Bottle Pours a clear brown with a good off white fizzy head. The head leaves quickly. Reminds me of soda pop. Aroma is of dark fruit. Apples, cherries, and a touch of the oak. Has a good carbonation. The flavor is real good. A lot of sweetness but kicked up by a sour ending. Has a dry texture. This is a differnt style than I would normally drink but it is excellent. Has a great finish and the aftertaste stays with you for days. This is quite a tasty beer. Cost a little more than I spend but was worth it. (509 characters)

750ml corked and caged bottle, $21.99 from Vendome in North Hollywood. Batch#002X1.

I have been looking for this beer for a while and it has been on the top of my list of beers wanted. I found it finally, secret stash at Vendome, not even on the shelves. Very sought after, hard to find beer.

Removing the cork comes a loud pop and the bubbles gradual pour over the bottle.

A: Poured into a tulip glass, pours a warm opaque cherry red/brown with a two finger head that rapidly dissipates. Minimal lacing.

S: Cherries, vinegar, red wine, oak

T: Oak, sour vinegar, cherries, ripe red fruit and vanilla- true to the style of the beer, but very well rounded and better than any of the oak barrel aged sours I've ever had.

M: Fills the whole tongue and the entire mouth and holds there. Pleasant sour lingers for a long, long time. What a great texture; very layered, very complex.

D: Easy to drink, slight alcohol burn (in a good way), pleasant pucker.

This is far and beyond my favorite beer to date. Too bad it's so hard to find. Would love to get my hands on a case of this and age it. This one is made to be shared. Just awesome. This is the reason I drink beer. (1,171 characters)

Had my sister bring me a couple bottles back for me from colorado. Definately worth it.

Poured a 22oz bottle from batch 001x2 into an oversized wine glass. much darker than i had expected, deep mahoney to purple i would say, providing little head that dissappeared quickly leaving minimal lace.

the smell is pleasantly sour, with fruity notes (raisins, currants, grapes) some spiceyness to, a bit dry...maybe even a little candied sugar.

this is a wildly delicious ale. a nice fruity tartness, dry from the cab sav. very pleasant as the fruitness lingers on the tongue. incredibly drinkable for a wild ale and 10%er. Not harshness.

definately need an open mind for this beer(most non BAs need not apply), but you will definately reep the benefits of a unique and delicious beer. not much to improve on only wish i had more... (829 characters)

Alas, a top ranked beer that doesn't disappoint.

I guess I expected a lighter colored beer to pour from the bottle, but the Flanders Red-looking beer runs from ruby red to cola brown and morphs into a classic Oud Bruin appearance. Much better head retention than most other Wild Ales which shows a lot of maltiness and protien character that keeps the beer inviting. Moderate retention and lacing accompanies the beer into its proper warmth.

Mouthwatering aromas of red wines, apples, tart berries, plumbs, grapes and... oh yea, cherries. (think skins of these fruits as much as the actual fruits themselves). Throw in a vineous, vinegar touch that keeps the beer sharp and clean. And, is this beer dry-hopped?- even in the nose, it takes on an Orval-like resemblence.

Flavors are a very directe carry-over from the nose with heavy emphasis on a clean, tart fruitiness with a strong malt foundation. Even a light detection of chocolate malts helps to envelop the aged fruit flavors and make a buffer between the pith and the acidity. Even with the clean lactic taste, these bugs do not disolve the beer into vinegar, but their restrained attenuation gives the beer a lot of malt flavor.

Likewise, the beer carries the maltiness into the mouthfeel. Again, the clean attenuation keeps the beer acidic, thin, and light while allowing a creamy maltiness to protect the beer from complete astringency. The beer carries the grape, cherry, and plumb taste and feel deep into the finish and with a clean apple aftertaste.

This beer may be the finest example of working with wild yeast and bacteria. Outstanding. (1,608 characters)

Also had this at Local 44 in West Philly during Philly Beer Week (3/15/09). Review from notes.

A - clear garnet brown with an off white head in a tulip. The head quickly receded to leave a thin white cap. Some spots of lace (but I attribute the lack of head to be the way they rinse the glasses).

S - earthy, sour, mild Belgian candi sweetness. Throw in some tart cherries and biscuity yeastiness and you've got yourself a lovely nose for this beer.

T - very acidic, sour, and vinegary green apples. Citrus (maybe of lime?) and some funky barnyard going on here. This is so good!

M - medium bodied and well carbonated. Quite smooth and gives a dry finish.

