Look: A dark amber, more brown than orange, like a rich caramel. Slightly hazy, yet clear enough to see the carbonation rising to meet a light beige head which starts out strong, but is quick to fizzle out. Neither the haziness, nor the low head are atypical for the style and alcohol content (8% ABV).

Smell: Malt is the surprising focus here--for a Belgian-style beer, I was expecting more fruit and spice. The malt bill is nice and complex, with toasted mixed nuts at the forefront. But Belgian yeast remains unmistakable with that strange, banana liqueur smell. A talented chorus line of dark stone fruit dances in the background; Plums, dates, and figs are suppressed, but hardly silent.

Taste: The malt and yeast combination creates a roasty, candied nut assortment. A drizzle of sweet molasses and the same dark fruit found in the aroma are tamed by the toasted grain, yet remain marked enough to put forth some residual sugar which lasts from beginning to finish.

Mouthfeel: A good level of dryness and carbonation for the style work together to further balance the sweetness and heighten the pleasant alcoholic "zing" found in strong Belgian ales. However, there also exists a delicate smoothness which makes the beer feel more sessionable.

Overall: Like a cross between a solid, yet not quite remarkable Northern Brown Ale and a Dubbel of the same caliber. Deceptive sessionability and a good price make this beer marketable, but at the same time, it lacks the complexity of other Belgian ales.
