12oz bottle with a purchase before date notched on the label. Served in a pilsener glass.
Pours a bright gold with two fingers of foamy white head. The clarity is slightly hazy with some tiny particles suspended in the body and about average carbonation. Head retention is good and leaves rings of lacing with each drink. The aromas are mostly clean with grainy malts and floral hops, with just a hint of sweetness and alcohol mixed in. The flavors are mostly of bready malts, with a thicker/sweeter/molasses-like thread running through. This is balanced nicely with a solid spicy hop character. There are also some earthy qualities added in, presumable by the yeast. There is an ever so faint bitterness that hangs on in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. The finish is rather clean.
There is nothing light about this pilsner. The brewery claims this to be the "unofficial" Original American Uber Pils, and to that I say congratulations. It is like taking all of the things I like in a pilsner and amplifying them, so as to better hide the less desirable traits. The best part is they have done this without making the increased alcohol stand out too much. Oh it's there, it just doesn't overpower the core ingredients. So, if you like or would like to try, a lager style beer that is full of flavor, I would recommend giving this one a try. I would certainly enjoy another.
