Notes/Commercial Description:
A blonde ale fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces.

A - Sunshine orange mixes with light golden-blond.

S - Peach, musty sour green grapes. Aromas of peach blossoms.

T - Very sour. Lemons, unripe cox apples. Almost mouth-puckering. Not a huge amount of oakiness with a mildly astringent finish. The tartness overpowered the fruit and the funk from the brett.

M - Crisply carbonated which enhances its refreshingness. Body was medium and much less sparkling than champagne, for example.

O - Obviously expectations were fairly high with this one, and as is wont to happen from time to time, they were not met. I found the acidity ate away at the other characteristics which the beer might have offered. Not mind-blowing, and for this drinker, probably not worth the effort required to get hold of the bottled form. Will revisit in the future to see if my palate has changed.

At the source. Crystal clear light golden copper yellow, pure white minor head stays a cap
for the entirety, nice lacing.

Aroma is intoxicatingly seductive, the chardonnay is front and center, defines the experience by any measure. Properly acidic and dry.

Chardonnay again defines the sensation. Impeccable, the ultimate intro brew for the wine drinker. Flawless as a wild as well. The evolution of the flavor is staggering. More than thin bodied crispy lively mouthfeel with just a proper touch of 9 volt.

A: Golden yellow with a white lace head.

S: Sour apples and sour grapes are in the front. Pleasant esters from the souring yeast and bacteria.

T: Sour apples with subtle sour grapes and oak. There is a very subtle sweet caramel flavor from the malts present as well.

M: Nice body and carbonation.

O: Great sour. One of the better ones out there.

A-clear golden color with a decent white head and some lacing

S-sour grapes, yeasty funk, oak, floral

T-tart grapes, yeasty funk, oak, Chardonnay barrels add but are so well-incorporated as to be unable to taste this as a separate distinct aspect of this beer, has a nice dry finish

F-medium body with nice tight carbonation, crisp and tart mouthfeel

O-a delicious beer, so beautifully blended and well-balanced

A-Pours an illuminated toasted straw color. Body is quite hazy. Puffy bleached head sits atop the body. Looks nearly perfect. Long, attention-grabbing lacing stains hug the glass and dry up.

S-The aroma is Brett at its best. Funky, tart and earthen. Pretty floral notes play quite nicely with the barrel notes. Woody, infected Chardonnay with a light, crisp malty underbelly. Fresh, juicy apples, pears and stone fruits. The buzzing funk encompasses all of the other aromatic components.

T-The flavor is blatantly exquisite. The funky, barny, yeasty tartness rushes over the palate. The sips following the first deliver all the notes from the nose but with much more robustness. Warmth is friendly to this ale. The honeysuckle and dandelion stem flavors add depth. The oak is sneaky but noticeable after a few sips... I may even be getting some oak-imparted vanilla flavors. Tart fruits of course.

M-Perfect body; relatively light and highly carbonated. The first sip seemingly explodes all over my mouth; the bubbles roll over every inch.

O/D-Another royal brew by Russian River. Too complex to ever fully describe. Too drinkable to ever fully feel satisfied. A glass of this at the brewpub was truly inspiring.

Pours a golden yellow with two fingers of head. Head is white and persists well throughout consumption. Smells like white wine and definitely sour style brew. Taste is amazing and definitely brings forward Chardonnay, sour fruit - maybe cherries - and a long sour note to finish. Great beer/wine brew.

On-tap at the source. New batch just went on the day before.

A: Pours a slightly hazy pale yellow with a fine-bubbled white head which leaves rings of lace.

N: Bright, bright white grapes bursting in the morning sunlight. Floral and fresh cut grass. Mild funk and must.

T: Vinous, balanced mild wood tannins, tart and fruity with lemon zest.

M: Light body and moderate carbonation. Slightly prickly on the tongue. Crisp and wonderful.

O: How does one describe "delicious"? The chardonnay barrels, the funk, the grape all meld into a symphony. I liked it.

