Bottled on 04/18/13.

A - Black with one finger of light brown head with good retention.

S - Deep roast, chocolate, spice; some pine and citrus aromas.

T - Roast and cocoa up front with a hint of coffee. Moderate bitterness mid palate with some pine and lighter citrus flavours. Really well balanced.

M - Medium body. Creamy. Some stickiness. Light carbonation.

bottle poured into tulip shaped glass

Appearance: dark black with a thick brownish head

Smell: The aroma features a complex tropical fruit notes of mango and peach intermingling with classic citrus and pine, as well as a slight hint of cocoa. It is very piney and citrusy overall also blended nicely with a hint of coffee.

Taste: dark roasted malts blended nicely with coffee and a variety of hops mostly on the piney and citrusy side. The flavor is mainly resinous and piney, complimented by a velvety mouth-feel, and finishes with lingering notes of grapefruit and bittersweet chocolate.

Mouthfeel: medium boddied with moderate carbonation and a bitter-sweet, piney coffee dry finish.

Overall: This is an excellent brew by Red Brick Brewing Co. This beer is perfect to enjoy during a cookout. This is definitely more on the sweet malty side. I was expecting more of a hop explosion since they use 6 different types of hops and over 2lbs of hops in each bach, but surprisingly this is fairly balanced--more on the sweet malty side. This is another excellent underrated beer by Red Brick. I would definitely buy this again.

My first reaction was "this beer is all over the place". It's smokey malty hoppy. If this is a rye...I wasn't feeling it. This is more a black IPA / stout. Mis-labeling aside.
.I actually liked the beer for all qualities above ...smokey malty hoppy. Not a happy hour beer...definitely an after dinner/ dessert beer. I like it...just change the name.

Thanks to AtlCarl for this extra in a recent box that I've barely been able to gnosh on with our horrific schedule. 12 oz. bottle with the word 'rye' on it, so no sense in delaying any further.

The pour is a light black with small, sporadic bubbly. Submerging my nose in the beer, I pick up faint schocolate, & little enough of that. Smells like sleep.

Black-Eye Rye is beer out of a blender. The rye interacts very oddly with the hops: rye is up front, spicy, & the spicy blends right into the piney hops. A sharp roast adds to the bonfire of confusion. Backing vocals include an earthiness & that incidental chocolate. A bit grainy, & pretty easy to drink.

The defining characteristic of the beer is the mash-up of kicky flavors that don't really mesh well, but certainly provide plenty of interest. Pretty good beer.

Red Brick's Black-Eye Rye is brewed in the style of an American Style India Black Ale and is the 2nd release in the Brick Mason 2013 series, the 6th overall since the 2012 series began. Released in April 2013 in 4 packs for roughly $10.99. Red Brick's reserve releases are becoming increasingly difficult to find in my choice beverage stores, so good luck landing a 4 pack of this beer. I drove to a beverage superstore in Suwanee just to get to try this.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Brick Mason snifter. Served north of 56º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy crisp mocha cream tone head over a very dark brown, near black body. Retention is slightly above average, lacing is light and streaked. Despite a short-lived head quality, It's a pretty solid appearance for a Black Rye IPA. 4

(Smell) This beer boasts 6 different hop varieties; Chinook, Calypso, Citra, Experimental #05256, Cascade & Bravo. The aroma showcases mostly the piney and resinous ones, with some herbal notes and a touch of floral behind. The malt bill backs it up with a pinch of bittersweet chocolate, a medium bready rye bill and a smack of husky caramel. Sweetness is moderate- some mild hints of buttery diacetyl malt are a common find for this style, though neither distracting nor offensive in this particular beer. Potency is medium/high and balance is right on. Despite such a variety of hops, I'm a little disappointed still by the stunted presence of the hop bill, it's likely bitter enough, but the aroma is a touch muted. 3.5

(Taste) Up front, a resinous and herbal sweeping of high-alpha hops, follows through with a touch of chocolate and caramel malt, and a bready thickness from the rye. Finishes with a starkly dry lingering note of pine and grain. The malt sweetness is just mild enough to carry the body and yet show off the depth of the malt character and the intensity of the hop choices. Despite being a high gravity beer, this is a considerably drinkable beer, not even close to the 8% alcohol by volume it carries. I like the reserved sweetness in this beer too, it's not too dry nor cloying in flavor either. This beer boasts a lot of hop abrasiveness and malt character, although the rye doesn't play as much of a role as the label brags, it's a welcome contribution to the textures of this beer. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is mellow and smooth, with just a touch of air on the finish. Medium thickness from the bready rye, a note of grain, baker's chocolate and piney alphas lend some depth to the body. Body is a medium/heavy for the style and medium+ overall. Alcohol is well hidden in this beer, likely concealed beneath the waves of abrasive hop bitterness. I appreciate the mellow carbonation and textures of this beer. 4.25

(Overall) Red Brick pulls off another very nice style. For a Black IPA, this has a great deal of sharp, piney and resinous hop variety and potency. The malt bill gives it a mellow roasty and bready backbone without pushing an overbearing sweetness. The drinkability is high and the flavors all gel very well. This is certainly a win in Red Brick's book. I don't regret seeking this beer out in the least. 4

Brick Mason series #6

Pours black, with a light brown head, nice lace, good retention. Aroma was spicy, piny hops, chocolate, roast malts. Upper medium bitterness level, piny, resins, chocolate, roasted malts, slight brown sugar, mild coffee. Creamy feel, somewhat velvety, good carbonation and clean finishing.

Comes off as a hopped up stout. Good balance though, and the stout qualities are real nice and the hoppiness backs it well.
