22 oz bottle into an imperial pint glass; served cold and allowed to warm as I tasted it.
A - Dark copper, a bit cloudy (it's unfilitered) with a persistent lacing that hangs around for a bit
S - Hops, with a bit of grape hard candy (really!), maltiness, and (as it warms) a bit of alcohol (8.5% will do that!)
T - Interesting, not as hoppy as you'd expected, particularly at the front. I do get a bit of that "grape candy" in the taste as well, up front, along with some sweetness. Then the hops come in, hot and heavy. They never really *assert* themselves, but (to me) stay in the background, though they are a strong presence. There is a pervasive sweetness here (again, 8.5%) that gives the Heisman to the hops, at least more than you'd expect for a Double IPA. That makes this beer *very* drinkable, kinda scary, given that 8.5% I keep mentioning. The hoppy dryness does hang around for quite a while after a sip.
M - Almost syrupy; this feels "thick", at least partially due to the unfilteredness. The carbonation is also kept at a minimum and which keeps it agreeable. Hops dry the tongue out at the end.
D - Again, surprisingly so, for a heavy beer such as this one.
Should make clear that I'm an unabashed hophead, so others may disagree with the following.... This is a good beer, but would prefer the hops assert themselves a bit more, particularly in the front. That is an amazing thing to write, given that, according to Moylan's, this is a 90 IBU beer. They certainly hang around for a while at the end, but at the beginning it almost has the feel of a malty, alcohol-y Scotch ale, again until the hops finish things off.... Certainly an interesting, complex beer. Looking forward to trying the Hopsickle Triple IPA next....
