Tasted On: 07-02-2012
Freshness: Best by 06-21-2012
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Thistle
Purchased: 4-pack from Grace's, Nashville

A: Clear, dark brown color topped by a tan head of 2 fingers. Good lacing and retention.

S: Toasted malts and coffee highlight the aromas, plus smoked woody smells with an acidic and sour note.

T: Roasted malts, smoked peat, and cooked caramel, with an earthy bitterness.

M: Carbonation is low to medium. The beer finishes with toasted grains and a slight sweetness, plus an acidic character.

O: Not too impressed with this wee heavy - the sour/acid notes seemed to be a big detraction. It was about a week past the best by date, but I don't think that should have affected the flavor much.

Held onto this one for a little longer than intended - pulled it out of the back of my fridge. The pour is fairly uninspiring, a slightly red-tinted brown color with a tiny head. The aroma is nice though, there's a nice smoky peat aroma with a touch of malts. The taste is really just what you get, a pretty solid amount of smoky peat and a bit of malts. The mouthfeel is lighter-bodied and very smooth, and the drinkability is solid. Overall, a pretty good Wee Heavy that's held up rather well.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Central Waters snifter. Thanks to my friend Audi for bringing this up from the ATL.

A: Pours clear copper color. Aggressive pour leads to a half finger head that disappears slowly leaving decent lacing.

S: Sweet malts, molasses, toffee and some dried fruit to boot.

T: Not overly complex. Sweetness faded from the nose. Some scorched wood seems to be present in this as well.

M: Medium bodied, thinner feel (not thin, just not big bodied). Good carbonation.

O: Easy drinker, decent wee heavy. Not overwhelmingly great.

Comes out of the tap an opaque dark chocolaty brown with a fine-bubbled pale yellow-beige head that leaves very generous lacing - more like a curtain than lacing! Malty aroma has notes of cloves, caramel and cinnamon. Satisfying malty flavor delights with notes of cloves and caramel. Texture has firm body and plenty of tingle. Look for this one, laddies and lasses!

12 oz bottle poured into tulip. There's a freshness number printed but hell if I can translate it. Received as part of the n00b BIF from BulbMan - thanks!

Pours a clear but dark brown. A finger of tan head that fades quickly.

Smells of cured meats and molasses. There's a smokey element.

Yeah, the smoke is definitely in the taste, too. It's subtle but present. Molasses and malt at the forefront. No real bitterness to speak of, but the smokiness keeps the sweetness in check.

Medium body and fairly high carbonation. Mouth stays coated pretty well.

Not a bad scotch ale. Personally, I prefer a bit less smoke, but that's me.
