Well, let's see what the 434's installment of WholePaycheck has to offer in the way of beer...

Y'know, they have a pretty wide range of stuff. Lots of locals (Starr Hill, Blue Mountain, Legend, etc.), a fair amount of Belgian and German offerings and a nice complement of national craft names. A decent selection of Bell's (hey listen, as long as you have Two Hearted and the current release I'm pretty well good to go). Not a lot of garbage in there, either.

Service? C'mon, it's a grocery store. They're moving product...whatever that may be.

Selection as mentioned above has a decent range. Maybe more breadth than depth, but it's nice to be able to grab a 6 on the way home when shopping for groceries (Commonwealth of Massholes...are you listening?).

Prices are in line with local norms. Good stop.

Hit this place up for supplies on the Friday night while in town for the Penn State Virginia football game. Above average selection for a Whole Foods; I found it slightly better than the two stores I am familiar with around here. Having a growler station with a friendly operator is a nice touch.

Selection was decent but not overwhelming. Plenty of local Virginia brewers I was unfamiliar with, including Starr Hill, Legend, Devils Backbone, and several others I can't remember. I thought prices were generally pretty reasonable.

One nice touch is that the old baseline hardwood from the UVA basketball coliseum is randomly found in one of the middle aisles. Just thought it was quirky cool.

Six taps to pour freshly brewed local to localish beers at a bar located amidst the fantastic cheese section. Nice hightop tables with a single bartender pouring pints and filling growlers on the cheap. Nice selection of mix a six and a nice frequently rotating selection of 22s. Whole Foods' beer buyer is knowledgable and helpful and interested in getting the best newest options available in the area. He seems to do ALOT with a limited amount of space. Can't beat the hot and cold bars along with the salad and soup bars, bot to mention deli sandwiches, sushi, and a woodfired oven. While this is not a bar, it is a great pint for a pint or three!

What can I say? It's a Whole Foods. Which means, while the beer selection is pretty decent, the cheese selection is probably a bit better. There's a decent selection of locals as well as some okay 750s (and some of the bigger names in craft beer in terms of national distribution), but nothing that jumped out at me that I HAD to buy. Definitely a decent selection, but probably not too much consistently special here. The staff is very helpful, but don't necessarily know a whole lot about beer specifically. Price tag is...well, consistent with Whole Foods.

Located north of town across Hwy 29 from the mall. Same parking lot as Market Street Wineshop.

Typical WF set up. 2 coolers, one with mainly German/British selections and one with micros. Warm beer is now across the wine section, rather than next to the coolers. Several end caps featured beers that were not available in the beer section, so look around.

The selection here has *really* decreased over the years. The selection is still good, but not much reason to stop in if you are just looking for beer. Shop the specialty stores in town instead, but don't turn down a trip to WF.

Lagunitas 2009 and Hop Stoopid were good finds today, as was Hales Mongoose.

The beer selection has declined in recent years. Once it was pretty much the best in the area, but now it is down to one cold case of decent but unsurprising selections from the East and West Coasts, with a good lineup of Bells to represent the brewers in between. They used to have a good stock of 22 oz bottles, but they have deemphasized that considerably. Still, this is not a bad spot to pick up an interesting sixpack, provided you don't mind the steep price tag. The selection used to rotate fairly often, but in the last year it has been stuck in a rut, with the same selections from Victory, Sierra Nevada, Stone, and other larger craft brewers. They seemed to have developed more of an interest in "organic" beers lately. There's little on the shelves here that you can't find at Wine Warehouse or the old downtown Market Street Wine Shop.

Whole Foods has become the grocery store of choice for rotating seasonals in Charlottesville. They have recently( within the past year) revised their beer selection to include many more breweries that you may have a tough time finding anywhere else in Charlottesville. A few names I have seen rotate in and out include Stone, Dogfish, Smuttynose, Otter Creek, the two Deleriums, St Bernardus, Hofbrau, North Shore(including their organic offerings), and Geary's. While they may not stock all beers from certain breweries they more than make up for this in selection. Recently I have noticed the addition of Weyerbacher seasonal bombers and six packs from the Legacy Brewing Company added to their growing stock. They also stock a decent selection of 750 ml Belgians.

Most of the beer is kept cold in two coolers with a small amount of shelf space next to the coolers devoted to other offerings. The store does not have a wine chiller so anything bought warm will have to be taken home to chill.

The young lady who recently took over the wine and beer ording is very friendly and is always willing to talk beer.

This is fast becoming my go to grocery store for last minute purchases due to the unique selction and frequent suprises that pop up.

Scores are for the beer section only, besides who else here cares about how good the refined sifted organic tempura batter is right?

There are two beer coolers here, the long open kind you would normally get milk in. The selection is good but not as good as other Whole Foods I've been to. The belgian selection is slim to none. The microbrews are good though, your normal picks you would find at any beer store. Its an ok place to go if you are looking for hippie food and want to pick up some beer at the same time.
