Discount Drinks is definitely the best place to go in the Downriver region for all sorts of alcohol (though this isn't saying too much). Their beer selection is pretty good, but if you are looking for rarer stuff you are probably out of luck.

My main issues with this place are that the service is often poor (or even nonexistent,) and their beers are often expired, perhaps even improperly stored. Sometimes the workers are extremely helpful and courteous, and offer some special/limited stock to me when they notice I'm not the average Joe walking in for a case of Bud, but other times they are disinterested. Some act like your typical grocery or party store employee. And I've spotted (and even purchased) several beers that were a couple years past their expiration date. One in particular still should have been good due to the style/high ABV, but tasted pretty raunchy to me (although I'm no expert).

My suggestion is to go here if it is convenient, but drive the extra 20 minutes or so to Merchants in Dearborn if you have the time. The prices of the two places are comparable (Merchants might be slightly higher), but Merchants has a much larger selection. While Discount Drinks has a good bomber/individual bottle imported selection, Merchants has more, and often in 4 or 6 pack varieties and a much larger selection of Michigan/domestic singles too. Additionally, Merchants has a female cicerone who is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Discount Drinks is a very large warehouse type store. I tended to go there when I need a large amount of alcohol, like for a wedding, graduation party, or huge 4th of July Party. Prices are good, variety is great, but they never seem to get enough special stuff that I can grab any. Maybe they hide that somewhere I can't find it. When I go in alone I have never been asked if I need help. For some reason my husband always gets asked, so this seems to vary. What prompted me to get off my butt and type out a review was the surly attitude I got from the cashier last time I was in. I asked a question and was treated like I was both dumb and interrupting her. I thought she was a cashier and her job was to be courteous and take my money, but she clearly thought it was to give me a hard time. Since there is a beer store 5 minites away that is always friendly, I won't be shopping there anymore.

What a great beer store! Great selection and very helpful staff. The last time I was there, I was offered samples of new beer I was looking at. Awesome. I love thd place, the staff and the selection (Plus it's near by.).
It seems like every time I go there, they have something new. There are whole isles devoted to MI beer, German beer, Belgium beer, etc.
Any time I've called, they have been knowledgable about what they have in stock and when they plan on getting their next shipment.
I was also pleased by my odd reccomendation of liquor (best bang for your buck vodka without advertising-Pearl vodka).

Discount Drinks is a great beer store, especially for Downriver. I'd say they are the best in the area, and their prices are usually really good, too.
The atmosphere in the store is nothing special. More like a drink warehouse, with inadequate lighting a couple of rows of beer. Lots of good foreign stuff and a pretty good bomber selection. Lot's of great local stuff, too. They usually get the harder to find releases, and just like most stores, they sell out fast. I think they got 1 or 2 cases of KBS this year and had a waiting list started months in advance.(1 bottle limit).
The staff doesn't seem to be really knowledgeable, although there is one guy that seems to know his stuff. (Dave maybe?)

Overall, if you're looking for a good price sixer or 12 pack or a harder to find local beer, Discount Drinks is your place.

this place has a pretty good selection for being in the downriver area (meaning picture a place nothing but bud or bud light people who are so far from being ahead of the curve and future maury show/ springer show candidates.not all but majority.) merchant's fine wine in dearborn to me is the best place so far in michigan i've been to but if you don't want the drive discount drinks is a good place to go. their selection on 22oz's are amazing and the prices aren't to bad. i haven't seen to many places carrying a nice selection of rogue but they do. the only negative thing i could say about the joint is that i wish they had more micro brews in the cooler so you don't have to take em home and wait to start drinking. also the service is alil rocky. i've been there numerous times and some times i ask on some beers and i get no help at all. to end it on a positive note they have a nice selection on wine and liquor also. it's worth checking out for sure.

What a surprise this place was. Many many more beers than I expected to find. There were 100+ Belgian beers, around 40+ German beers, about 30 Michigan craft beers, a good 100+ other USA craft beers, and an odd assortment of eastern European beers (4 from Okocim alone). The prices were mostly reasonable, in some cases wickedly underpriced (I got Ommegang Bier de Mars for $6.99). The coolers are filled with macros and a precious few microbrews, everything else is available on shelves. An easy choice when downriver.