D - holy crap... this was my 2nd beer of the day this morning (the first was Pliny the Younger) and I can still drink more! (784 characters)

Review #250 - Big thanks to Dave (d0b) for sharing one of these on New Beer Sunday. Batch 001X3 served in a Hopleaf tulip glass.

A - One finger of fairly quick-dissolving tan foam, that doesn't leave a ton of lacing, but settles into a nice ring that lingers throughout the drinking experience. Medium brown color, with firey red highlights at the edges of the glass and lots of tiny bubbles racing upwards. I know that it's possible to do better, even within the constraints of the style and ABV - see my description of Toronado 20th .

S - Lots of bretty funk, tart and sour currants, tobacco, sweet caramel malts, and wood. The mix of Belgian dark and wild ale is reminiscent of the T20th, but this is quite as nice, particularly the wood smell initially gave off a slightly plastic kind of smell before the brew warmed up.

T - The taste is a bit of a revelation, with lovely tartness, no discernible alcohol, a lovely red wine/Cabernet acidity, oak barrel, currants, and sweet caramel malts. There's significantly more sour and less funk here, and the flavors come together in a much more satisfying way. Since so much of this review is going to be ultimately very T20th influenced I'll mention that the oakiness and lacto-sour elements are much milder here, although I'm wondering if that is because of the age or the recipe itself...

M - Sticky, but with a dry finish, moderate carbonation, minimal alcohol heat, and medium body. Some cotton mouth but not where near as extreme as the Lou Pepe Framboise we had. Right on for the style.

D - Shockingly drinkable for a 10% wild ale. Great aftertaste and negligible carbonation burn or bloat. Other than the (slight) problem of getting stupidly drunk from a 750ml bottle this is terrific stuff.

A couple thoughts...
This is a superb substitute for Toronado 20th. While clearly a different beer it does a lot of the same things very well - blending two classic Belgian styles (quad/dark ale with gueuze/lambic), hiding a ridiculously 10%, and marrying a whole host of wonderful and seemingly incongruous flavors. The only place is comes up short is in the appearance, and that doesn't really influence my drinking enjoyment all that much. And when one factors in the huge price differential...

Batch variation seems to be pretty obvious. I didn't get that vague plastic smell from the batch 001x4 bottles I've sampled. I'll comment further when I open up my own bottle at some point. I'm also looking forward to batch 002. (2,480 characters)

This is one of the best beers I've had. Pours a dark reddish brown with some cloudiness. My gentle pour left a substantial head that fell away to a tan lacing in my Westy chalice.

Rich boozy alcohol with some great sour brett yeasties. Slight vinegar and a good amount of oak in the aroma.

Huge mouthwatering explosion of flavor here. This brew is holding nothing back. Wave of sweet vinous and dark fruit hit first, then the wave of sour goodness. Great barnyard phenolic funk, all sorts of great yeast esters. Wonderfully tart and crisp, like biting into a granny smith apple. Finish arrives with some rich oakiness and the alcohol lingers with its warmth. This is an A+ beer in every respect. It reminds me of a sour quad. The alcohol isn't overkill, it really adds to the experience at its current level. The level and balance of sour to sweet to spice is so perfect that I want to drink this...not just sip it. It's incredibly drinkable and the aftertaste keeps pulling me back in. Mouthfeel is completely full and satisfying.

Received this brew from 110x0110 (not right) in a recent trade. I've been hella excited to try this brew for quite some time and considering I just got a new job, today is the day. Drank from my Ithaca Excelsior tulip.

Batch 001X4

A- Pours a dark reddish brown that is sort of mahogany in color with a fairly prominent one finger foamy head. It dissipates really quickly and doesn't leave a cap or collar but I'm biased. Half point higher because I'm so pumped.
S- Slightly woody and tart with a semi vinous red grape dimension. Earthy and clean at the same time with some apple cider vinegar and raisin bran. Light cherry with a sort of minor musky funk and Brett backdrop. The 10% is no where to be found in the nose.
T- Starts with a lightly tart/sour kick that is amazingly smooth and pleasant. Mushroom and ham (yes ham) add a very earthy funk component that is sort of salty and sweet. Tobacco, leather, teriyaki beef jerky and compost add even more earthy goodness before the Cabernet sets in. Red grapes, prunes and figs are somewhat fruity and raw. The beer hasn't reached totally puckering sour yet but it will eventually. As of now it's just slightly sour and awesome. Finishes with some vanilla and oak and lots of thick black fruity goodness.
M- Medium to light body with a sharp carbonation and pleasant feel. Again, 10% my ass...
D- Wow... This brew is amazing. So earthy and drinkable with a fantastic fruity quality that isn't sweet or bitter. Unlike anything I've tasted to this point. I was expecting a straight up sour with a slight fruity dimension but not so. Awesome stuff, thanks Matt! (1,611 characters)

Pours a very dark brown that shows some red when held to light. Head is on the low side of medium and dies pretty quickly.

