Appearance - This is a very dark ale in color, almost pure black, with a blackish-white head that rose up handsomely on an easy pour and left a pool of film in the center of the liquid.

Smell - This BSDA has a lot of roasted malt in the nose along with some baker's chocolate and maybe black coffee. It is very very dark with little to sweeten the aroma and quite pleasing to whiff.

Taste - Yes, this is very dark. The malts are roasted, almost burnt, and the black coffee buries most of the chocolate from the nose.

Mouthfeel - This is on the lighter side of medium-bodied with some rather fizzy carbonation. This was probably the only aspect of the beer that I didn't care for.

Drinkability - This is not a typical BSDA jumping with sugary complexity and yeasty undertones, but it is actually billed on the label as a "Belgian Stout". I enjoyed it overall but, again, thought the mouthfeel was lacking.

Pours a dark brown with ruby red highlights. A small eggshell head appears and becomes a ring around the glass. A bit light in color. Aromas start with slightly roasted malts and a touch of coffee. Earthy yeast tones underneath. A bit of cocoa but overall the aroma isn't very pronounced.

First sip brings mellow roasted malts upfront with a hint of cocoa and coffee that moves into earthy, estery Belgian yeast flavors. A bit of an odd fruity tone midway through the sip. It flows down with a touch of alcohol and some peppery licorice on the end. Interesting brew.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and light for a stout, but pretty much spot on for the Belgian stout category. Goes down smooth with good carbonation. This beer didn't really grab me and I doubt I'd grab it again, just not my style.

A 750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. It had been in my cellar for six months. There was an illegible date stamped on the label. The beer was dark brown with red highlights and a medium-sized tan head. A dark fruit aroma, with root beer and a little chocolate. Sweet fruity taste, still some root beer apparent in the taste. Did not think the alcohol was too noticeable. Very smooth, but I don't think I could drink too much of it at a time. It's a little too sweet.

Enjoyable to see this one on tap at the Blind Tiger in NYC. Not sure whats up with this seemingly emerging "Belgian Stout " style, but this one was pretty tasty. Also it was quite low carbonation in opposition to several of the bottled version reviews. Darkest shades of mahogany, next to no head and no lacing,fruity, slightly earthy nose. Dark malts and medium roasty. Ripe fruits, raisins, figs, decent complexity and interest here. Perhaps a wee bit thin in the body department. Nice on tap, if you can find it....Nice going Alan and the BTAH crew;.

Large corked bottle, clearly marked as 9% ABV...

Dark brown, lets some light through. Lots of tan puffy head, over an inch of it in height. Laces, however, are pretty scant. Slightly plummy aroma, oddly perfumed and fruity. Thin mouthfeel, very gassy and carbonated. Flavor doesn't work well at all for a Stout, bright and detergent sharp, green chlorophyll qualities with a strange tinny fruit taste and way under-powered in body. A little papery in the aftertaste as well. I am definitely not a fan of this rendition of a Stout idea, not a lot of positives in any category in my opinion.

First off the restaurant was decent (The Back Abby in Claremont CA)
They had a great selection of Belgian's but a few I wanted on tap were not available =/

As for this belgian-stout, I was expecting a lot more than what I got, judging by their excellent belgian collection I would think that any different style of beer would be just as tasty.

A- By far the "best" characteristic was the color in my opinion. A darkened hazeled almost deep brown hue. The head was almost dissipated by the time it arrived to my table, but from what I caught, it was a light LIGHT, very milk chocolate head. NO lacing at all out of my glass.

S- Light fruits, a fair yeast and a caress of lightly balanced alcohol in it. Not a strong point in this "stout."

T- Again, sweet light fruits, not as malty as I would want from a stout... A sweet/sour finish with a tad bit of alcohol spice in it. Not too impressive for the style, but decent.

MF- Light body with a medium-light carbonation. Yet again nothing interesting here. Even the alcohol finish bottomed out quickly from my palate.

