*nice gold in the glass with a pretty head that hung in there. pretty lacing

*mild nose, lightly floral

*a bit of bubble gum on the tongue, candy malts toward the end

*very easy to drink, conditioning is fine

*I like this item considering it's been in the garage for over a year. Brought back from Belgium by my daughter as a very thoughtful gift.

Pours a clear golden with ample, but not durable, head.

The aroma is light and fruity.
The flavor is unique, with more resemblance to a pils than expected.

M - a bit odd but certainly not objectionable; semi-dry.

O - not as complex, challenging or idiosyncratic as expected from a Belgian tripel.

My brother in law shared this beer with me. Slowly he is getting into beers, so keep on going and surprise me Maarten.

A - An clear amber colored beer with on top a off white head

S - Fruity and spicy along with some citrus and yeast.

T - Spicy tones go hand in hand with fresh fruits.

M - A high carbonation is a killer for this beer. In the end comes a medium bitterness.

O - What can I say; just another triple, nothing is really out of balance (except the carbonation though) here. After one glass you have had enough.

In that view it is strange that Brugge Tripel scores an B- (3.38), while Steenbrugge Tripel scores an B+ (3.83).

This beer is a real surprise to me.

L: The looks are great, like many other tripels.
S: But what is that smell? There's a great funky, earthy, brett/kriek-alike background smell that makes this tripel very, very interesting.
T: in line of the smell; ending with a nice accord; quite round, but not so round and sweet like Gouden Carolus or Tripel Karmeliet. Better!
M: good carbonation. perfect alcohol (8.7%).
O: can it compete with Westmalle Tripel. I think so!

From the 750 ml. corked bottle which soarded across the room when I popped it open. Sampled on January 2, 2011. The pour is a nice looking orange-yellow with about an inch if fluffy, white head that settles to a thin ring after a few moments. Poured into a wine glass so thew carbonation flows upward frorm the center like a funnel. Yeast and wheat greet the nose followed by herbs and ripe fruit. The full mouthfeel coats the tongue. The taste has a thin but sour hoppy ending with pleasing yeasts and malts in the mouth. I paid $6.99 for the bottle and it is cleayl competitive with some of its more expensive counterparts.

Oringinally Brugse Tripel brewed by De Gouden Boom (and now retired in BeerAdvocate), this one has been rebuilt and is now brewed by Palm, and is widely available in the touristy areas of northern Belgium (and perhaps other places too, but I haven't seen). Note that this beer has a number of reviews placed in the Brugse Tripel notation, but new reviews are not being accepted.

33 cl bottle, this was my last beer of my wife's and my recent trip to Belgium and the Netherlands. This one is basically an average tripel- not bad or terrible, just ok. An overly sweet rich malt base that is very lacking in the spciy herbal peppery complexity that makes a great tripel. Easily drinkable, almost more like a highly alcoholic Belgian pale ale than a tripel.

Bottle, Brown 33cl. Brewed on the old Gouden Boom site by Palm.

Best by 13 April 2008, drank 20 may 2008, a little behind the BBD.

Poured into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru stemmed tulip glass.

Good deep amber, dirty old gold colour with a full slighty off-white head. Very little sediment got into the glass, but what did could be clearly seen through the otherwise misty body of the beer.

Aroma of Toffee Apples and Candy Floss, was I at the fair?

The taste tells you this is serious stuff, the alcohol is there straight away. Is it dry, bitter and sweet at the same time? Maybe, it doesn't carry the Candy Floss into the taste, but toffee and cooking apples are in there.

The mouthfeel isn't right, it isn't watery, but it isn't rich, thick or creamy in any sence of those words either. A kind of alcoholic mix containing a headache making formula.

Not sure about this, I've had it in Brugge and liked it a lot more than I did during the tasting, if I have another under reviewing conditions and it is a different drink I'll re-do my review.

Pours a golden/orange color with a creamy, slightly off-white, head. Good head retention. Small carbonation seen rising. Good lacing.

Aroma of citrus, malt, spices and some sort of sweet/sour thing going on.

Tastes of alcohol, fermented fruit, somewhat medicinal. Rather simple and lacking flavor.

Mouthfeel has a medium body and is reasonably cleansing.

Overall, a pretty decent brew. Can't drink too many, but nice to sit around and drink. Lacking in character, but not offensive.

I had this while grilling chicken in the rain. It pours to a nice color, not much head, though. A nice golden color in the glass. A bit of honey in the taste, and the typical sweetness I find once you get past 8.0% ABV. It feels good in the mouth and is very drinkable.

33cl Bottle.

Very hazy deep orange amber with a huge lively orange-tinted head that shows fantastic retention. Aromas of vanilla yoghurt, spices, cherries. Sweet vanilla and toast flavours, spicy, cherry fruit. Peppery finish, mild bitterness. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, full-bodied.
I really liked this one.

330ml bottle bought from The Vineyard, Belfast...

Poured a hazy golden colour. Creamy head poured big and foamy with a meringue like topping which then faded to light wispy covering. Decent amount of carbonation bubbles drift to the surface.. very little lacing..