Aromas are tart and woody with sour cherries, big dry Cabernet, and some light funk.

More cherries and other fruit on the palate, some vinegar-esque pedio acidity, red wine dryness, and high amounts of lacto sour. As it warms I'm getting some powdery unsweetened chocolate, bittersweet blackberry, and more woody tannins.

The amazing complexity of this one makes it tough to pick up on the 10% ABV and keeps this very drinkable. The medium natural carbonation is well complimented by the long draw of dry/sour to keep the mouthfeel interesting.

Overall my favorite wild ale to date. Truly world class. Vinnie & co have hit another one out the park. Don't miss this one. (797 characters)

Large corked bottle, poured into a tulip.

Dark brown, burgundy highlights, minimal haziness, tan head that is quite fluffy and good looking but shows minimal retention, some lacing. This might be its only "flaw".
Aroma is quite tart, acidic and even vinegary, fruity, with the expected currants but a lot of other dark fruits. Oak makes a cameo appearance, as well as grapes and tobacco.
Rich yet fully carbonated, which makes it quite drinkable. ABV 10 only shows on the bottle; in the glass it is nowhere to be found.
The rich flavor shows multiple notes, including oak, acidity and a nice tartness; multiple fruits, mostly currants and raisins. The tartness and sourness hits you with a nice puckering bite, not excessive but just right.
Vinegar, tobacco, cherries, grapes and even vanilla eventually show up.
This is an incredibly tasty, complex and rich beer that is well deserving of the hype. The best RR I ever had, and I am glad I have more.

pours a great crystal clear brown that shows nice garnet and ruby hues when held to the light. a small ring of tan bubbles surrounds the glass, never quite gathering enough strength to cover the surface. a few spots of lace.

aroma is good. malt vinegar. bit of lemon. puckering sourness, that's before even taking a sip. old leather. bit of horse blanket. white bread. cracker. bit of grain. dark fruit - plum, date, currant. bit of lighter fruit too. orange peel. bit of alcohol.

taste is good. puckering sourness, but more lemon+fruit than vinegar. sour cherry. currant. bit of malt vinegar. cracker and white bead. bit of grain. low bitterness level. medium sourness. fairly low acidity. orange peel. grapefruit.

mouthfeel is good. fairly light body. nice dry finish. just over medium carbonation level.

drinkability is pretty good. the alcohol is very well hidden. vinegar and acidity is pretty well balanced. nice fruity depth. not my favourite RR sour, but damn tasty. (1,100 characters)

This is my 1800th review, holy shit.

Poured into a chalice a nice ruby color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger fizzy off-white head, very minimal sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty/yeasty, oak, cherries, currants. The taste is malty/yeasty, soury, slight oak, funky, cherries/currants. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a tasty brew, for some reason, I'm not really into the AWA as much as I use to be. (451 characters)

A: deep ruby red, smooth head.

S: Sweet-tart candy, more on the tart side. Cherries.

T: Sour cherry candy. That is the foremost thing that popped out to me. Some citrusy, woodyness appears at the back.

M: Vinegary aftertaste, but not really objectionable. Lip piucker sourness.

D: Wierd, but the sourness makes you want to go back for more. Certianally interesting, and, even refreshing. Need have a cold water after this, but, nice, in a wierd way. (453 characters)

Got this bottle a while back. Saving it for a nice day, and what a better day than my last finals? I tried it the first time at the brewery during the release.

A - This beer looks amazing. A nice cherry dark red with a smooth half inch creamy head.

S - The smell is sour upfront, followed by a nice sweetness.

T - Sour Sour Sour. This beer starts off very sour and slows into a bitter cherry flavor. The sweetness finishes off this nice beer.

M - This beer is perfectly carbonated. The head hits your lips smoothly, and the dry finish leaves you wanting more.

D - This beer is one of those heavy hitters that you want to drink it all day, all night, but also want to savor it and take your time. Also, you would'nt want to session this at the price, but that does not reflect on the rating :). This beer however, can be overpowering due to the sourness, but other than that, high drinkability.

