Bottle into Sam Adams sensory glass, Best By date of 5/2011.
Pours black at the thickest point, with some ruby brown showing through around the narrower sections of the glass. One-finger khaki head on top settles into a thin but fairly persistent cap, and some solid walls left after each sip.
Nose is medium roast coffee with a bit of sugar, sprinkled with a dusting of dry cocoa. Gets just a bit leafy where the hops seem to be hiding. Mellow.
Taste again rings up as mellow coffee roastiness with a hint of sugar to sweeten the deal, though the sweetness runs into a light citric note that isn't there in the nose, which fades to a low-key bitterness left lightly lingering on the palate, calling up just a barely-there burnt note after sitting there a few moments. This one is straight forward, no slight of hand to be seen, but quite enjoyable nonetheless.
Mouthfeel is crisp but with a light creaminess to it, medium-light in body, almost like a well-done-but-overly-roasty schwarzbier. Nicely drinkable, though not so much so that you get carried away.

Appearance: Pours a deep brown with two fingers of nice khaki colored head that fades quickly, solid retention of chunky lacing.
Smell: Also solid with chocolate and smoke up front followed by ground coffee beans and more roastiness. Solid for a porter for sure.
Taste: Nice and sweet, some bitter chocolate and a nice roastiness to it. A bit of coffee flavor but not a ton, very smooth.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with low carbonation, could perhaps benefit with a bit more body but this is smooth and creamy.
Overall: This is a very good, almost great porter from Red Brick. First of their offerings that I've tried and I would definitely pick up a bottle again.
