Poured from 22oz bottle.

A- Pours a super darker brown color almost black. One finger drak brown head shows good retention and leaves ringy lacing with some webbing lace on the sides of my glass.

S- This beer I was afraid of might just be infected. There is some light chocoalte notes pairing off with some roasted malts. The biggest part of the aroma is a strong lactic aroma which is very off putting...it smells like sour milk.

T- One taste of this and I can tell it's infected. The lactic acid in the beer is horrible. All you can taste is soured milk with hints of roasted malts. Not good at all.

M- Mouthfeel is medium. Carbonation was alright for the beer. The sour milk flavor stuck on the palate and long into the aftertaste. The flavor was off (of course) and the rest of the beer followed suit. Medium drying on the palate but maybe not all from the alcohol itself.

D- This beer was a couple sips and then drain poured. Will review when I get another bottle.

I am going to leave this post up, but I believe my bottle was infected or spoiled or mishandled and am curious to see how many others run into this situation.

A - Pours dark brown with ruby highlights into my pint glass. Nice two fingers of tan head, good retention and some lacing.

S - Roasted malts, bitter sweet cocoa, spoiled cream and subtle espresso notes.

T - Mostly just bitter and milky(kind of spoiled and astringent), roasted malts, cocoa and coffee come out a little as it washes off the palate.

M - Medium body, good carbonation.

D - This was not a good one for me. Maybe my bottle is bad or something. I just don't get this beer nor do I really enjoy drinking it.

A: Pours a dark ruby/brown color. A large beige head rises to over two fingers. The rocky foam recedes to a ring, and leaves some spotty lace behind.
S: Burnt toast and acidic coffee up front. Week hops linger with an odd mineral and metallic aroma.
T: Thin, pale malts with a bitter and acidic coffee flavor. I get a big mineral flavor as well. Not good.
M/D: A medium body, but very thin and watery. The acidic and bitter coffee makes this a chore to drink. I will not be finishing the bomber.

Nothing comes together well at all here. Acidic coffee all over the place. On top of that a thin and week beer. Not something I would recommend.

A - minor touch of light through the center of glass. Tight off-white head that falls quickly.

S - smells off. Some malt and chocolate but no coffee. Instead, there is a strong wet bar-rag smell.

T - bitter chocolate, malts and a touch of coffee. Luckily the wet-rag bit did not translate to the flavor.

M - medium coating with a tingle over entire tongue.

D - maybe one as the scent is quite off putting.

Appearance: Pours a fudge brown color with a modest head that leaves a fair amount of splashy lace behind

Smell: Chocolate, caramel, brown sugar and marshmallow

Taste: Chocolate marshmallow, up front, with a charred tone that develops in the middle; almost a band-aid character that builds into the finish

Mouthfeel: Watery, with moderate carbonation

Overall: Perhaps this was an old bottle (I just bought it yesterday) but it really was not good

On tap at ChurchKey DC. Dense aroma of burned ropes and hemp, raw mushrooms and vinyl. I had this on cask so it was practically room-temperature warm which may have been even too warm for this beer. The aroma was the best part of this one; the taste didn't stand a chance. Compared to the aroma it was d-u-l-l, unless you like mushrooms. Maybe pour this over pizza next time? Not bad; not great, either.

Source/Serving: Draft/CO2 (N2 option also available)

Smell: Strong coffee, quite oaky/woody, and some chocolate. Quite pleasant but not too complex.

Taste: Smooth and roasty. Sweetness is nicely held in check by bitterness - very well balanced. Mostly coffee with some syrup and very nice burnt tobacco flavor. Very viscous mouthfeel. Finish is a touch dry with coffee bean bitterness and wood.

Appearance - This is a nice medium-brown in color with a good, light brown head that rose slowly out of the bottle when I popped the cap and left a seemingly permanent ring on top of the liquid.

Smell - You really have to let this one warm to build the aroma, but once there you'll be rewarded with some raw espresso bean, a hint of vanilla, a nice cocoa smell, and a decent amount of raw sugar.

Taste - The beer kind of changed its tune at the taste. I was able to get some light chocolate notes and a bit of roasted grain but the wonderful espresso from the nose was AWOL and there was an insidious citrus flavor that hit me the wrong way.

Mouthfeel - This is barely medium-bodied with some light but unpleasant carbonation but a short dryness at the end that I somewhat enjoyed.

Drinkability - This one started off well but couldn't hold up. Generally I'm a fan of this brewery but they have thrown in a few stinkers over the years and I guess this is somewhere in between the solid gold hits and the disappointments.

A: Very dark brown in color with a finger-thick cream colored head. Retention and lacing are decent.

S: Not much on the nose. Roasty, with some mocha and coffee. Hops are present in the backround, but very faint.

T: Roasty bitterness is most dominant, with hints of espresso and chocolate. There is some dark fruit character as well. Hops dry out the finish, but don't really add any flavor components.

M: A full bodied porter, this beer is rather silky and smooth. Alcohol is almost unnoticeable.

D: This beer was pretty average. It's worth trying, but I was slightly upset, being that I have always enjoyed the other beers from Moylan's. Better luck next time.

Pours very dark brown, cola highlights with a slight off white head.

Aroma is smokey dark drain and hints of coffee up front, with a charred bitterness underneath.

Taste is exactly what the nose described. Smokey, with mild coffee bitterness and sweet chocolate notes.

Mouthfeel medium bodied.

Overall a drinkable, if uninspiring mild porter. A good session brew.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is chocolate with some roasted malt and astringency. The flavor is roasted malt with some bitter chocolate. There are also some earthy hops. The mouthfeel is a little too thin and watery. Medium carbonation. A decent porter, but nothing more.