I am glad I waited for a nice day to enjoy this gem of a beer. RR hits another amazing beer. (992 characters)

750 ml bottle, big thanks to Carlos and GregMcQ for both hooking me up with one of these.

Pours a clear dark reddish orange, some amber highlights, thin off white head forms, quickly drops to a thin ring around the glass before almost disappearing, some lace spots stick to the glass. Smell is real nice, currants and funk, sour fruity, cranberries, alcohol, candi sugar, grapes and oak, vanilla, very sour and acidic in the finish, nice complex tropical fruitiness, does remind me a bit of the Toronado 20th. Taste is similar, lemony up front, very sour and funky, acidic, caramel/honey sweetness, currants and grapes, sour fruit, oak and vanilla, very dry in the finish, tons of fruit, sourness is not overdone. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation, some warmth going down. Very nice sour, don't think I enjoyed this one as much as most of the other RR sours, but still pretty damn good. Poured from a 750mL bottle into an oversized wine glass. Batch 001X2.

A- Pours a brown-cabernet sauvignon color with garnet hues throughout. A thin layer of cream colored head formed and disappeared quite quickly.

S- Very complex. Nice oak barrel presence. In addition there was a subtle vinegar scent mixed with a more dominant vinous quality that came from the cabernet barrels and currants. Beautifully done, very potent. I could take whiffs of this over and over again.

T- Just perfect. Up front you get a lot of qualities that would most likely be found in complex wines. Very vinous, with grape tannins and currants running rampant. Midway through to the finish there is an oak sourness that balances out the beer perfectly. It takes the sweetness from the initial taste and gives it a sour twist at the perfect moment.

M- This really hampered the beer. Way too much carbonation. Upon reaching the pallet it seemed as if a million carbonated bubbles formed and kept the true taste of the beer from ever reaching the senses.

D- This is one of the most drinkable sours I have ever had. If I could give it a 6 I would. The aging in cabernet barrels really did this beer a favor as it dulled down the sourness until the end. Makes it much more drinkable. I could easily drink a whole 750 mL bottle without sharing.

If you can get your hands on this, buy it. One of the better sours out there. Well balanced and gives a nice sour flavor without being overly acidic. Highly recommended. (1,494 characters)

Appearance=Poured a big 2 finger head, which quickly dissipated. Redish, black beer with a lot of carbonation.

Smell= Awesome! Oak, Cab, green apples, yeast.

Taste= Awesome! Sour, yet not overpowering. Very, very tasty!

Mouthfeel= Thin side, good carbonation and a lively mouthfeel. Almost perfect...

Drinkability= High. Extremely good. Alcohol is hidden nicely. Taste is awesome. Nose is awesome. What more could you want? (536 characters)

a: clear amber color, nice white head with good lacing, good bubbly activity
s: a lot going on here -- yeast, oak, moderate caramel sweetness, can almost smell the carbonation
t: after a few drinks, this settled to a very nice mix of yeast/malty beer-ness with bubbly sparkling wine -- in a good way. finishes very clean, but continues with good balance of malty sweetness, tart fruits and bubbly bliss
m: as mentioned, carbonation a very big part of this beer, with mixes of medium to lighter body feeling, but the ride was nice throughout. alcohol is light.
d: i tried to age this a bit, but only got about 4 months in...still a very nice balance of characteristics -- the beer portions won out enough to maintain this as a beer. over-priced, but very enjoyable (763 characters)

Poured into a wine glass and produced a ruby-brown color when held up to the light and appeared dark brown in normal lighting. Half inch head with almost no retention. Lively, visible carbonation. No lacing during the drinking period.

Aroma of funk; that wet leather aroma common to wild fermented ales. There was, however, a strong aroma of black currants and cherries interwoven with the mildew aroma.

Flavor was a very tart, vinegar sour flavor. There was a tannic flavor like a soft red wine lingering in there and a lemon-salty finish. Very interesting and complex.

Full bodied mouthfeel with a lingering dark cherry and sour funky flavor on the tongue. Very carbonated, making this brew a sipper.

Hard to chug this brew but with a $25 price tag, you wanna sip on this brew for all its worth. Looking forward to having some more of this. (846 characters)

Draught at the brewpub. Brown color with a red tint and white head. Darkly vinous, tart, and oaky aroma. The flavor is quite sour with lots of oak and sour fruit. Malty underneath, with a less alcohol that I was expecting. Richly smooth and medium-full body. High-gravity sours are new to me, and I sort of miss the light, refreshing quality that you get in a lighter option, but this is really great stuff regardless. (418 characters)

On tap at Boonville

A - Pours mahogany with a 2 fingered cappuccino head. Dissipated moderately slow and left little lacing.

