Tried a bottle at a Vietnamese restaurant in NW Calgary. Makes me a tad depressed to ponder the hows and whys of American adjunct lager becoming the international beer style of choice. In any event, this particular example is a pale lemon yellow, with a more impressive head than average, maybe an inch and a half of white foam that manages to persist longer than three seconds. Smells like husky pale malts, modeling clay, a faint dry grass note. One has to focus rather intently to smell much of anything. I will say that these adjunct lagers do in fact taste different from one another if you pay attention (i.e., if you are willing to do so, which is hit and miss, granted). This is quite a citric example of the style, watery, very astringent, coarse, and metallic, with some sour fruit (green apple?), chalky grape, stewed leaf, and dry grass notes apparent amidst the grain husk backbone. Classic rice lager profile albeit with a vague sweetness can be picked out from the savage carbonation and grainy milieu. Not a terrible accompaniment to spicy lemongrass chilli chicken and a decent lawnmower beer, assuming one doesn't just drink a blonde ale or session IPA or something. If you don't live in Nunavut, you can probably find something better than this style for summertime chugging.

12oz bottle BBD 032923 (missed the black print on the neck in the store) poured into a shaker pint glass at fridge temp 4.9% ABV. The beer pours bright light gold in color with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island. The aroma is faint and resembles beer. The taste is semisweet pale malt with fruity hints and mild bitterness. Mouthfeel is thin bodied with above average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good AAL, especially considering it's 18 months old.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden amber color with a puffy head of white foam. The head fades rather fast, leaving a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is heaviest of a grainy smell mixed with some caramel and a bit of hay. Along with these aromas comes notes of rice and harvest fruits. Overall, it is pretty light.
Taste – The taste starts out with a grainy and slightly bready taste mixed with a light caramel malt backbone flavor. Along with these flavors comes a bit of a paper and a light grassy hay and yeast taste. A touch of peach and a bit of toffee come toward the end, leaving one with a still rather crisp, and relatively mild taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body is thin and light with a carbonation level that is average and middle of the road. For the style and the flavors, the feel is good and makes for a very easy sipper.
Overall – Ah an OK lager, but nothing too special. Worth a try. Bonus: Its my first brew from Vietnam.

March 2006: 330 ml bottle, in France. ABV is 4.9%. Golden colour, low head. Moderate corn and rice aroma, not unpleasant. Flavour has some alcoholic notes despite the moderate ABV, acceptable hops. Better than I feared.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: light golden hue with a crystal-clear body and a finger of frothy eggshell foam with pretty decent retention. Not bad!

Smell: malt is rather sweet and there's just a hint of the plasticy aroma I associate with certain adjuncts, but it's mostly pretty inoffensive.

Taste: similarly sweet malt but with some of that plasticy adjuncty thing I don't love; it also has a bit of a watery flavor going on. I mean, it's low flavor content is a saving grace if anything. There's a bit of bitterness, though, which isn't too bad.

Mouthfeel: light body but with a good carbonation and a surprisingly good creaminess.

Overall: inoffensive, but I'm unlikely to seek this out.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Bottled 8/27/19, so over 2 years old. Ouch.

Looks okay. Clear golden yellow body with slow streams of carbonation. Small white head shrinks to a thin ring and faint covering, no lacing.

Not much on the nose, good or bad.

On tasting, it's clean and goes down easy. Slightly sweet, but no real taste to it.

Mouth below medium, finish clean, a little sweet and drying.

Overall, doesn't taste bad at all, and it's not watery. Just doesn't taste like much of anything.

Bia Saigon Export has a thick, white head and a clear, bubbly gold appearance, with lots of roiling white chunks, throughout. Some lacing is evident. The aroma is of biscuit. The flavor is similar, with sweetness and noticeable grassy hop bitterness. Bia Saigon Export has a medium body and a crisp finish.
