A: two finger off white head on a clear pure amber body.

S: sweet caramel, peat and smokey.

T: sweet caramel up front quickly fades to a peaty and smokey finish which leaves little to be desired.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: a very nice version if the style. A touch light but nicely flavorful.

12 ounce bottle - $2.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. What appears to be a "drink by" date of 06/22/12 posted on the label.

Appearance: Pours out a dark brown body with an inch-tall layer of ecru suds. Heavy smudges of lacing on the way down.

Smell: It's sweet and smoky with deep, full maltiness smelling of toasted bread crusts, caramel sauce, and brown sugar rounded out by a note of dark fruits.

Taste: Satisfyingly sweet maltiness full of bready, toasty, caramelly goodness, but also some dark brown sugar, a bit of nuttiness, and a fair amount of meaty smokiness. Sultanas glazed with tawny port. Very, very low hop character with little bitterness. Smooth, sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: It's quite good. After numerous years of some hits and many misses, this was actually a very pleasant surprise and will be the first from the Brick Mason series I'll be heading out to really stock up on.

Comes out of the tap an opaque dark chocolaty brown with a fine-bubbled pale yellow-beige head that leaves very generous lacing - more like a curtain than lacing! Malty aroma has notes of cloves, caramel and cinnamon. Satisfying malty flavor delights with notes of cloves and caramel. Texture has firm body and plenty of tingle. Look for this one, laddies and lasses!

Held onto this one for a little longer than intended - pulled it out of the back of my fridge. The pour is fairly uninspiring, a slightly red-tinted brown color with a tiny head. The aroma is nice though, there's a nice smoky peat aroma with a touch of malts. The taste is really just what you get, a pretty solid amount of smoky peat and a bit of malts. The mouthfeel is lighter-bodied and very smooth, and the drinkability is solid. Overall, a pretty good Wee Heavy that's held up rather well.

32oz growler from Moondog Growlers (Marietta, GA). 12.99. Served in a Laughing Skull pint glass.

Pours a deep amber tinged brown with 3 fingers light tan head. Plenty of lacing all the way down.

Light smells of caramel, dark sugars and... smoke?

Yep, definately smoke in there. Much more powerful in the taste than I was expecting. Also peat and burnt brown sugars with dark and smokey malts. Sweet but brief aftertaste.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, almost creamy feel.

All-in-all it's good but not what I was expecting. Admittedly I haven't tried too many in the wee heavy style but this one was smokey. Very. Not bad at all, just different. I continue to enjoy the complexity of Red Brick's Brick Mason series and I'll most likely even pick up a 4 pack once they hit the shelves to see how it grows over ther next 6-9 months.

Tasted On: 07-02-2012
Freshness: Best by 06-21-2012
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Thistle
Purchased: 4-pack from Grace's, Nashville

A: Clear, dark brown color topped by a tan head of 2 fingers. Good lacing and retention.

S: Toasted malts and coffee highlight the aromas, plus smoked woody smells with an acidic and sour note.

T: Roasted malts, smoked peat, and cooked caramel, with an earthy bitterness.

M: Carbonation is low to medium. The beer finishes with toasted grains and a slight sweetness, plus an acidic character.

O: Not too impressed with this wee heavy - the sour/acid notes seemed to be a big detraction. It was about a week past the best by date, but I don't think that should have affected the flavor much.

Served on tap at Summit's Snellville. Reviewed from notes.

(Appearance) Pours a deep ruby-red tinged light brown. A thin layer of head retains a bit below average. Appearance is decent. 3

(Smell) Aroma consists of toasted malt, a hint of berry fruits make up the nose of this brew. Overall the nose carries a subtle sweetness. Potency is a medium-low. 3.5

(Taste) Mostly the toasted malts and substantial toasted wood chips are the dominant flavors in the mouth. Fruit flavors aren't as dominant but come through well in big sips. Balance is just about right, a bit wood and toast heavy but close. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Very slick smoothness keeps this beer on the subtle mild side. Alcohol presenc is a low. Body is a medium. Pretty solid pairing. 4

(Overall) A pretty good take by Red Brick. Worth a shot considering the lack of Scotch Ales in the area. Get it while it's here if for the right price. 3.5

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Central Waters snifter. Thanks to my friend Audi for bringing this up from the ATL.

A: Pours clear copper color. Aggressive pour leads to a half finger head that disappears slowly leaving decent lacing.

S: Sweet malts, molasses, toffee and some dried fruit to boot.

T: Not overly complex. Sweetness faded from the nose. Some scorched wood seems to be present in this as well.

M: Medium bodied, thinner feel (not thin, just not big bodied). Good carbonation.

O: Easy drinker, decent wee heavy. Not overwhelmingly great.
