Enjoyed on tap at the brew pub.
Poured into one of Russian Rivers globe like goblets.

Appearance: (4.5)
Pours a hazy, extremely dark brown, almost black with a 2 finger light tan head with surprisingly long retention considering that this is a sour porter aged in wine barrels for over a year.

Aroma: (4.5)
Tart cherry pie filling fills your nostrils as you raise the glass to your nose. There are accompanying notes of lemon juice, red wine vinegar(very light presence) and some really nice barnyard funk and horse blankets from the Brettanomyces. The wine barrel definitely makes its presence known; there is a sizable berry infused, coconut-y woodsy presence before the roasted malts of the porter base beer round off this very intriguing nose. The lightly smokey and toasty malts come out more and more as the beer warms.

Taste: (4.5)
A bright burst of lemon juice and of more of the tart cherry pie filling that is found in the aroma strikes your palate first. There is a light coating of brett funk that encapsulates the mouth puckering sourness. The beer finishes very dry with a long, lingering sour and bitter finish. The both the porter's roasted malts and the wine barrel come out very strongly in the finish; roasted coffee, light chocolate from the malts and a peppery, vinous and vanilla note from the wood. My gut says this was either aged in Pinot Noir or Cabernet barrels.

Mouthfeel: (4.5)
Robust, slightly creamy with lively, snappy carbonation.

Overall (4.5)
Yet another amazing wine barrel aged sour from Russian River. Apparently, this has been aged for at least a year and half in wine barrels and even after that long of an incubation, the roasted malts still come out from underneath the onslaught of funky sourness. Very impressive and I highly recommend this beer. Awesome!

Dark brown almost black beer with calm fluffy effervescence provides a beautiful presentation of a very dark beer consistent with the underlying porter style. The aroma is a dense but not overpowering sour cherry with a complexity that escapes this reviewer's ability to provide adequate creative description. Taste is solid - sour but not overpowering. Complex and lovely. Mouthfeel is nice - not too Puckering. I could drink several in succession. A beautiful beer. A beautiful experience. This is an exceptional sour.

On tap at the brewpub the other day.

The beer pours a fairly dark brown color with pretty good head retention and lacing. On the nose, the sour component is front and center, as I get considerable vinegar, with just a hint of smoke, light vanilla and light coffee. The flavor profile is just more of the same, and the sourness in this beer was nearly painful. The menu describes this as a sour porter, but the porter component is really pretty deeply submerged between the layers of sour. Like the nose, there's a hint of smoke, coffee and vanilla in this dry, sour beer, but the sour completely dominates the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, and the alcohol doesn't seem particularly high in this beer (which it isn't). Otherwise, the finish is long and very, very sour.

Clearly a beer for sour lovers and not a beer for porter fans. Could not finish my one glass and could not find any willing takers at the bar to drink the rest of it. Oh well....
