I recieved this in Secret Santa '11. I poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a SA perfect pint, opaque brown pour, moderate tan head, little lacing. Bourbon and vanilla on the nose. The taste is a nice blend of hot bourbon, light vanilla, toffee, and a hint of oak, boozey finish. The body is a bit thin, but not bad. The carbonation is normal, rediculously easy drinking 11% brew. I really liked this beer, surprised to see it labeled as an imperial brown, I was thinking it is a BA barleywine.

A-Opaque brown with a thick gorgeous tan head that lasts forever and creates some nice cascading.

S-Bourbon, alcohol, floral yet malty as well, and some brown sugar

T-Bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, alcohol sweetness, hint of milk chocolate and coconut

M-Thick and creamy

D-The high abv. and complexity make it a true sipper, but easy to drink given its high abc.

Overall, great beer as it is complex and delicious. I highly recommend trying it.

12oz bottle received as a great extra from jpmclaug in one our trades. Thanks Jason! Poured into a Brooklyn snifter.

A - Pours a deep, milk chocolate brown color with decent clarity - just a bit of haze. Not much of a head forms on top of this - what briefly appeared fizzed away quickly leaving behind a thin collar of cream colored bubbles around the edge of the glass.

S - No doubt this one spent some time in a bourbon barrel. Bourbon aroma is intense, sweet and quite boozy, some wafts of vanilla appear and disappear, caramel. Smells like this is likely to be a bit hot.

T - Surprisingly, the bourbon is perhaps a bit muted and there is a much better balance here. Bourbon is definitely right up front and yields plenty of flavors - lots of vanilla especially. Sweet caramelized sugars and some butter underneath with the boozy aspects of the bourbon showing up towards the swallow, although quite well controlled. Alcohol isn't as big a factor as I expected at 11%.

M - Medium bodied with an equivalent carbonation which is a bit tingly on the tongue. Bourbon is rather well controlled but still manages some warmth as well as a tingle on the lips on each sip. Pretty smooth for a beer of this strength.

O - Overall, a pretty good bourbon barrel aged brown ale. Bourbon will likely mellow a bit more with some age and this should become even nicer when that happens. Bourbon has a bit too much presence and masks most of the base beer's flavors. A little less bourbon intensity should allow these to shine thru more.

brown, with a smallish head was lifted up onto the top, but this was quickly replaced by a thin layer of film across the top. Carbonation was visible in the very clear brew.

The smell was rich and sweet. Predominant aroma was a caramel with a touch of an earthy malt. A light feeling was released by this, so you really did not think you were going into anything too terribly heavy. As it warmed you could pick up a roasted or burnt smell coming though as well as a touch of a hop note rounding out the back. caramel that you caught right up front along with a burnt or roasted wood flavor.

Pours a super thin dark brown with a small quickly dissipating head. Smells of toasted grains, slight bourbon and vanilla dominate the nose. First sip is disappointingly thin but flavorful thanks to bourbon and oak flavors gained in the barrel. As it warms the vanilla takes on a larger role and is complimented with oak and bourbon. Base beer, I am guessing is nothing too special on its own but with the oak and bourbon combines for a fairly good beer. I am guessing these bottles are all hand filled as many of my bottles have low fills and many high fills. Not a bad beer at all…just could have been amazing with a stronger base beer.