Aroma - Spicy Belgian yeastiness, strong slightly tropical fruits (pineapples, oranges, some strawberries, limes), peppery, some vanilla notes, freshly cut grass, marzipan, floral honey, sea salt notes...

Taste - Nice biscuity malts and Belgian yeast, good fruitiness (apples, oranges, some pears, light pineapples), good pepperiness, alcohol is just noticeable, honey / sugary sweetness, light anise, medicinal, fresh bread, some almond traces...

Feel - Pretty sharp and dry... light / medium bodied... dangerously drinkable...

Overall - A pretty good if fairly run of the mill Tripel... certainly worth a try though...

Oh boy did I love Brugge the city. Here is a beer named after it for a brewery that used to be ther I believe... brought back from Belgium so hopefully better than the US imported version.

Pours a ridiculous 3+ finger head that forces me to stop pouring about 2/3 of the way through, bubbly airy over carbonated head fades at a med pace wtih spotty lacing, over a very clear golden blond beer.

Nose brings Belgian golden malts, a sweet malt base with a touch of blond candy, a bit of light candi sugar as well. That's followed quickly by loads of esters, peppery spices, and a phenolic booze. Typical phenols, mild spices with a banana fruity esters, and hint of wheat I think, as well as a bit of orange peel.

taste starts again with the sweetness, sweet candy malt flavors, a Belgian blond malt with a touch of a caramely flavor, candi sugar is there, and touch of a syrupy white molasses like. Also bit of wheat and toasty flavors. Booze comes right through with more phenols, a slight chemical phenol and pure fusel alcohol flavors. Next is the esters, plenty more esters, a little peppery light spices, some fruity ester flavors, more banana, and a bit of orange peel with all that. There is a bitterness from the orange peel and some tannins from the esters I think that add a weird bitterness that is a bit unpleasant. The finish is dry but sticky, more almost anestesizing booze, sticky candi sugar, esters and phenolic booze lingering.

Mouth is med bodied, way too much carbonation and too much booze too for only 8.7%.

Overall not bad, just gets too boozy and overcarbonated and really gets a bit too much overall.

330ml bottle. sampled march 9/2010.

pours crystal clear pale orange with a small dense white head. the head drops fairly fast and leaves only a few spots of lace.

aroma is nice. caramel. bit of toffee. light yeasty spice. slightly floral. white bread. cracker. touch of biscuit. light citrus.

taste is ok. the caramel and toffee is a little stronger than i'd expect in a tripel, almost sticky sweet. white bread and a bit of cracker. light biscuit. light yeasty spice. bit of lager-y character too.

mouthfeel is nice. around medium body, too full for the style. nice fine medium carbonation level.

drinkability is nice. too sweet and full bodied for the style. this feels like an american attempt at the style - the malt profile is off, it's not nearly light and drinkable enough. the basic elements are there, just not put together quite right.

Shockingly, it looks like MarketBasket made a deal with the brewery/distributor and now it can be bought in London Derry MB for 10.99 under the name Steen Brugge. (Or maybe they just changed the name of the brand and now it's going to be called Steen Brugge everywhere, but it's the same beer). It's a big deal to find such a beer in NH in a grocery store.

It's a real Brugge Tripple. A bit less complexity than I expected from a belgian trippel, but still very enjoyable. I didn't have the right glass but I poured it into "Bruggse Straffe Hendrik" and it looked beautiful. The only drawback is that the head does not last.
I'm not good at describing the taste, but can you imaging a belgium trippel with less spice and more earth? That would be it.

Nose is spicy with Belgian yeast, softly fruity and malty. Smells pretty good.

Pours clear medium gold with moderate head. Looks good.

Clean malt body with spicy yeast and bright fruit. Softly spicy carbonation. Mild nutty biscuit malt and mouthfeel. Mildly creamy. Softly bitter. Tastes pretty good. Feels good. Highly drinkable.

Aroma is foul, I can't even describe it. Rotting dead beer?

Surprisingly taste is nothing like the aroma, which has a filtered generic Belgian yeast quality, funky-fruity-spicey but all at the same time sorta dull, it which reminds me a lot of Leffe Blonde. Beer is definitely not bottle conditioned, again like Leffe.

Besides it's faults it's not terrible and with Leffe reminds me a lot of an American take on the style. It's relatively easy to take down and I could see it doing well as a mass produced beer, which I suppose it is being produced by Palm.

A- Opaque, golden wheat color - like light gleaming off a trombone. Puffy, beautiful 2 fingers of head.

S- Powerful, totally overwhelming yeast aroma. Masked are hints of bubblegum and banana.

T- Initial watermelon and wheat flavors, rapidly shattered by sour yeast and mouth-drying hop aftertaste. Flavor gets worse with time.

M- Slightly creamy, yet surprisingly light body for a tripel.

D- The aroma of yeast and fruit beckons you to take a savory gulp. However, the shockingly strong, sour yeast taste wrecks the whole experience and makes this tripel unbearable. Terrible lack of balance.