Batch 6 served in Tap at the brewery a while ago

A. Pale gold with 1 finger frothy cream head with great retention and abundant lacing.

S. Chardonnay grapes, green apples, earthy funk, oak

T. Accurately described by many as a beer like wine with huge Chardonnay wine and oak character with brett funk and fruit notes. A slightly bitter and pretty sour finish.

M. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Smooth. Moderate etoh warming.

O. Really amazing wild, but I still love supplication the best.

A: straw color, clear, minimal head and lacing

S: sourness, grape, apple, and other light fruit

T: sour, but not overpowering. Grape was next, some butter flavor (chardonnay barrels, they say), apple, and aftertaste of pear and light grain.

M: medium-high carbonation, medium body, great for the style.

O: great beer, but I'm not quite into wilds enough to fully get this beer. I'll have to come back to it.

On tap for Churchill's Renaissance at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a clear golden color with a tan head that settles to nothing. Small streaks of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some fruity and grain aromas. Taste is pretty much the same and there is an acidic quality on the finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good wild ale but I think this one smells better than it tastes.

Had this on 2011-12-03 in Paoli, PA at TJ's (from tasting notes)

A - Very clear yellow-orange with a very short, white head and little lacing.

S - Mild fruit floral aromas and brett funk.

T - Delicious. Plenty of cherry/berry sourness with a delicalte light malt touch and some floral hops. Dries quickly. Perfect balance.

M - Light body and medium carbonation. Smooth, crisp, refreshing.

O - It has such a great balance that it is hard to break it down to component parts. A delicious sour.

I don't normally like beer. But this beer is an exception. It was on tap at the beer shoppe.

Appearance wise, it looks like piss. Like the yellow color when you don't drink enough water. Well, maybe you had 3 glasses of water total.

Smell wise, I couldn't really put my finger on it. It smelled like the persian stew karafs which is basically celery stew. But seriously, the stew is yummy (make sure it's with beef).

Taste wise, oh this is special. It tastes like a big mac. For reals. Like dipping a piece of onion in the big mac sauce. But also, like taking a big bite of the actual burger. close second if your local mc donalds is closed.

As for mouthfeel, it was bubbly. That's all I have to say.

Overall, delicious drink. Go for it.

Consumed Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Blue Palms Brewhouse, Hollywood, CA in a snifter.

Beer is a light golden color with a fine skin of white foam.

Aroma is nondescript with just a slight tart note.

Flavor is all sourness. Tastes like white grape juice mixed with a small amount of white vinegar. Winced all the way through this one. Try as I may, I get nothing but that one note. No bitterness, no malt, no sweetness, no wood, just white grapes and sourness.

Unremarkable mouthfeel.

On draft at the brewpub.

Pours a clearish light golden color with a wispy off white head. Aroma is initially vinous with mild brett. Grapes, apple, oak and lemon. Flavor is mildly fruity, with strong white wine and oak and a slightly funky finish. Medium bodied with a slightly sour, dry finish.

I had this at the RRBC before a sampler flight of all their beers on Saturday 12/10. It came in a tulip glass. This review is from notes.

A: A big fluffy, frothy head of about 2 fingers. Great retention and nice glass lacing.

S: There is a strong white wine aroma with tart pears and grapes. Yeast aromas give the nose some funk. The aroma is definitely complex and I'm sure I could have spent more time discovering its intricacies.

T: Wow! As complex as the aroma, but clearly has hints of sour apple or pear and oaky white wine. The tannins give this some tartness and bite.

M: Light, well-carbonated, thirst-quenching and 7.25% ABV not so noticeable.

On-tap at Green Dragon Brewpub. Poured into a large snifter.

A - Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. Tons of lacing stick to the sides of the glass. A solid stream of bubbly carbonation can be seen shooting up the center of the glass.

S - As I expected, the first smell that hits my nose is the funky Brett. Combines with the tartness from the sour grapes/lemons and the aromas of white wine and oak from the barrel aging. Creates the aroma I expect from a Russian River sour.

T - Brett funk and oak pop out to me first. Some white wine nuances follow. It's wrapped up with apples, grapes and lemon to create a nice fruity tartness that combines well with the funky sour flavor from the yeast.

