04/24/13 On cask, (a vehicle I have mixed feelings about). A real treat. Nice coffee notes. The 6.7 ABV puts in the upper middle range of stouts and it all works very well for a truly affable and quaffable mix. I'll be looking for more from River Horse in the future.

32 oz growler poured into a shaker pint.
Black with 3 fingers of tan head with decent retention.
Coffee & cream, roasted barley, dark fruit, and semi-sweet chocolate.
Medium roast coffee & cream and roasted barley. Notes of semi-sweet chocolate and raisin. Lingering notes of roast and dusted cocoa.
Medium bodied, silky, and smooth.
Decent Oatmeal-Milk Stout with well integrated coffee notes and lactose.

This is a one-off where River Horse took their Oatmeal Milk Stout and added coffee. The Milk Stout was a bit sweet, but had some good roast character that mostly balanced it.
But... add a bit of coffee, especially the bitterness, and the beer rounds out nicely. While I'm going to review from the growler pour into a tulip, I did have some direct from the tap into a small plastic taster while I was filling the growler 2 hours ago.. Also, I have a good lid for the growler...
A - Dark pour, no light through the body, although at the very tip of the tulip, there's a bit of red. The head was about 3/4" at a mid-brown. Great look. It settled pretty quickly to a bit of lacing around the glass.
S - Dominant roasted malt character, not a lot of coffee.
T - Opens with a blend of semi-sweet and roast malt paired with roasted coffee beans. There isn't much bitterness, there is a hint of earthiness present, as and heads into astringency on the finish.
M - Medium bodied with a silky yet somewhat thin texture, yet it still maintains a creaminess that is pleasant. Carbonation is modest. Finishes with mild nutty astringency and a little bitterness on the palate.
D - I liked this more and more with each passing sip. The coffee character works really well with the milk and oatmeal smoothness, it's quite pleasing.
