Dark and crystal-clear amber coloring with a modest off-white head, quite good lace and lots of effervescent carbonation. Tart and acidic burnt aroma, somewhat like over caramelized sugar. Taste begins tart and sour and gives way to strong bitter coffee notes; finishes with a lingering metallic aftertaste. The mouth feel is actually quite good. This beer looks a lot better than it is, alas.

Old bottle, perhaps not fresh...
Pour is very clear light copper...Not like a stout at all. Medium off white head. Smell is slight roast malt, metal. Taste is wow, terrible. Watery, very bland, purely terrible. this beer is awful, and one of the worst I've ever had, unfortunately.

a blend of stout and bock.cool!..hopefully better than a blend of wheat and durum ( a inside joke for anyone who has worked as a grain handler..= not a good thing)..I know some beer gods frown on the whole black-tan thing. This is my first, so in I dive in with my usual open-mindiness.

looked like watered down cola..head fizzled fast, not a good sign as it definitely wasn't too cold. Hey..decent lacing.

It's really trying to give me that chocolate/coffee stout smell here..but it's muted.

Some slight coffe/toffee taste initially with a hint of hop bitterness, maybe even a little nutty. But it seems to be out of balance...hence the blending thing i guess.

very, very thin and watery given it's parent ingredients.

got this in a 'beers of the world' 8 pack so bonus.would certainly taste fairy exotic to a macro-lager person..but I won't be activiating my PayPal account to get some more out of Minn.USA anytime soon.

Pours dark orange amber with a half finger of white that melts to a sticky ring.
Aroma is mostly amber malt with a hint of chocolate.
Taste is sort of toasted malt with sort of a hint of coffee and sort of a hint of milk chocolate.
Light hops follows.
Sticky aftertaste.
No thank you.

The beer is a dull amber colour with a thin crown of creamy tan head. Head fades fairly rapidly to a thin ring. Kinda looks like iced tea.

Smells a bit like roasted malt from a stout, but mostly seems to have a faint caramel aroma. Not much here, I really have to dig deep to pick up the smell.

In the taste department, this beer has a semisweet toffee flavour and a faint fruity finish. It is odd and lacking.

The mouthfeel falls around what I would expect from a pale ale, a little bit of body and medium carbonation. No stout feel here.

Goes down easy enough, but there really isn't much here. I'm not interested in looking for more of this one.

The aroma consists of malt tones with a tad of sweet chocolate and maybe caramel. The taste is a repeat in a very watered down version as well as a little underhopped for the blend it claims. Had it tasted like the smell indicated, it would have been much better. The mouthfeel is "coors light" thin and although it drinks down easy, it doesn't help much. Very bland boring beer.

Notes: Perhaps a stepping stone for a crossover attempt, but there's no other positive to this so called Black & Tan.

Thick, sudsy brown head, fades fairly quickly. Pours brownish amber clear with no residue. No bubbles. Nose is pleasant, rich, and chocolatey. No hops smell evident. Slightly charred odor. Pleasantly charred flavor with metallic overtones. A decent flavor in the mouth, but moves to a metallic taste. Mildly acidic finish. Watery, insubstantial mouth feel. A good beer that is ruined by off-flavors. The price (5.49 for a sixer at Albertson's) is noteworthy. Definitely better than a macro, though the good and the bad taken together add up to a just-mediocre beer.

This beer pours a dark golden color. It has an off white head that looks rather thin. It fades quickly leaving zero laces. The bottle said it is a mix between stout and bock. That is odd, since it is not dark at all. It smells slightly malty, but with an adjunct lager aroma to it. I detect almost no hop presence. It tastes like an adjunct lager. I thought it has stout in it. There is no hop bitterness at all. I can taste a slight malty sweetness, but mostly, I taste an off flavor. It tastes like a skunky amber ale. Or maybe a quality adjunct lager. It is slightly over carbonated. That might be at least slightly the problem with this beer. It leaves a skunky taste on the palate. I can see why it was only $4.99 a six pack at Albertson's. This beer would be a bad session beer because it tastes bad. I wouldnt want to drink more than one bottle of this stuff. Ever. Dont waste your time.

Presentation: 12 oz long neck bottle. No freshness info. Apparently this is a blend of Stout and Bock - never heard of that combination for a black and tan, but we'll see!

Appearance: Not quite what I expected. This poured a reddish amber with a very slight haze. Devent sized white head that faded to leave a thin film on top.

Smell: Aroma is mostly malty, but something is definitely a bit off. Almost a skunky smell.

Taste: Mouthfeel is pretty good - but there isn't much else going on here. Medium bodied with an overly sweet taste. Lingering aftertaste that is slightly sour.

Overall impression: Well, thats what I get for picking up a random beer at Albertsons. This isn't bad, but it definitely isn't very good either. Not much at all going on.

The other two Hidden River beers I had were very lame, this one is pretty good though. Appearance is a light amber color, head is medium height and somewhat creamy. Smell is very malty, it has the aroma of dark chocolates. Taste is good, flavor primarily consists of mild chocolate taste with a little bit of hops for balance. This is too light in flavor to be very good. I had an enjoyable enough time drinking this, but it isn't anything great. For cheap supermarket beer this is pretty good.

i bought this on a whim like a month ago because i had never seen it and i was in a shwaithy grocery store. its pours a crappy amber with a crappy head. it has a faint smell of sweet crap/malt. the taste just sucks. its off....like way off. ugh. the mouthfeel is ok, but it dosnt matter because every other aspect of this beer is horrible. and since when did a black and tan become a stout and bock mixture? i tasted neither stout, nor bock. i had to choke this down...and i still have 5 left that are up for grabs.

This blend of stout and bock poured a clear amber with a fair white head that left nice lace on the glass. This may sound good but for a stout and bock beer, I would suspect something approaching a black or at least a very dark brown. It has a very nice malty aroma and fills your nose with great smell with every sip. The taste is primarily malt with a hint of chocolate. The mouthfeel for the combination was light and disappointing. I bought a sixer and look forward to sharing the others with my friends. This is a good beer.

I guess I should have researched this one before purchase. Clear amber with asmall head that dissapeared when I wasn't looking. Aroma is skunky and on the sweet side. Taste reminds me of a Bud mixed with a pale ale. Mouthfeel is on the dry side with an unpleasant aftertaste. This is one that really makes you appreciate "good" beer. Should remain hidden forever!

Pours a dark amber color with a thin white head that quickly fades into a bubbly and wispy lace. Nose is smoked wood and charcoal. Medium in body with a taste of sweet caramel and weak coffee that turns a bit sour towards the finish. This is a very unusual beer. As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, maybe this beer is a good example as to why you don’t see many bottled black & tans.

Another single from Albertson's in Huntington Beach. I think this may actually be the first Black & Tan I have ever had. I think that may be due in part to the fact that a Black and Tan should never be bottled. This beer is a testament to the reasoning behind that rule. I always thought a Black and Tan served in a bar would allow the 2 different beers to separate like oil and water. This, on the other hand, was a copper-colored beer with a thin white head. The aroma is of burnt wood. The flavor has none of the good characterisitics of either Stouts or Bocks. This river needs to stay hidden for crying out loud.
