A nice local hangout but no "no smoking" section so be ready to take up the habit. Food is pretty good, mostly hamburgers and french fries. Good luck finding your hamburger under the mound of fries they cover it with. Service is good, most of the wait staff are friendly and seem to even know something about the draft beers. Nothing unusual on the draft menu though. They have a nice selection of singles in the cooler so most of the time that is your best bet. Parking can be a hassle on a crowded night, as can be getting a table. If you're out for a night with the guys, it's a great place.

Alright selection of beer. Hard to determine which beers to get because there is no menu for them only a sliding glass cooler to look at.

Finally visited a place considered to be a University of Dayton institution - Tank's. Which is apparently THE great place for breakfast, but I came in the late afternoon to catch up with friends and play cards.

Atmosphere: Typical sports bar - plenty of tables, chairs and TVs, but, lots of old BMC signs all over the walls rather than sport team memorabilia. The place was clean, but worn. All of the chair cushions were very well worn, as were the bar stools. Still, good enough.

Quality: An interesting mix of macro beers and US craft and imports. Lots of the cheap stuff, but, and equal amount of craft and good imports. For example, Bud and Yuengling in abundance, as well as lower end foreign imports, but, a whole bottle fridge case of US craft and a another case of imports - with the imports about 50/50 the well known macro imports (ex Beck's, Tecate, Corona) and high quality imports (Sam Smith, Pilsner Urquel, Franzikaner). No menus though to see what is on tap or in the fridges. You need to ask or wander over and look.

Service: Perfectly fine. The waitress had the taps memorized and came around often enough, but not too much to be annoying.

Selection: Plenty to choose from for every taste. See my comments about quality. 10 taps and 2 full multi-shelf fridge cases of bottles, with everythings from stouts to lambics .

Food: Good but not amazing bar food.

I probably would come back again, but I think I would have been more charmed if I had gone here while a student at the University of Dayton. Otherwise a good, but not amazing bar joint. Good prices though.

honestly, in the dayton area, it doesn't come much better than tanks. it's not the selection, or the prices, or even really the food (which, although stellar, has taken a southern dip the last couple of years), it comes down to the combination of all of the above. seriously, find another place in dayton that has this local neighborhood feel, combined with selection, prices, and CRAZY good bar food (highly recommend the tank burger with the home-made chip dip).

it just all comes together to make just about THE place to go for an all around great experience...

This place is awesome. $5 dollar pints on most craft beer. I ordered the large chili cheese fries assuming it would be like the chili cheese fries everywhere else. No this was the biggest plate of fries I have ever seen, and only cost me $4.99. They have a lit up fridge full of different bottles, including 12oz of dogfish, arrogant bastard bombers, and a few different Ohio brews. The draft selection changes pretty regularly here, I don't think it's ever been the same twice. I've seen Victory, Great Lakes, Founders, Bells, Rogue, Hoppin Frog, Buckeye Brewing Co., magic hat, Breckenridge, Stone, and several others. If your ever in Downtown Dayton, I would suggest stopping in and getting some fries and beer.

If your looking for an alternative to a chain, this is a good place to go. Chains don't usually have this good a beer selection. Chimay (all 3), some Lambics, Bell's, Great Lakes and occasionally some Founder's. The bottled beers are in lit cases at the end of the bar and they don't mind you getting your own. The taps are OK but not great, Smithwicks, Pyramid Broken Rake, and usually Blue Moon. Most of the food is good and the burgers are great. The prices are reasonable, more money to spend on good beer. I find it better to go in the "off peak" times, it's more enjoyable that way. It's harder to get a table Friday and Saturday nights due to lack of seating.

Reminds me a little of "Cheers"

Made it to Tank's at about noon on St Patty's Day this year, just in time for the NCAA basketball on the tube. It's not a big place but there were a few spare tables and the service was quick and friendly. The menus say that tank's has been around since 1987 but the decor and general wear and tear make it look as if that could be 1957. I ordered a Guinness (natch) and corned beef sandwich, which is good enough to order year round in my opinion. The selection was not amazing, until one realizes how hard it can be to get decent beers at Dayton bars. Chimay, Bell's, Pyramid, several different Great Lakes and Sam Smith's were among the headliners for me and I had a GL Conway's Irish on draft for my second and was pretty impressed. The chli with cheese and onions is also a strong call. Overall, a definite winner in the UD area.

This bar's been here forever, but I'm not sure when this incarnation started. I learned about it whislt imbibing at Boston's after I commented that Boston's was the only place with a decent selection of good beers in Dayton. "Au contrare," came the retort, "there's a place on Wayne Avenue that has a good selection. A place called Tank's."

The following week at Boston's I learned that Tank's also has awesome burgers. So it was off to Tank's for dinner.

The beer selection is quite good for Dayton with a double glass-front cooler loaded with import and domestic bottles and 3/4 of a dozen taps featuring the likes of GLBC, Stone, Harpoon, BarrelHouse, et al. The real attraction though is the oversized burgers delivered with a huge mound of French Fies. Truly awesome eats to comliment the beers with decent service for this bustling establishment. You'll be lucky to find a seat most nights.

Tank's is a small corner bar a few blocks from the UD campus. It seems like what a sports bar would have been 20 or 30 years ago. Small wooden tables, smoky atmosphere, several televisions tuned into sports, you get the picture. They have a pretty decent selection of beers on tap. I have found GLBC Burning River, Harpoon IPA, Barrellhouse Vandemeer, and Arrogant Bastard to name a few. Good selection of bottles, with many different styles to choose from. Service has been very inconsistant in my experience. I have been there and received good service (my recent trip), and been there to experience horrible service. Hopefully, no one else has this experience. Food is pretty standard burgers, wings, other typical bar food. Try the chili! Overall, not a bad place to have a couple quality beers.
