Russian River Brewing was the focal point of our brief visit to northern California; having heard and read so much about PtE, not to mention PtY and all the variations on Catholic behaviour in Belgian style offerings. Thus it was with immense anticipation that we strolled down Fourth Street on a sunny Saturday morning in search of our prey. Unlike the micros with which we are familiar with in Chicagoland that are tucked away in nondescript industrial estates, RR is right downtown Santa Rosa slap in the middle of a shopping/restaurant center. I wonder how many Santa Rosans are aware of how blessed they are to have one of the world's premier breweries right there.
Aware of the tendency of this place to become crowded we made an early start, gratifying to find the doors open at 11. While this may offend the more puritanical beer drinker, the kind that thinks the sun must be below the yardarm (in this case it was barely risen above it), we shamelessly quaffed our first PtE only minutes after finishing the breakfast croissant.
Even at 11 there was a fair trickle of people entering for their luncheon pint, which made for a pleasant atmosphere. Beer selection of course speaks for itself. We were gratified to find beer offered in halves (oh and the pints are real - not those fake Shaker "pints"). If you do buy a pint, the price is very sporting ($4.50 for a 20 oz pint of PtE); the halves at $3.25 not such a deal but nice that they are offered.
The staff, that sometimes take a beating from reviewers, were of the pierced and tattooed variety, and perhaps they had occasional occasion to partake of the medical marijuana, were efficient, friendly and courteous to us. I think betraying a genuine interest in and reverence for the products on the part of the customer helps. A fellow beside us was clearly something of an authority as he entered brandishing a pile of beer magazines and books. He provided several good suggestions as to where else to go.
Did not try the food so cannot speak to that. All-in-all, the visit did not disappoint despite the high expectations.

I went here the week after 4th of July, on a Saturday after Visiting Ranch Obi-wan which is not far. We had to wait about an hour to get in but unlike Seattle which doesn't let kids in, it was fine here in California! I had my two year old with me and he entertained the people outside while we were waiting. And the girl at the front gave him an apple juice to sip on too. Finally sat down and ordered some Pliney which was great and some Damnation which was better. Bought some to take back to Texas since they don't sell there"WHY NOT?" I wish you guys would sell in Texas like some other local Breweries in your same town. Anyway Pizza and beer was awasome and had a great time. I'm from California, but in Texas now....miss it sometimes but don't miss the high cost of living!
