Been too long since I tried a new IIPA...
A: Good color here, dark amber and clear. Big two finger tannish-white head with lots of pitting and pretty good retention. The pour is bubbly but past that the beer does not appear overly carbonated.
S: Sticky citrus hops dominate the nose. I get some flowery and resiny hops in there as well. Underneath it all is a bit of heat from the malt, smells like this has a nice sweet balance to it.
T: Good malt backbone, not overly sweet, but enough to give a good balance. The hops come out quickly and while there is a hint of citrus, it's mostly resin, grass and pine. This is a very hoppy beer, but somehow the bready malt seems to mellow it out without really being that noticeable in the flavor.
MF: Very smooth and syrupy beer. The hops give it a good acidic feel, but not nearly as corrosive as Hopsicle. Tons of warming and the alcohol, though not big in number, is big in the feel.
D: Glad to know Moylan's can make an IPA that doesn't destroy your taste buds for the next month. I prefer a bit more sweetness out front, but this does a really nice job of balancing the hops out just enough without really putting any sweetness in the flavor. Lets you concentrate on the bitterness, I guess. Not a sessionable beer for sure. I guess I would say this is just a good solid IIPA...not to the level of Pliny, Racer X or the other great West Coast brews, but goes down easy and is different enough from so many others in the style that I will definitely go out of my way to drink it once in a while.