Poured a nice dark black with some light mahogany highlights and a bit of light tan head.

The smell is light with a bit chocolate and roasted barley.

The flavor is very mild, a light bit of chocolate and a light green fresh hop with a bit of pine balance well, but overall a bit to tame.

The mouthfeel is a bit thin and very light.

I could see this being very sessionable with its light balanced profile, but lacks the amount of flavor I look for in a good porter most of the time.

Pours an opaque, dark brown with a 2-finger khaki head with moderate lacing.

The scent is coffee with some chocolate and bready malts. The flavor is roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and charred malts. Mouthfeel is medium to full-bodied that's rather carbonate and there's a somewhat dry finish.

This is a drinkable porter. It doesn't stand out from others, but it is still solid for the style.

22 ounce bottle - $5.55 at Ale Yeah! in Decatur, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body (straight up black if in a poorly lit area) with a finger's worth of buff-hued head that recedes fairly quickly.

Smell: Darkly toasted bread, espresso powder, and a good portion of cocoa. Hint of activated charcoal and dark fruits as well.

Taste: Malty tastes of roasty-toned coffee and bittersweet chocolate morsels binded with unsweetened chocolate and a touch of fire-charred bread crust and powderized licorice. Low level of sweetness. A bit of tannic prune skin. Earthy undertones. Moderately bitter. Chalky, minerally quality to it. Lightly acidic. Roasty, mineral-hinted finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: Not bad. A smooth, relatively engaging robust porter.

22oz bottle $5, 5%ABV. Dark, dark brown, almost black. Smells a little roasty, nothing special. The flavor is actually not half-bad, some coffee, some roast, good stuff and extremely easy to drink. I think I finished the bottle in less than an hour....

22 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a nice 1-2 finger light tan head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty glass lacing, with plenty of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, light coffee, roasted malt, toast, nuttiness, and light herbal hops. Nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of chocolate, caramel coffee, roasted malt, toast, nuttiness, and herbal spiciness. Light herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, and herbal hops on the finish for a short bit. Fairly dry on the finish. Nice balance of flavors; but a touch on the watery side and not as robust as some porters I have had in the past. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy mouthfeel. Very smooth to drink; with no alcohol presence at all as expected for 5%. Overall this is a nice, enjoyable, and very drinkable porter.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours black with a light white head, solid retention.

S: Dark chocolate, with a hint of sweetness, charcoal.

T: Classic porter. Dark chocolate with a note of dark fruit. Hint of mocha.

M: Creamy, smooth, light/medium bodied for me.

D: A solid porter, nothing great, but better than a lot of the stuff that's out there.

Pours dark brown with a large fading head.
Nose shows roasted malt, dark chocolate and big nutty notes. Also a faint savoury character. Pretty restrained.
Flavours are more on the hoppy side, with prominent piny notes accompanying bold roasted malt and coffee. Pretty flavoursome.
Could use a bit more carbonation.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Thin tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate and coffee. Taste begins with an earthy, smokey flavor, followed by some sweetness, and finishing with an herbal, chocolaty finish. Mouthfeel is a bit light. Overall a good porter, the smoke is nice, but there are better examples out there.

about what i would expect for an "American-Irish Style Porter" whatever that means. it pours a murky brown that is almost black with a khaki head that raises to two fingers in height, sticks around at one finger, yet leaves disappointing lacing.

lots of chocolate in the aroma, with some coffee, maybe espresso, vanilla, toffee, molasses.

a bit metallic, but chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts are there as well. a slight bit of charred malts. a surprising onslaught of hops comes at the finish and it doesn't quite mesh too well. not very strong flavored and with a bit of off-flavors, but decent flavors are there as well.

creamy almost medium bodied brew with subtle carbonation that leaves a velvety feel.

overall, its pretty good, and I'd drink it again, but there are many other porters I'd drink before this one.

This was dark brown but still translucent to see through, similar to root beer.
Smelled like a sweet balsamic vinegar. Vanilla-ish. Had a slight wood chip smell.

Taste was similar. It had a balsamic vinegar taste except without the acidity. A little thin towards the end. Had a vanilla taste mixed with coffee beans. I tasted the bitter sweet chocolate in the aftertaste every now and again.

It's not bad. A decent American take on the style. It comes on thin at cold temps but comes alive at warmer temps. Turns into a sipping porter. It was something different.

22oz bomber with no date. found a dusty bottle on sale for only $2.99. here's hoping it's not skunked out or infected.

i got lucky: not infected, not skunky. beautiful black look with great tan head and retention. smell is lactose sugar and not much more. taste is milky and sweet, with roasted coffee grounds and chocolate. lighter than a stout, but still flavorful.

22 oz. bottle tried 11 Oct 2010. Served in the 0.5 L Adambrau becker.

Large brown head, well carbonated. Nearly opaque very dark brown in color. Relatively light aroma, roasty coffee astringency, a touch of cocoa. Lots of coffee and dark roastiness. Light velvety body and mouthfeel. Moderate ethanol. Becomes chocolatey though the middle and finish with a bit of roastiness in the aftertaste.

Nicely done but not too strong or bold in flavor.

Moylan's Chelsea Porter
On draft at the Avenue Pub, New Orleans, LA

Appearance: dark brown, small head, and some good lacing.

Smell: hops and coffee maltiness.

Taste: hops, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and slight coffee.

Mouthfeel: medium.

It is a flavorful porter, but a tad on the weaker side. The flavors are well balanced. You could use it as a session brew.
