A golden bright beer with a thin white head.

Smell is pilsner maly with some light wort-like character.

Taste is a little bitter. The maltiness is a little dextrinous. A nice bottom fermented beer which has a clean yeast profile. Aftertaste is bitter and has a slight sweetness.

Outside of the large head initially, this beer hits all the right expectations. The beer is mostly pale malt both in the smell and taste. The hop, not noted in the smell, is subtle but provides some balance.

The look is crystal clear straw.

Maybe it was the store, this is the 2nd brew that has looked "grey". But this one is a deep gold, but it is rather dull looking.

The smell is earthier than most of the style, it is predominantly malt with some noble hops.

The taste has a definite hop bite initially, it is fruity, but subtle. It has a n almost vanilla like malt presence with a slightly metallic finish.

I think it is an old bottle, gotta try it fresher.

500 mL bottle tried 27 Mar 2010.

Poured in a Seabright mug, a large lacy off white head fills much of the glass. Straw colored beer with a faint haze. Aromas of mineral, lemon, light malt and sour grapes. Starts faintly malty, perhaps a bit stale (no date on bottle). Grainy sweetness throughout, drier finish, slightly zesty. Aftertaste is lightly sweet and sort of lactic.

Pretty average overall, unlikely to get this again.

500ml bottle from Dyan. Thanks!

The beer pours a hazy golden-amber, a shade darker than most helles lagers, and a bit cloudier. The head settles to a thin but lasting cap within a minute or two.

The aroma is grainy, herbal, hoppy, and I get a light sulfuric quality as well. Smells dry and well-hopped for the style.

Dry, crackery malt hits the palate first, followed by lemon zest, herbal hoppiness and a bit of mineral. This is more of an unrefined helles, but it's very characterful and complex while still being incredibly quaffable. It finishes with a hint of fruity esters, dry graininess and moderate hop bitterness. Drinkability is through the roof, this is delicious and downright quaffable.

On John's recommendation, I grabbed a bottle at State Line.

A gorgeous pour, this beer is mildly hazy light orange capped by a large, dense white head that leaves some lacing in its wake. Head retention is quite excellent. A gorgeous beer, yeah.

The nose is a touch reserved, but still very good. Mildly sweet with a touch of honey, there's a tasty, refreshing grainy character present. Mild earthy hop character with a touch of lemon and some wet earth and just a little bit of grass.

The flavors open with a mild bitterness, earthy and a little lemony in character. A delicate malt character becomes apparent, with honey, some grain and some bread dough. Finishing dry with some earthy bitterness, this beer is solid. The mouthfeel, though, is a bit lacking. While the carbonation is great, I'm wishing this beer had a little bit more heft to the body, akin to some of the better examples of the style. That said, this is thoroughly drinkable, and I'm pounding my bottle in about 15 minutes.

I've come a long way from being uniformly disappointed with every Helles I had, and Casey at Max's really helped that transition by bringing some exceedingly fresh and tasty examples to Baltimore. Thank you, Casey.

Max's was out of the Aktien Hell, so at the recommendation of the bartender, I tried this. Excellent recommendation.

The beer pours a bright gold color with good head retention and decent lacing. Don't get too much on the nose, just some light sweet malt, a touch of honey, and some bread dough. What there is smells pretty nice. Flavors on the palate replicate the nose fairly well, except there is a hint of bitterness on the finish. The beer has some moderate malty sweetness, and is very light and smooth on the palate. Drinkability is, of course, just exceptional.

How can you beat a beer with this much flavor that clocks in at 4.7% alcohol? Good stuff.

0.5 ml bottle from La Bodega in Riverside, CA for $2.59 in May 2008.

Pours a clear moderate golden, a nice steady stream of carbonation keeping the thin head around throughout the session.

Aroma of bready malts and grassy hops- very clean and straightforward. Flavor is more of the same, bready malts, a nice round-about hop kick at the end, just plain nice. Minor lemony notes, but just barely. Unpretentious, just a solid tasty lager.

Spotted a half-liter at the Wine Exchange, on to the beer:

Into a stange it goes, the beer is a clearish blonde color, topped by a small head that holds pretty well. Lemon zest and cardboard is in the aroma with little else. The beer is a bit watery with some weak lager flvor. Some cider notes linger in the overall taste. Meh, not very impressed here. It's probably better fresh.

A 16.9 oz. bottle beckoned to me from the shelves at Beaumont Market; its $1.89 clearance price sealed the deal. Poured to a pint glass.

A: Light wheat yellow, ever so slightly hazy. Fluffy white head, about one-finger and moderate lace. Almost zero carbonation; still a good looking beer.

S: Big malty breadiness and lager yeast. Simplae and straightforward, sometimes those smells are just so nice.

T: Grainy malts, sweet at first then dry with hints of pepper and spice. Bitter finish leans toward the sourdough bread side. All in all, some pretty nice flavors.

M: Carbonated tingle, despite the lack of carbonation in the 'appearance' category. Light body, crisp, clean, refreshing.

D: A nice surprise. Rates well in the drinkability category as a clean, sessionable-type unassuming lager. Disn't last long in the glass...