A - 2 fingers of frothy head on top of wheat / brass color beer. It was mostly clear with a few wispy tendrils of yeast dancing on the bottom. The head died too fast and there was minimal lacing or lasting carbonation.

S - This had a light fluffy yeast smell. With what for me was unmistakably pilzner hops. It smelled to me just like a pilsner or AAP. After settling a while some of the malt smells did come out though.

T - Cool, golden, smooth, malty. They used different aroma and flavor hops. There is a spicy warm alcohol aftertaste. Peppery.

M - Creamy smooth, a bit of carbonation. Does leave a oily coating in the mouth.

D - The smell needs more work. The balance is too far off. This could be good with pizza or spicy sausage, something where you won't notice the alcohol kick as much. Drink sparingly

Cloudy orange amber with thin white head with okay retention and poor lacing. Adjunct herbal tea with a little sweetness. Very strong yeasty tea with poor bitter linger with some honey and apple. A semi-dry finish and bad aftertaste. Slightly syrupy with moderate to low carbonation.

Well, I always wondered what an average to poor belgian ale was like... now I know. There were some okay flavors but the bad hops and aftertaste was too much not to mention the mouthfeel was weak.

This tripel is paler golden colored with good lace from a head which retains well. An aroma of fruit, sugar, and citrus provide a solid to good base for the nose to please itself. The first impression upon tasting it is the flavor of heated liquid sugar. Some citrus, primarily orange, comes across to diversify the flavor. A slight grassy hop note is there too. The beer is surprisingly light and airy in the body, with easy approachable carbonation.

I think it was ironic that I was in Brugge just hours before I tried this beer in the nation's capital. A fine tripel to have no matter what city you're in.

A= nicely poured in appropriate glass, not sure how quickly it was served but the head was almost gone.

S= nice, florals, other intriguing scents, apparent bitterness in the nose.

T= very bitter up-front, more like a rose-wine with dill than a beer, typical of some of these less-usual Belgian specialties. Still, intriguing and a fun "gee gotta try it once" sort of Belgian beer.

M= same bitter aftertaste, dill, wine, something I wanted to get rid of.

D= if you're into this kind of stuff you'd probably enjoy it. Not for me.

Poured from a 33cL bottle into a hefeweizen glass.

A: Nothing special. A slightly hazy straw colour with bubble trails and a very light head.

S: Above average, but not great. Hops are the only distinguishable scent.

T: Carbonation and hops precede a bitter mid-flavour before fading into a dry aftertaste.

M: Sharp and refreshing. Hides the alcohol surprisingly well.

D: I have distressingly little to say about this beer. A very straightforward, decent tripel. If you want a beer you don't have to think about it, try this one. Very drinkable.

I did not know (untill now) that Palm makes this tripel beer.

Poured in my Maredsous glass the beer is cloudy yellow with a firm head which disappears after a short while. I have had better tripels than this but it's not bad.

Normal triple smell, nothing spectacular. With a reasonable mouthfeel and drinkability this beer scores OK!

A: Poured into snifter from growler. Pale amber colour, thin bubbly head. Center of the head fades quickly while a bubbly ring is left.

S: Not too many strong aromas. Hops, mainly and some sweetness that you find in many Belgian tripels.

T: Initial is a burst of flavour including malts, slight hops, some sweet honey-like flavour. Downside is that it doesn't last very long. Aftertaste is almost non-existent.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth, almost creamy.

D: Goes down very easy, barely any alcohol presence. Not a bad beer but there are triples out there far better.

It's very bizarre to see a Tripel served in a weizen glass - just further evidence that Brouwerij Palm - whose flagship ale I consider a bad imitation of one of Belgium's worst beers, Stella Artois - doesn't really "get" their country's rich brewing heritage. Brugge Tripel, however, with its hazy golden colour and abundance of head, looks traditional (even if its branded glass is not).

The aroma, too, is pretty par-for-the-course for the style, brandishing sweetish cereal grain, orchard fruit esters and a prevalent yeasty spice. There's footprints of toasty amber malt but they're hard to fully make out given the densely aromatic strain of Belgian yeast; it's a perfume so strong I'm surprised you can't see vapors of it.

The taste continues with yeasty spice and lightly-honeyed malt, but also showcases candied or dried notes of apple, pear and peach. There's also a higher appreciation of dried herbs. A style like this (which showcases fruit, grain, savory and spicy notes) is what makes beer so fascinating; four basic ingredients can create an infinite number of complex flavours.

Tripels drink with a deceiving lightness; this one especially looks (and by and large drinks) as light as any pale ale or pilsner but turns out to be much more satiating. Bubbles with sports car pep, ample malt and extroverted yeast manage to fulfill the appetite as well as pacify the mind - you really start to appreciate how gratifying it is once you feel your head get heavy.

Indeed, Tripels enclose another paradox: they are easy and effortless to drink despite startlingly high alcohol content. Brugge Tripel may not offer the intricacy of flavour or sublime drinking experience that the best Belgian examples can (Karmeliet, Westmalle, Het Anker, etc), but in this final category (approachability), it is every bit as agreeable as the others.
