I had this in the sampler at Beach Chalet.

Appearance- reddish color, thin head

Smell- malt mostly

Taste- malt mostly

Mouthfeel- medium bodied

Drinkability- I thought it was pretty good for a red ale. I don't usually drink them too much but it was good.

This is another beer from last year's notebook, misplaced, that I am only now entering here. I had it on tap at Beach Chalet. It's a fairly straightforward, but very enjoyable, drinkable beer with good character that goes well with food.

Dark copper, it has a small foamy ring, wisps.

Aroma is chocolaty prune maltiness, hints of wine and wood.

Taste is nice woody-earthy chocolate, toastiness, lightly sweet and light woody-earthy bitterness. Its well-rounded, with a firm character, bitterness and sweetness both hold up well and in good balance.

On tap at Beach Chalet on 7/14/09.

A - Clear deep reddish orange body with half a finger of off-white head that settled into a patchy film but left thick lacing around the glass.

S - Toasted and sweet malts dominate, with subtle a subtle floral hop character in the background. Lots of sweet toffee notes are present.

T - Rich caramel and toffee notes with a toasted grainy malt character and only a subtle floral hop bite in the finish.

M - Medium body with a syrupy texture and mild carbonation. Finishes sweet on the palate.

D - Typical malty red ale. I felt this could have used some more hops to balance out the sweet malty character.

Appearance> dark ruby read, lively, clear, creamy white head, good lacing, but no head retention.

Smell> Smells more like a dark belgian than an american red, which is fine by me. The aroma is toasty with hints of chocolate.

Taste> Strong, sweet, and smoky with a resiny finish.

Mouthfeel> lively but not too full. Smooth

Drinkability> Easy like Sunday morning, or Sunday afternoon, which is when I can be found drinking it.

Enjoyed this one at the Beach Chalet in San Francisco, watching the Pacific crash into the continental shelf. Excellent spot for a beer and a good memory.

Deep amber body and off-white head, that exhibited good retention and decent lacing. Mild malty aroma is hard to detect, and perhaps this beer's weakest point, as it performs well elsewhere. Nutty and malty flavour with a dose of caramel and some decent hopping, particularly in the finish. A touch floral and biscuity. Medium-light body and medium carbonation is par for the style.

Decent drinkability, but a little on the plain side for me to have another. Amp up the flavours and fix the aroma and I'm there.

A friend who had been up to SF for a few days, very kindly brought this cracking beer back as a Birthday Gift. How kind, it also turns out to be the best one I had this year. I was eager to try it, but was astounded to see that Riptide Red Ale from the Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant, San Francisco, appears to have only 1 other Beer Review - so let me add a second.
Comes in a 22 fl.oz ‘Bomber’ that has one of those plastic shrink wrapper type labels. Has Danger written below a Yellow/Black Diamond Warning Sign depicting a swimmer clearly in trouble.
It lives up to its name, and is indeed red, very red. A deep but honest mahogany red with ruby flashes when held to the light. Laces well, and the tan colored head is deep, controlled and even at first, but settles to a consistent 1/4” collar as it is drunk. Looks very appetizing and incredibly powerful, although I note the label states that this beer is only 5.6% ABV.
Aromas are equal in strength to the beers appearance. A fantastic hoppy nose that improves as the beer warms up. Malt and some caramel are also evident.
Tastes are enticing, immediately pronouncing a very quaffable beer that wants to quell your intrigue and slake your thirst. It does both equally well. Great balance. Good inherent carbonation leads to a solid mouthfeel and a lively feeling on the tongue adding to its already high drinkability quite nicely. Introduction is slightly malty with some sweetness, a toffee-apple middle, and a superb caramel finish which culminates in a hop bite and lingering bitterness that really kicks ass.

A Highly Impressive Red Beer.
I wonder when my friend is going back to SF?!?