O- For the price I paid on this I expected a just above average beer. This could be described as an average attempt on a belgian-stout to a just below average taste that I would DEFINITELY not spend 8 bucks on a flute for again. This may be a beer you would like to try for a reasonable price. And considering the history on it I was very intrigued, but again, for an affordable price it is considerable, not even a must. Even if you are a fan of belgians and stouts... Still... Just considerable.

On tap in a tulip glass at the Old Toad.

Appearance - barely any head, clear mahogany in color. Some lace.

Aroma - slight lactic sourness mixed with caramel and raisin notes.

Taste - I'm not getting the nutty roasted flavors I'd expect in a stout. There is some maltiness, but what stands out is a mild lactic sourness, surrounded by dark fruit flavors. Not as sour as a Flanders sour red, but sour enough to pucker the mouth a little.

Mouthfeel - thin body (again, not what I'd expect in a stout), finishes pleasantly crisp.

This beer is a bit more like a Baltic porter than like any kind of stout I've had. It feels more like the 6.5% abv stated on the brewery's website than the 9% mentioned in some of the other reviews. I imagine if I had more than 11 ounces of this I'd be able to determine how strong it is, but it does not feel strong. I could drink another one of these. An odd, but pleasant, brew.

A tremendously powerful "pop!" as the cork is pulled, and no surprise about the wealth of bubbles and resulting thick head. It's beige on top and glassy black below, which is not the darkest black I've seen on a beer, but it is impressive.

It might look alive in appearance, but there's almost nothing happening in the aroma. Faint toffee and dark berries hide behind a mellow metallic sheen. It doesn't even try to smell like anything. Not so much bad as boring. Hopefully there's more happening in the flavor.

Err...not much. Faint dark fruits (fig, plum, berry) work their way into the incredibly mild flavor. Insanely minuscule flashes of milk chocolate/smoke blow by without much presence. Slight tartness shows up in the finish. None of this is helped by the over-carbonated texture, which would've been okay on a beer with any flavor, but it doesn't do anything for this bland offering.

Subtle flavors and stealthy complexities are very much appreciated in a wide variety of beers. This one has neither. It limps past the tastebuds and takes up space in the gut. It's not that it's awful, it just doesn't even try. Best Before date on the label is Jun. 27 '08, so it's not expired. Stout enthusiasts should stay away, as it's anything but a stout, and Belgian beer fanatics in general will probably come away disappointed. One of the least remarkable brews from Belgium that I know of.

A - A clear brown beer with a light beige head that starts out strong an good, but retracts to a thin layer. The is some carbonation visible that races up.

S - A fresh and fruity smell with some yeast tones. I am missing the stout smell, there is some chocolate tone however.

T - Different! Almost a crossing between an light stout and a double ale with some chocolate, spices and fruit. Not enough sweetness and a light bitter finish.

M - To much carbonation in consideration with the taste. Therefore the taste is to thin. In the end the beer is light sticky and bitter.

O - It is not a dirty beer, but it doesn't fit the style. The high carbonation presence kills this beer.

Very dark brown with a white bubbly head. Lacey. Aroma some roast, and very mild yeast. The taste does not live up,but it is complex. Medium mouthfeel. Some sugar, roast, yeast in the taste. A shwartzbier with some Belgian yeast and sugar. A little sourness in finish.

taste: this one cant decide if its a stout or a belgian strong...falls a little flat in both categories. smoky with nice roasted malt notes, dull chocolate, plum and other dark fruit. just not very well rounded and lacking any showcase flavors

Corked and caged 750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours a dark black color with a large light tan head with really good retention and lacing. The aroma is pretty underwhelming that is fruity and malty with just a touch of roastiness as well. The taste much like the aroma for the most part is a disappointment. The taste is in need of more malt and more roasted characteristics for me to even consider it a "stout". The mouthfeel is light and highly carbonated. Overall, I am disappointed with this offering, I was expecting a little more. It is not horrible, but I would not purchase it again.

