Presentation: It was poured from a brown 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 9.5% and there is a short description of the beer as well.

Appearance: The body has a very dark brown, motor oil like pour. In the glass it looks black as night and opaque with a small tan head. It's head holds on well and makes lots of nice slick lacing on the glass.

Smell: In the nose I get notes of chocolate, caramel, fresh baked bread, molasses and raison.

Taste / Palate: The flavor brings all of the wonderful notes from its aroma to the tongue on a big full and smooth palate. In the background there is a very light sweetness and mellow vanilla undertone.

2014

Very dark ebony color yields a thick creamy head of dense foam.

The chocolate is so strong I had to look at the label. The vanilla from the barrel is well mixed with the chocolate as it holds a slight bourbon aroma.

The flavor is chocolate forward but it melds well with the oakey vanilla. The bourbon certainly takes a back seat but it's evident. The finish is malty, maybe caramel, and is never cloying.

The feel is appropriately thick with very little carbonated touch.

This was so good and I shared it with a friend. Kinda wish I hadn't;).

22 oz. bottle poured into a Mad Fox snifter glass, unknown brewing/bottling date but 2014 vintage, drank over more than an hour

A: 3/3 - jet black, know light passes through, initially frothy khaki head gives way to a 1/4 finger glass lacing, moderate-to-high carbonation with tight tannish bubbles most notable around the lacing, moderate-to-large alcohol legs

S: 10/12 - intense bourbon-barrel notes - vanilla, coconut and stone fruit; in ordered of subsequent intensity, there is cacao/chocolate, roasted malts, earthy but subtle hops and alcohols

T: 18/20 - the flavors match the taste perfectly - on the front of the tongue, there is an admixture of barrel-aged qualities and cacao/chocolate character; as the flavor profile develops, there is an intense roasted malt sweetness with figs, dates, raisins and stone fruit; finishes slightly sweet with a residual alcohols but not at all cloying

M: 4/5 - medium body, creamy, slightly higher than desired carbonation for style; alcohol and hop bite on the tongue provides additional fullness

O: 9/10 - wow, this beer totally took me by surprise; to be frank, it's one of the best barrel-aged stouts that I've had in recently memory and I've had a few good ones, e.g. Westbrook's Cap'N Skoon's Ballistic Stout (Bourbon Barrel Aged); this beer just fires on all cylinders with intense barrel qualities, cacao/chocolate, roasted malts and alcohol yet not one aspect is out of balance; it's truly a delight to drink, and the only reason that I can envision why this beer doesn't have more hype surrounding it is because it's from a relatively overlooked Baltimore-based brewery; if it came of out CA or VT, people would be clamoring for it;, and you should be; the price point is also very reasonable at ~$10/22 oz. bottle
