On-tap at the brewery.

A: Served a dark raisin with a very dense and fuzzy head that faded into a thin and long lasting film/collar. A great network of thin lacing was left down the glass.
S: Light notes of booze, grape skins, dark fruits, and lightly tart scents. Fruit dominates.
T: I get flavors of grapes, raisins, plums, dark fruits, juniper, pepper, coriander and a hint of cinnamon. There is a light tartness that boarders on sour. Hops come through in the finish along with a touch of mint. The aftertaste has that sour fruit skin sensation as well and is a little off putting.
M: Thick full body, very fluffy carbonation.
O: Strange quad, strange beer, and not my favorite from the brewery. Not what I was expecting in a quad, but not a terrible beer in and of itself.

Growler shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike!

The beer appears a hazy shade of brown, with little activity in the way of carbonation. The head is undersized, thin, and wispy, generating virtually no lacing upon the tulip glass.

The aroma is of sweet malts, dark fruits, particularly raisins.

In both the nose and flavor, I find myself missing the yeasty, bready character associated with the style. The beer has a prominent raisin and sweetened malt taste, with additional notes of caramels soaked in alcohol.

The beer is pretty smooth, given the double digit abv. Carbonation wasn't an issue as I thought it would be, based on the appearance.

Underwhelming. A mediocre beer from what is possibly the best brewery in the country. Not nearly in the same league with the great Belgian quads like Rochefort, Chimay, Westvleteren, St. Bernardus Abt 12, etc.

On tap poured into a goblet at the brew pub. Beer is a muddy brown, a bit of red highlights on the edges when held up to light, with no head. Swirling the beer in the glass force a half a finger's worth of off white foamy head but it quickly dissipates.

Nose is strong, but a bit one dimensional, just boozy dark fruits, rum soaked figs and raisins showing up.

Tastes follows the nose, lots of boozy dark fruits, that borders on unpleasant after a few sips.

Medium body with low carbonation levels makes the beer a bit slick on the tongue, finishing sweet and boozy on the tongue. Definitely a sipper, though the one dimension flavor profile is a bit disappointing.

Growler shared by Thorpe, every brewery makes a bad beer, unfortunately for Russian River, this is it for them. Completely underwhelming piece of trash beer. I won't be going out of my way for this one ever again.

Beer served in a Russian River wine glass because I can. Beer is brown and clear with low carbonation, almost no head, no lacing.

Aroma is sickingly sweet, like malt syrup disolved in water.

Beer is medium in body and really sweet on lead off. The beer unfolds to reveal almost no interesting yeast character and an overly bitter finish. Not pleasant.

Served as part of a full flight of tasters at Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa. Guessing it would be large, heavy, and malty, I left it until later in the flight to allow to warm a bit and open all the way. This may have been a mistake, my personal tastes considered. A rich dark mahogany color and nose full of cherries and malt led me to take in a hopeful, healthy mouthful. Unfortunately, that first sip was all I drank, as this beer was simply, well, mortifying to my palate. Big and fruity, but cavity-inducingly sweet, my word. This much sugar would need a truckload of hops to balance the flavor. As a result, the drinkability is dismal, suffering a terrible cloying factor. Worth trying, but I can't picture even a sweet beer afficionado getting all the way through a snifter of this.

On a positive note, nice mellow Belgian yeast flavor with no musty aftertaste.

On tap at RR. 1 of my favorite styles so of course had to save room for a full pour of this one.

A-Lacks the thick tan head of most quads. This 1 is much weaker with a foam that quickly breaks down. Color is dark brown but transparent.

S-Weak notes of sweet malts, not nearly as complex as the good Belgians.

T-Definitely a subdued quad. Notes of raisin and other sweet malts. Not much else really there. Missing the yeast fruity esters here.

M-Alcohol is a little more evident than the greats. Fairly thin body.

O-A decent quad but is missing the complexity of my Belgian favorites like St. Bernardus and the alcohol is clearly present. Yet to find a good American version of this style.