M - Light bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Crisp, effervescent and smooth with a dry finish. Very easy to drink. I found it quite refreshing.

O - Another great sour from RR. Everything really works in unison to create a refreshing sour ale that I would love to enjoy again.

On-tap at Pizza Port OB, I'm assuming batch 006 but have no way of knowing.
Pours a clear and light golden blonde with almost no head, seeing this beer set in front of me didn't excite me very much, that did change when I had a wiff of it though. The smell is rich of grapes, tartness and a funkiness almost wine like. The taste follows suite with sour grapes, tartness, champagne, natural earth funk, almost like a riesling. Lighter bodied with a dry finish, very champagne like. This is really a good beer.

On tap at the RR brewpub. Pours a light blond color with a little bit of head. The aroma definitely has the funkiness of the sour notes, along with some light fruits like apples and pears, almost white wine-like. The taste is nice and tart without too much puckering, and again some more pear, apples, grapes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation, and comes across smooth, yet finishes dry.

This is a great beer for all sour fans: those you want to introduce to sours, and those that are already fans. It's that good.

On tap at Bottleworks in Seattle, poured into a tulip.

Pours a nice light amber with a small white head. Nose is tart, funky and crisp, very approchable.

Taste is almost perfect, it's tart and tasty without being too acidic or sour. There's a nice bretty taste that drys out your mouth and makes you want more. Very, very solid beer and still awesome on draft!

My favorite sour yet. Uncanny balance, layers and layers of grass, goat, saison-ish funk, lemons and other tasty tart-ness countered with chardonay style tropical flavors, baltant but not overstated oak, and custardy malt with hops all up front. Dry and lovely.

A: Pale yellow color with a thin off-white head.

S: Chardonnay, wood, lemon and a touch of white vinegar.

T: Green apples, a punch of sourness and some apple cider vinegar on the finish. A definite touch of lemon as well. This is definitely the most delicate of the RR sours I've had but everything about it just works. Amazing.

Temptation pours out as a pretty typical looking blonde ale, golden yellow color with a bit of haze to it. The head was foamy and white leaving a bit of lacing. The smell of the beer smells a lot like Chardonnay with a bit of wild yeast coming through in the back end. The taste of the beer is actually pretty good. I was surprised that it really didn't give off much of a pucker factor after each sip. The flavors of white wine, tart grapes and some wheat are what I'm picking up here. The mouthfeel was pretty good, almost refreshing. Overall I was very impressed by this beer. The flavors and the other elements that it brings to the table were really good. I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy this one but it turned out to be a success.

First had: on tap at Monk's, Philly, PA

Wow! Beautiful beer. Poured a hazy golden color (though sometimes crystal clear) with a big fluffy cloud of a head that retains well and leaves some decent lacing. Packs a fruity punch right from the first time the aroma hits; citrus and white wine. Tasted a lot stronger than it was. Lots of fruit, both sweet and tart, pears and peaches, apricots, and apple peels, wine-soaked oak, with touches of vanilla bean and lemon, toasted grains hint to a solid malt base. Nice and complex, balanced, light-medium mouthfeel, very dry, and highly drinkable.

Sampled on tap at the Falling Rock Tap House in Denver during Colorado Beer Week (4/10/11). For a WI guy, the RR -tion fest was heaven on earth. Expertly poured into a RR tulip.

Appearance is a brilliant golden color. This beer WANTS you to drink it. Absolutely stunning look. A billowy cloud of white foam crackled at the top of the rim. Yes please.

Aroma is a blend of floral spices and fruity citrus, a little hop note dances around as well. A sour funk typical with RR beers is apparent.

Temptation, for me, had a sweet taste up front with a sour finish. A sweet then sour then, fruity progression almost defies logic. You're drinking a classy beer here, folks. An impossibly crisp ale.

A fizzy, bubbly carbonation fits this beer nicely. Lemony yeast tastes linger as well, but isn't annoying - but inviting.

Haven't had a beer like this ever - haven't had anything like it since. Overall a very new experience and would love to imbibe in again. An interesting, bold 'American Wild Ale'/