Poured a dark brown, but could see through towards the edges so it appeared fairly clear in its highlights. Not much of a head except some off white suds laced on top. Smell was a little roasty along with a belgian yeast sort of metallic note. The taste had some sharp alcohol and roasted malts- much more so than I've noticed for other belgian dark ales that come across a little more subtle in their dark malt character. There also seemed to be a bit of a hop character at the end, in bitterness and taste, to go along with the roastiness. Moutfeel is ok, a little lighter and less chewy than most belgian dark ales.

Indiscernible dating code on bottle.

Pours chestnut/mahogany with 4+ fingers of tan bubbly head. Sticky lacing that clings to half the glass ( La'chouffe snifter) & below average head retention

S: Sourness & not much else.

T: Chocolate, oaky dryness & hint of vanilla up front. Some leafy hops, chocolate, & little more sourness (some brett) as this warms. Finishes dry, sour & with some raisin & chocolate (rasinettety?)

MF: Medium-bodied with damn near zero carbonation &slight creaminess

Drinks alright for the abv, but not put together that well. Way better Belgian beers for the buck out there IMO, by far. Only for the desperate or curious

750ml brown bottle with coded freshness date.

Pours nearly black dark brown with huge wispy tan head. Smells very faintly of dark fruits (raisins, figs) and musty earth, yeast. Taste of slightly tart citrus fruits up front. Moderates and becomes a bit raisin-like in the center, then finishes with lightly dry medium-toasted malt. Rather too light and carbonated. Not particularly good. Aroma and flavor are bland and indeterminate.

A: Poured a nice dark brown with hints of ruby red noted. A fizzy, off white head about 2 fingers thick seemed to dissipate quite quickly leaving a small, bubbly head.

S: Smelled rather sweet with fairly distinct "alcohol" back notes. 2nd glass I definitely picked up on fruit, maybe figs.

T: Starts sweet and finishes slightly bitter in the mouth, but nicely bitter!

M: Seems rather light and fizzy.

D: It's okay, nothing amazing but worth a taste.

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured a deep red brown with a two finger very light tan head that subsided to one finger slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, roasted malt, charred malt, floral, and cream. The flavor was of sweet malt, cream, coffee, roasted malt, and charred malt. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a fairly average brew. Charred malt… Phew! How I do not like you at all. Because of this fact I really struggled my way through this one. There was a good bit going on in the aroma which was a welcomed changed from the charred note, but definitely not enough to dig it out of the hole that it had dug. I would not suggest this one to anyone I was hanging out with.

I'm reviewing this off notes from Beer U: Stouts at Stone Brewery.

A - Pours a very dark brown with three fingers of off-white head that stay and stay.

S - The belgian yeast is apparent in the nose. Smells very similar to a quadruple. Lots of sweet caramel aromas, with some roasted malts.

T - Sweet candied sugar is the first thing I noticed, with caramel, roasted malts and a hint of chocolate. I also pick up some dark fruit flavors.

M - Awesome carbonation makes this beer very easy to drink. Dark like a porter or stout, but bubbly and light like champagne.

O - A very unique beer, but definitely not a stout. I agree with the category Belgian Strong Dark Ale here on BA.

Apparently a lot of stout lovers have tried this beer, and have dinged it a bit because it's no stout. Thus is a BSDA, period. It happens to have a prominent roasted undertone of coffee, chocolate, etc. that is quite stout-like. But the body (barely medium), the puffy mouthfeel, the yeast, and the rest all scream Belgian strong dark ale. And it's a damned fine one.

BB 9/2/11. Consumed 2/21/12.

A: Cola pour is pitch black in the vessel with a sudsy khaki colored head that was porous, a finger high, but fairly quick to dissipate.

S: Musky dark fruit, plums, sour alcohol. A bit musty, yeasty and hospital like phenols. None to enticing.

