus, light tropical fruit, slight acidity. This beer has a great well balanced/somewhat restrained estery profile, definitely not an over the top belgian yeast profile but has great complexities. The grassy/earthyness provides a good counterpoint to the floral/fruity esters.

M: Medium/light body, medium carbonation, slight lingering grassy/green wood character that is mild enough to be pleasant/neutral.

O: The chalkboard at Russian River didn't mention anything about brett but i know previous releases specified that this beer had brett. It definitely tastes like it does have brett but it is mild and grassy oriented brett. Perhaps i would prefer a more funky strain of brett and a little less grassyness but the grassy character that is present definitely adds to the beer. Overall a very pleasant and unique saison.

I had a glass at the brewery and filled a growler. 7.15% ABV, 32 BU.

Aroma- classic saison aroma, spicy, earthy and floral hops, grassy, grainy. maybe some grassy brett aroma, but not sure if this batch has brett. if so, the brett is mostly grassy. some fruity hints.

App- hazy, some yeast sediment in the growler. white foam laces and keeps a nice layer on the beer. pale straw in color.

Taste- hoppy (styrian goldings?): earthy, spicy, grassy and herbal. spicy, herbal, slightly acidic and complex yeast flavor dominates. simple grainy malt with dry finish. crisp and drinkable, but with some funk either from the saison yeast or some brett. slightly acidic/crisp finish but not strong, just adds a refreshing note. decent amount of bitterness and hop flavor, but not too aggressive. some tropical fruit but not as much as Sanctification.

Mouthfeel- fine med-high carb. dry and lingering finish with some hop resin.

Overall- well done American saison. complex and authentic character. could have brett, but it is balanced. goes very well with Russian River pizza. very drinkable.

In B4 davejanssen and hobojon

Pours from the growler with a decent white head and with a golden hazy hayness. An attractive saison.

Aroma is wonderful. Tart and citrusy, damp grass/ hay fields, slightly spicy.

Tastes wonderful as well. Lemony citrus without being really sour. Light spicy phenols, delightfully grassy.

The mouthfeel really does it for me too. Somewhat hard to describe what it is, but it's very complimentary. High but fine carbonation, gives way to a very quenching drying finish.

Love this beer. Very refreshing and easy drinking, yet complex and thought-provoking. One of the better American saisons I've had.

04/30/06- Purchased at the Russian River Brewery.

Presentation- 2 liter growler fill. Poured into my Troubadour tulip glass.

Appearance- Exact golden colored pour. Full and frothy inch plus crystal white head. Mellows down to a 1/4 inch or so. Pock marked and leaves decent lacing.

Smell- A bit of the barnyard funk. Not as much as other examples, but it is there. Almost some vinous notes...maybe like a sauvignon blanc. Some tart fruit notes such as grapefruit and lemon rind.

Taste- Very crisp in flavor. Fruit flavor explodes out. Maybe a bit of a light grainy pils like taste. Mildly hoppy with lots of lemon rind and some white pepper thrown in for good measure.

Mouthfeel- Perfect carbonation level...not over the top like some other brands. Nice fruit basket aftertaste.

Drinkability- Spring is in full gear as it's about 75-80 degrees this past weekend. Damn I wish they had the pool open for use. Me and my growler would be poolside. Yet another great beer from Vinnie....this is getting to be redundant.

Much thanks to brewandbbq for this sampling.
Appears a light yellow gold with a small white head and small spotty lacing.
The smell is of wild yeast, phenols, citrus, wine like esters, tart green apples, and sour grapes.
Taste is of the light citrus and tartness that seem to dominate this brew.
The mouthfeel is of slight sourness, followed by a clean crispness, and a light airiness with some medium carbonation.
Overall, the drinkability is good. Probably not the greatest example of a true "saison" but Russian River always seems to put their own unique spin on a beer to make it delicious.

Finger licking good.

Poured gold with orange accents and a merange white head.
Previous pours and on tap at RR were murky and opaque, this serving from the growler was clear with a haze.
Almost pungent in the nose, laced with brett and a wince of tart.
Lemon juice drizzled wet hay and musty dried bannana.
Reminicent of the subdued Orval wild yeast.
Complex and intriguing.
Thin to medium in the body with a mild crispness.
On tap it was more creamy and yeasty.
Light malt and tart (wheat?) character intro to the funky farmhouse.
Bright and lingering on the pallet, with a layered personality.
Old, dusty, fruit and a nice yeast bite. Dried lemon zest and a hint of pepper.
Finishes a bit drying and tart, and quenching.
After the growler has sat for almost 2 weeks, the yeast has really dropped quite a bit, as well as some of the character.
I'll edit when I get to the end of the growler and swirl up the good stuff.

Pours a clear yellow-orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, spices, and yeast. Taste is much the same with a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Imbibed on tap at Russian River Brewing on 9/30/12. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a hazy orange with thin, irregular white head. Lots of spices: clove, pepper, but very light with some coriander and banana. Lots of lemon in the nose. Malt is perceptible, but not enough to describe other than light. Pungent, slightly barnyard yeast with a swirl. Taste starts with with honey-like sweetness and turns pungent quickly. Orange and some grapefruit citrus come next followed by a soft bitterness and nectar with hay. Feel is slightly viscous, finish dry.

It becomes a little too thick over time, but I like the spiciness. Very complex, and overall light Saison. I wish I could manipulate yeast the way RRBC does.

Enjoyed at the brew pub in Santa Rosa, CA on 9/5/12

A: This one came out a hazy yellow/gold color. There was some nice carbonation as well. Some sticky bright white lacing that left lots on glass.

S: On the nose, I got the typical spicy and yeasty aromas. Definitely some pepper.

T: This is a nice little Saison. The taste follows the smells that I was pulling. You get that spicy pepper on the front of the tongue. Then some of that farmhouse like yeast flavor in the mid mouth with a nice dry finish. Very crisp and refreshing with an ABV that is hidden well.

M: It's medium bodied, good Saison.

This is Russian River’s saison, and a tasty one at that.

It pours a hazy golden-straw color with a foamy white cap. Very peppery, very zesty aroma, with a light floral note rounding it out. The flavor comes across as being zesty, sharp, light and grassy, with a hint of white pepper and a pleasing floral, estery finish. As it warms it opens further, with its floral character becoming more and more pronounced. An expertly done saison. Fresh and refreshing. Yum.
