Discovered this brew at the balcony bar of the Avenue Pub in New Orleans. A fabulous beer and a great old neighborhood bar in the most fascinating city in America.

A - black with a huge head, a nitro effect?
S - like night-blooming jasmine with hints of mirlitons
T - heavenly sweetish chocolate and toasty malt
M - smooth but highly carbonated
D - great, beer doesn't any better

Serving type: nitro-tap

a: dark black with a two finger off white solid head. kind of looks like a less-thin motor oil

s: roasted malts and bakers chocolate. toffee and roasted coffee beans. smells simple yet pleasant

t: follows the nose almost exactly. roasted and toasted malts, bittersweet chocolate, oak, some generic berries, a little bitterness from the roasted malt and a very subtle smokiness

m: typical Irish dry stout - light mouthfeel with small amount of carbonation and a little watery. its good

o: my first Moylan's beer, wasn't sure what to expect. for the style, this is good. easy to drink and has real nice roasted qualities. worth trying, just don't pay too much for it

Wow! First awesome aspect--connection to history. "This award-winning stout is brewed in the Irish tradition to commemorate General Stephen Moylan, Irish-born commander of the 4th Continental Dragoons during the American Revolutionary War."

Secondly, it feels as light as water on a summer day!

Third, the flavor is an explosion on the tongue, I'll read other reviews to identify it because I can't describe it other than fun, sweet, spunky, and awake!

Mmmm.

Bottle: a big, solid 650mL brown bottle, old-school label.

Appearance: pours an incredibly dark chestnut brown tending toward black. Looks quite thin, but with a properly solid creamy one-finger head. Plenty of lacing too.

Aroma: mostly roasted coffee malts with cocoa chocolate, some burnt grains and caramels.

Taste: follows the nose - strong roast coffee and chocolate up front with a touch of caramel and some spices behind.

Aftertaste: some hop and grain bitterness comes through on the finish, metering out the roast malts.

Mouth feel: a moderate body with a smooth feel. Enough carbonation to bring the flavours to the fore. Quite nice.

Overall: quite a decent dry stout, plenty of roast coffee and chocolate.. At around AU$12 a bottle (an equivalent case of 24 x 330mL being around $130) this is cheaper than other top-end brews from Moylan's, Heretic etc, but it is also not the best top-end beer I have ever had.
