A: Copper-amber with a light tan head, slight retention & lacing.

S: Plenty of dark toffee, pine & apricot, slight mustiness from their yeast.

T: Dark toffee, roasted nut, pine, apricot, tangerine, floral & slightly musty, good bitterness. With this much malt balance, it's really leaning towards an American Amber.

M: Moderate body has a slight residual sweetness and some hop acidity.

D: A decent drinker.

Well the label's not going to win any awards. That's for sure.

Pours an unexpectedly deep, ruby brown with a light tan head. Really nice head retention. Lacing's okay.

Smells an earthy floral pine and it's surprisingly malty.

The taste follows the nose, with the alcohol surprisingly noticeable for a 6% beer. Generous use of crystal malt gives it a strong caramel taste offset by a decent leafy, herbal hop bitterness with a finish that is somewhat wood-like, metallic, with a hint of roasted chocolate. Not sure this should be listed as an American IPA though.

Medium body with light carbonation.

As for drinkability...this is by no means a bad beer, but it's not a repeater for me.

Served at 40 degrees.

A: Poured a very dark copper into a pint with half a finger of head that quickly faded into a thin patch of foam in the middle of the glass. Did not leave much lacing but a circle of foam stuck around with great fidelity until the glass was done.

S: Aromas are geared more towards biscuity malts with an underlying hop floral hop presence. A very inviting smell.

T: Again, this beer seems more defined by its caramely malt character. The same floral hops as the smell appear mostly in the finish leaving a very pleasant and quenching after taste without much of a bite. Very nice balance.

M: The medium body feels a bit creamy and the carbonation feels just right. My preference in terms of IPAs tends to be a bit cleaner and snappier but this one's still interesting. It leaves a bready feeling in the mouth.

D: I could have a few of these as it went down easily and nothing in it is overwhelming by any means.

Overall, an IPA that seems more English than American to me. Nonetheless, a very pleasant brew and it's too bad that it's not available very often even here. I would gladly have one of these every now and then. On a final note, I wish this beer had a bit more snap in the hops department since the malt profile is pretty big.

12oz bottle purchased for $2.49 from Metro Joanette in Montreal. Pours an unexpected rich dark copper. Little head. Disappointingly weak aroma. Flavour is not disappointing however. It's strong and rich with a good deal of warming hops. This is not a West Coast IPA in terms of its hop profile - which is somewhat too bad as I feel most of those are tastier.

Ah...so that's what 'arrière' means. I thought it might have been the opposite of derrière. Anyway, pours a copper body with a medium cream coloured head. Nice sweet malty aroma for an IPA, with floral hops at the edge. Lots of caramel in the taste, with the hops following up in the rear to give a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Lacks the citrus overtones of a west coast IPA, so a lot closer to the english style. Medium body and carbonation. Another solid brew from this Quebec brewery.

This one was released December 2007.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle.

Label says "bière avec arrière goût" (beer with aftertaste)

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper with a tinge of ruby with a 2 finger head.

Smell: Dry hops aroma, aromatic with mild bitterness.

Taste: Hops are alive & fresh tasting, true to label, definite pleasant aftertaste. Think there's some berries hidden in there.

Mouthfeel: Malt-like feel, hops glide easily & there's a certain earthen quality. Though slightly bitter, very smooth on the palate.

Drinkability: Very easy to drink this, certainly would have again. Definitely like this.

Overall: Very well-balanced, flavorful brew, subdued but still leaves a good bite. A brewer that i like more & more.

12 oz. bottle into a harpoon pint glass.

clear copper amber with an inch of tan head that leaves nice lace.

lots of malts in the aroma for an ipa. some pine hops with a bready, caramelly, malty front.

caramel malts with a stiff, dry bitterness. pine and rind hop flavors. light but creamy mouthfeel with a very light carbonation. definitely a canadian ipa with the light carbonation and subtle hop flavors. definitely doesn't compare well with the bolder american ipas available.

Dark coppery clouded color with a medium ivory cap of sifting froth. Fades to keep a good skim and collar as it distributes a great sheeting lace in thinly placed snow shelves.

Aroma is thick and malty with a big caramel/toffee scooping with a leafy, dry wood hop topping. Very clean with a smidgeon of deep woodsy alcoholic vapor.

Taste is a bit understated, not much hop bite or profile beyond a weakened dry woodish sense floating around the edges of a dulled caramel/toffee malting that tends to make up the overall sensibility of its character from front to back. Clean tasting, but unfulfilling in the fashion of any IPA. Dryish finish of wood and fresh hop cone leafyness calmly sets a light dash across the palate with a dusting of chocolate and cardboard.

Feel is a little flattened, no real snap or bitterness, nor carbonation or body. Clean, creamy, but weakened mediumish body, perhaps from age as the bottle has no freshness dates?

Glides down fairly well with its clean, softly creamyness found from its big malt base evident from the waft of caramel on the nose and overall taste. The hops try to push forward but never quite make it. It conjures up memories of fresh west coast IPA's by Stone but without the full hop onslaught or freshness. Perhaps an extremely fresh tapping or bottling could produce a better product then what transpired through the trade this was acquired in. Thanx Sammy!

