12 fl oz brown glass bottle acquired at an Austin, TX corner mart as part of a 6 pack for $2.99 (seriously). 105 calories. Cap is silver, (purportedly) twist-off, and unbranded. Reviewed from notes taken in a hotel room. Truncated bottle review:

Aroma: Bottom-shelf bourbon. Skunky malted barley. Corn adjunct. Cereals and grains dominate. Apple cider. Medicinal syrupy notes. Malt extract. Cheap grain liquor.

An off-putting aroma of average strength. I'm wary of the first sip.
No yeast, alcohol, or hops are detectable.

Taste: Poor. Matches the aroma - cheap grain liquor and all. Corn adjunct, dominating cereals and grains, low quality stale barley, cheap malt extract, faint medicinal notes. I'm not liking this at all.

Terrible depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour. Poorly built. There's little balance here at all.

Mf: Smooth and wet in a generic fashion. Overcarbonated. Poor presence on the palate. Medium-bodied; it should be light. Unrefreshing. Stale. Too thick for the style.
Not oily, astringent, harsh, or boozy.

Dr: At the budget beer price point, you'd do better with something like Frio or Trader Joe's' beers. I won't be getting this again and I'd discourage friends from purchasing it. In fairness, it's better from a glass than it is from the bottle, and it does a decent job at hiding its alcohol, but the off-putting aromatics and flavours make it difficult to get through. I will say it isn't watery - which is more than I can say about many bad beers in this style.

Stoney's Light identifies itself as "The Light Alternative." "Alternative to what?" we ought to ask ourselves. To standard American macro-brewed lagers? To "heavy" beers that have high ABVs, more carbohydrates, and higher caloric contents? Or to other light lagers, which are notorious for sacrificing flavor in order to offer a brew with slightly fewer calories?

The only thing "alternative" about the beer's appearance is that unlike most light lagers it offers no head. Even a vigorous pour fails to produce any foam to speak of.

But then there's the nose. I'm interested. There is no hoppy aroma to speak of, but the smell of honey is distinct.

The beer is moderately carbonated, just like most light beers.

The flavor of orange blossom or clover honey lingers on the palate. There is not much complexity or depth, and half way through the bottle I am asking myself if the nectarous aroma and flavor is unique enough to keep me interested. The hops are overpowered by the honey malt; this lack of balance flattens out the flavor in some measure.

The bottle tells us to expect a "light, refreshing" beer, and to some extent this is what it delivers. It is refreshing, but not because it is crisp and somewhat watery, as most light lagers are. It is light in terms of body, but because of its lingering sweetness its lightness is different from that of other light lagers.

Stoney's Light offers an alternative to the kinds of crisp, mildly hoppy, somewhat watery light lagers that we have come to expect. You might drink one on a hot summer afternoon; but, as an alternative to this standard way of appreciating light lagers, you might also try pairing one with an antipasto plate of cheeses, olives, peppercorn crackers, and dried meats.

Stoney's Light Beer
Jones Brewing Company
Style: Light Lager
ABV: 4.30 %

LOOK: Pale straw yellow, fair clarity. A few inches of fizzy head form and crackle away.

SMELL: Clean aroma of grains, corn, and a faint grassy hop. Smells like a generic beer.

TASTE: Fizzy sting of carbonation gives way to a pretty reasonable malt flavor, a flash of husk, hop and corn bread. Not overly sweet more or less even, a bit rough around the edges but does contain less caloric content than the major competitors, I suppose a redeeming quality to some.

FEEL: High level of carbonation, light, watery, not super crisp, ok.

OVERALL: A simple, basic light lager. Nothing to see here.

Ah, the joys of The CANQuest (TM)! I was so naive when I began this madness, thinking that if I could find 100 CANned beers, I would be doing well. I am now on the approach to # 700 with no end in sight. It has represented an opportunity for me to sample beers from AALs to RISs and everything in between. My renown is now such that breweries WANT me to sample their CANned wares and so it was at the recent Pints for Pets Fest in Altoona where I came away with a number of new CANs to sample. Many thanks to the Stoney's/Flat Rock Beer Representative for laying this on me.

The CAN is totally redesigned, losing the crown and going for a sleek striped sliver look. From the CAN: "A Light Refreshing Premium Beer."; "The Light Alternative".

The Crack & Glug came off without a hitch and I had just over a finger of foamy, bone-white head that was not long for this world in the face of today's increasing humidity. Color was a pale lemon-yellow with NE-quality clarity and once again, I thumb my nose at Greg Koch and his increasingly intolerant take on "fizzy yellow beers". Nose gave the misnomer to "Light Lager" as it should include "Adjunct", given the smell of silage and especially corn. Mouthfeel was thin with a light flavor of lager sweetness adulterated by corn in the mouth. Finish was semi-dry and definitely refreshing, especially on this humid day. I did not mind it, but it was kind of like another day at the office beer for me. The other CANsideration is that Stoney's nearly went defunct while down in Smithton and relocated to Latrobe, so for yinz light beer drinkers - Are you going to support a local or go with a corporate BMC light beer? You know my answer.

On the label: "The Light Alternative."

A fizzy, golden-yellow appearance with a head that leaves quick. Lots of carbonation bubbles rising to the top. Scattered spots up top with a thin, soapy rim. 3/5

Smells as expected. Grainy, grassy, vegetal, herbal. On the positive side, there's a semi-sweet undertone to the aroma. 2.5/5

Taste-wise, Stoney's Light is grainy up front like its fuller-bodied big brother (Stoney's Premium). Honestly, it's not bad at all. A bit dry in the aftertaste, with a seltzer like flavor. Thin bodied, barely hopped, but not exactly character free. 2.5/5

Feels a little watery and could use a touch more bittering hops, but I probably could have drank this at a colder temperature, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Not bad. 3/5

Overall 2.5/5

Notes: a definite "drink ice cold" kind of brew. My best friend swears by it, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been that interested in trying it out.

Poured a nice golden color from a can. Head dissipates fairly quickly. This beer smells like corn. Taste is fairly average, not bad for a light beer overall. Dominant taste is the corn. Carbonation is moderate. Nothing overwhelms you, but not much of anything I suppose. Overall, not a bad light beer. Its a light beer but for a light beer probably above average.

Appearance: Pours a pale golden light hue with a bright white ultra carbonated foamy quickly disappearing head leaves minimal lacing. Aroma: Mild sweet notes of slight toasted malted barley with corn and husky varieties of malts once brewed independently now contracted by Pittsburgh Brewing Co. Still one of the very many better light beers when compared to other Bud, MIller, Coors counterparts when looking for one or two more easy drinking beers turn to a Stoney's. Taste: Clean flavor a bit of adjunct corn and rice with mild sweetness from a low amount of malted barley yields a mediocre flavor of good ol' drinking beer. Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated mostly an unnatural feel of carbonation and light body adds to the charm and mediocrity of this beer. Drinkability: Low on the spectrum of better beers, high on the spectrum of light adjunct lagers.