T: Yeasty flavor, perhaps its best quality, because it sure isn’t the dark roasted stout nature. Musky damp grains, sugary bread with a fruitiness of pears and guava contributed by the strong yeast presence. While dark in color it is anything but roasty, think Guinness or Schwarz. The yeastiness outshines the dark malts with some barnyard attributes with hints of raisins, cane sugar and some rummy molasses dry alcohol.

M: light with a washy type of texture and feel. Sour yeastiness some fruity alcohol glow.

O: strong yeasty character, but lacks in terms of other stout qualities. Think a Guinness with a Belgian yeast, thin in substance and body, but does have some strong Belgian yeast roots with fermented fruit hints. In the end I cant recommend.

A: The Belgian stout is a dark chocolatey brown-black color, one that retains light and looks much darker and stronger than it tastes. The off-white head with tan hints is quick to dissapate.

S: The aroms is spicy, strong on candi sugars with cinnamon, coffee and baker's chocolate to boot.

T: The spice profile is a tad bit overwhelming. The cinnamon and baker chocolate grab hold of the tastebuds early and rarely let go. Any hints of coffee have been swept away but the overall sweetness from the candi sugars remains evident.

M: The mouthfeel is defined by the Belgian profile. Stouty roasted flavors are rare to emerge and rarely have the strength to get through.

D: One glass was enough and the 9$ alcohol is very deceiving.

750 ml bottle from Liquid Solutions. A 9% stout eh? Only in Belgium. Aroma is sweet and sugary with some stewed dark fruits and a heavy cola accent. It pours brown and settles red-brown to black. The body supports an amazingly fast fading head that starts two fingers thick (and very bubbly) but fades almost immediately to a patchy brown slick of a head.

Fore is quasi-roasty with lots of tongue tickling carbonation. Very slightly tart. The alcohol isn’t noticeable at first, but then you realize that almost tart whiskey like flavor is the alcohol, as it starts to warm you cheeks. The carbonation is way too high and the mouthfeel is way too thin. There are none of the classic stout hallmarks and to top it off what is there doesn’t taste all that good.

Poured form a 750 corked bottle into a standard red wine glass.

Lots of really thick head that took a long time to dissipate. Very light in color for a stout. Dark brown vs the typical jet black that I am used to. Extremely sweet. Tasted more like a dark triple than a stout. Strong taste of alcohol and a VERY dry finish. One of the driest beers I have ever had.
Only 9% alcohol but this beer made me real sleepy... I don't know if I would drink more than one. If I got this again I would age the hell out of it and see how it changed.

Definitely not the best stout I've ever had but worth trying. I was interesting to try a true Belgian take on a strong stout.

Thanks to BeerBeing for throwing this is in a recent trade. I'm glad this is not listed as a stout since other than the color there is nothing "stout" about this beer. Dark clear black but a white head? Crazy. The smell is also all Belgian yeast and sugar. As a Belgian Strong Dark it is not bad. The label says 9% so someone is wrong here. If it is 9% it is really easy to drink and pleasant tasting but nothing here will wow you. Dry, slightly sweet and really easy to drink. A curiosity but a must try for Belgian beer lovers like myself.

A: I didn't expect this beer to be classified as a BSDA - and it doesn't look like one - only during the pour will you notice it doesn't look like a stout - looks like an American black ale with a deep brown color; in the glass, pitch black with a tan head and lotsa lace

S: chocolate malts, little fruit; brighter yeasts and hops

T: yeast and hops percolate through dark malt with subdued fruit and coffee flavors

M: drying despite some chewy malt sugars - a very fizzy, crisp beer - especially for a stout, but then again this is a "Belgian stout"; thinner in body than a stout (too thin/watery for my tastes)

O: interesting ale - meets in the middle between a stout and a black ale, but with the brightness and lightness of a Belgian (pale) ale. If there were a category of beers called Belgian black ales, this would be one.