Copper with hop bubbles . Piney aroma. Long bitter drink with some toasted caramel offset. Dry bitterness not for everybody, acidic grapefruit there. Drinkable. Medium mouthfeel. Had side-by-side with Sgt-Major which is also bitter and Bieropholie tops it.

Pours a clear amber brown, big off white head, lots of lace. Smell is clean and crisp, slight citrus, floral and earthy. Taste is chocolate roast, floral grassy hops, alcohol, but of iron. Very smooth, crisp, bitter bite at the end, good carbonation. Thanks DrJay.

A very dark copper colour for an IPA, with a thick white head of foam. Aromas are very balanced and consist of fresh floral hops and chewy deep malts. The taste is good, but for an IPA it is sub-par. Although this may be the hoppiest beer being brewed in Quebec, this is more like an English IPA, not a hopped up west-coast version. The sweet malts play with the bitter hops, to creat an inevitably drinkable session IPA. The mouthfeel and drinkability are also both very good, as this is a very well balanced brew! I fins the IPA 2 to be strikingly similar to the IPA 1 in almost every aspect of aroma and flavor. However, the hopping seems a little more subdued, as does the aftertaste, this may be because this was an older bottle I was having the other day, i'm not totally sure. Either way this one ended a little drier than #1, but they are just very similar in my mind, and I almost have to think they are the same damn brew....I'm confused. However, i'm not confused by the fact that this brewery is pumping out some absolutely fantastic brews, and the latest IPAs in their project (goldings and cascade) are both fantastically fantastic...Go Quebec.

Ruddy orange/red, almost clear, topped by a generous, dense, cream coloured head. Excellent retention and nice lacing. Good combination of malts and hops in the aroma, some toasty caramel and quite floral and spicy. Assertive bitterness all the way through, pine resin and citrus with a bit of hop spice. Toasted, bready maltiness has a short-lived appearance. Finishes with a drying bitterness and lingering hop flavours. Round, medium body with moderate carbonation. Overall impression: surprisingly bitter for a Canadian beer. I'm really glad they weren't afraid to hop it up. I'll be looking for this one again. Thanks for the trade northyorksammy.

Well, it's a good thing we have photos of the bottles for educational purposes, or I wouldn't have known whether I had a #1 or #2 IPA on my hands. #2 it is, many thanks to Goldorak for including this in a BIF.

This IPA is a deep woody amber colour, almost a garnet tinge, not as murky as the Cascade from Bieropholie. Big loose spongy head on the pour with lots of sticky lacing. The nose on my sample is fairly mild for an IPA, chewy caramel malt accompanied by sweet floral and citrus hops. Very nice balance in the flavour, the malt and hops work in tandem to make this a smooth, pleasant ride. Bready caramel malt up front which grabs the hops for a sweet tango all the way to the finish, with a bouquet of grapefruit, pine and honey. A very smooth and creamy mouthfeel, very enticing and it adds a great deal to the overall experience. This most certainly isn't a knock you on your ass and molest your taste buds type of IPA, but it definitely is a well balanced, if mild for it's style, session ale that I wish I had available here in Alberta. More cheers for Bieropholie, my favorite Canadian microbrewey.

A nice amber beer in color with a great foamy head that is creamy. Some reddish light hues travel that beer. A nice malty, caramel smells are present with a decent hoppist flavours that are also noticable.

Some caramel flavours are present, with malt, but a decent hop presence is there too that makes herself shown. Some citrus flavours, a shy floral presense is also there. The presence of alcohol is quite decent too, I can feel it. A nice mouthfeel and very drinkable beer!

nice IPA les gars!

According to the previous review and the picture, this is IPA #2 from Brasserie Bieropholie. No extra info, even in french on the lable, other than 6%a.c/vol and the web address. ( www.Bieropholie.com)

Color is a deep, rusty amber with loads of clotted foam and lace. Slow streams of carbonation rise thru the slightly chill hazed beer.

Aroma is awsome - bready caramel malt and floral hop, hints of wet straw and smoke. Not overly hoppy, but very inviting.

Up front , malty flavors of white cake and porridge flood the mouth with grainy sweetness - malt flavors and aromas are very unique. Strong, almost harsh hop flavor and bittering quickly dominate , sharp and grassy with hints of leather, wood and clover.

Bitterness is strong - this is the hoppiest Canadian beer Ive ever tasted! Finish is all grassy / piney hop at the back of the throat, and on the tongue, long and lingering.

It lacks a little body and malt to back up the huge hop profile, but I like it! Too bad I only got 1!!

IPA#2 is Bièropholie's second beer called simply "IPA". You can tell which one you have by the placement of "IPA" on the label: top left is IPA#1, top right is IPA#2. The subtitle "avec arrière goût" ("with aftertaste") is a shot at wimpy beers that advertize "no aftertaste" as though that were a good thing.

Two inches of dense, light tan foam leave sticky, thick, psycho lacing. The beer is an almost clear, dark red-brown. The nose is chock full of sweet grapefruit, pine and caramel. Very big. Sweet, dark caramel in front persists through the thick, sweet, creamy middle. Bitter grapefruit dominates the finish, but the caramel is still there. Excellent. It's a big, malty, hop monster (or maybe even a big, hoppy, malt monster). Cheers to Bièropholie for another winner.