S/T - Brett, grasses, caramel, and tasted as if aged in some sort of a red barrel. Maybe cab sauvignon.

M - Full-bodied and well balanced. The brett is really sour and tangy. Very cloying.

D - Great overall. Not sure if I could finish a whole tulip pour. (383 characters)

450th review. Batch 001x2. Poured from a 750ml bottle into my NBB snifter after letting warm up to around 50 degrees. It opened with an explosive pop and poured a deep mahogany color. The head was disappointing. It was a fizzy brown that never really reached much height or even cover the whole surface. It also quickly faded to nothing. Some faint carb streams. No lacing.

The aroma was also a bit of a letdown. I love RR sour aromas and read some good reviews on this but mine was sorta subtle. No smack in the face funk or sour. It had a good currant and tart cherry aroma plus some oak and wine. Was good but just wish it was more present. Also maybe a little funk as well. Fortunately the taste was really good and had a crisp, sour bite. The finish was very dry and tart. I enjoyed this one but I still would rather have a Supplication or Temptation over it. With those, I could finish the bottle and be immediately seeking trades for another one. Halfway thru this one I was thinking a smaller size bottle would be better.

Overall, a really good AWA from RR but is missing a couple elements from being a classic. Still very enjoyable but not the "I'd kill my mother to get it" like Supplication or Temptation for me. Do highly recommend. I've got one left for cellaring so curious to see how this one ages. (1,315 characters)

Review #100. Thought I would go with a beer I love on tap but have not yet sampled out of the bottle.

750ml poured into a Chimay chalice. Part of Batch 001x4. This bottle was purchased the first day that it went on sale (PTY release day) and has been sitting in my cellar. Comes in at 10%.

A-Serious pop when the cork is taken out of the bottle. Pours a dark brown, which held in front of the light becomes a glowing red. Has a one finger tan head that dissolves into a nice ring and leaves filmy patterns that resemble different Rohrschach patterns. There is also a constant stream of bubbles popping up from the bottom of the glass.

S-It smells like the inside of a wine cave. There are definite notes of funk and must, as well as red grape and oak from the cabernet barrels. Sour fruit is also quite evident.

T-Sour and tart cherries and currants immediately wallop the tongue and this is really what stands out during the first few sips. As my tongue opens up to the sour and tart flavors, the oak and red grape flavors from the cabernet barrels become very evident. This beer leaves an extremely dry finish on the tongue and reminds me in a lot of ways of Korbel's Sparkling Brut Rouge.

M-Medium bodied, great carbonation, crisp, and dry.

D-The 10% is nowhere to be found. It is a great sipper that gets better as my tongue gets more and more used to the sour and tart notes. About as perfect as you can get for a sour.

A great beer to mark #100 on BA. Consecration and Supplication are without a doubt my two favorite sours from Russian River. The bottled version was as good, if not better, than the version I have enjoyed many times up at the pub in Santa Rosa. (1,676 characters)

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A- Poured a murky deep brown with exceptionally lively carbonation which left a tan/caramel colored soda-like head that came and went very fast. Carbonation ribbons did not cease until the end of the drink.

S- Intoxicating and complex. Seemingly imbibed with some sort of dark magick. Alcohol is present here but not overwhelming. Bites the nose with a tangy ripeness of dried fruit. Dates, raisins, currants, dark earth spice and black pepper. Smoke. Just a hint of sweet caramel appears when swirled. Truely complex. I don't think I am qualified to describe this in its fullest.

T- A fragile malt background wants to get through the sourness of this beer. Its there but is overpowered by sour grapes, cranberries, and apricot. Dried currants shine through here as well. This ale becomes more balanced and less aggressive to the senses as it warms up.

M- Light, active, cleansing. Seems to leave no part of the mouth unaffected.

D- Share this one with someone. An ale which needs to be experienced by many. This ale is definitely not for all but is an excellent example of true artistry at work. Beers (and breweries) like this give me hope for the industry and make me proud to say I am a beer drinker (and maker). Thumbs up for originality and passion. A=Pours a deep mahogany with a surprisingly bright head for the color

S=smells very much similar to a merlot, a very interesting floral and fruity smell

T=much like the aroma, and very much like some merlots, sweet, with a tartness.

M=nice, carbonation seems just right, with an aftertaste that lingers

D=good, the bomber was ok, but more would be tough given the sweetness (personal preference) and the alcohol. (416 characters)
