Poured this bad boy from a bomber into a my arrogant bastard pint glass. Solid amount of creamy off white head, dissipates down pretty quickly but leaves a thin layer at the top that sticks around.
Right off the bat just by looking at it you can tell this thing is a monster IPA. It's as hazy as they come, I mean this thing is not even just the typical orange color of an ipa, it's tending towards a reddish brown.
On the nose this has two well blended smells intertwining in my head, a piney bitter hop smell, and a fruity citrus, not sweet though, the more acidic kind. Gauging by the smell the first thought it brings to me is that it's pretty much ready to explode some real live hops out of it when I actually taste...
...And the taste delivers in full, I was not let down an ounce, and in truth I haven't had an IPA this good in quite some time. When I thought explosion of hops in my mouth from the smell...well quite literally the flavoring in this beer is more dense than the core of the earth! The actual flavors don't disappoint either, citrus is there although a bit more mild than in the head, I get BITTER hops all over the place and an aftertaste consisting of straight up woody pine.
Mouthfeel isn't anything to brag about to be honest, but it's got sufficient malt to smooth it out and bring the flavors of the beer to the forefront of the palate. Ipa's aren't huge on the mouthfeel in my book anyhow so it's not something I really look for.
But drinkability...Hell Yes its got that for sure, why do you think I'm getting more and more ecstatic as this review goes on?
Bottom line, I love big hop west coast ipa's and this is one fits the bill extremely well. I would throw it in to a category containing both the stone ruination and the bear republic racer 5. It's got the look of the racer, and solid drinkability of it as well, and then the hop punch in the face of the ruination in the background always there ready to give you some more. I love it for sure, definitely recommend it to anyone who loves IPA's!
