12oz bottle poored into a pilsner glass.

Poors a clear golden yellow with flaky yeast particles drifting down as the 2 fingers of fluffy white foam subsides to a froth covering. Smell is sitrus and spicey clove upfront with some fruity sents and sweet malts making an appearance as well. The alcohol is also pressent in the nose. Taste is clove spice and fermented fruit with a citrus kick to go with a backdrop of sweet almost sugary wheat malts. Mouth is very nice with lively carbination and this is certainly easy to get down.

Not sure on Saison style since this is my first one, but for sitting on my porch on a hot afternoon this beer was certainly a winner.

"A sailor's delight, our Belgian style saison is made with imported yeast, candi sucre, and wheat malt. Intensely spicy and refreshingly fruity." Brewed in the style of a Saison/Farmhouse Ale. Available as an early fall seasonal in 12 oz. 6 packs and on draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Heavy Seas pint glass. Served above 55º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy pearl head of a foamy, smooth consistency over an orange amber body. Clarity is very high, aside from a fine flecked sediment. Carbonation is vivacious and plentiful. Retention is very good and lacing is light and clingy. 4.25

(Smell) Fluffy wheat malts, banana and clove make for a potent phenolic aromatic presentation, not too far unlike German hefeweizen ales. The candied sugar is also very evident up front, providing a very filling sweetness to the aroma. Overall the malt body, sweetness and yeast characters make Red Sky At Night more heavy on the nose than the average saison, but uniquely so. I could comfortably fit this under a hybrid category. Potency is moderate. 3.5

(Taste) Very soft, smooth wheat malts aided in sweetness by a thin candy sugar syrup and rounded out in flavor by distinctive banana and clove notes, although better balanced in the flavor than in the aroma. A bit of spicy alcohol heat is discernable. Finishes with an herbal, peppery and mild tropical fruit finish with a subtle bitterness. Despite stretching the guidelines of the style, I found Red Sky very drinkable and quite enjoyable. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Smooth, thinly syrupy and chalky. Carbonation aides in a subtle, fluffy mouthfeel. Body is medium/heavy for a saison and medium+ overall. Balance is slightly in favor of sweetness over bitterness. Alcohol presence is mild. 3.75

(Overall) A saison with a lot more flavor potential going for it than you can get from just yeast alone, Red Sky At Night builds a solid body with a distinctive candied sugar influence and rounds out well-balanced and softly textured. Not by any stretch definitive of the style but certainly worth giving a shot as it is fairly unique on its own. 3.75

A: Poured from the growler into an Ommegang tulip. Body is dark-orange with a whitish head. Some lace.

S: Yeasty overall with spice and cloves.

T: Sweet malt foundation is followed by spices and clove. Some citrusy hops at the finish. Heat from the alcohol is felt in the belly.

M: Medium in heft, a bit slick-ish in feel.

O: Good, though a little too hot from that high ABV and the slick feel doesn't really work for a saison.

not the greatest saison I've had. but it is drinkable. has the base flavors but its just not that complex. might be picking up some cinnamon spice. otherwise just a little too sweet for the style. good value though, and still refreshing. a bit heavy, I like this style between 6-7%

Bottle poured into a tulip.

Appearance is a golden/amber color, not much of a head - maybe a finger's worth, minimal retention, minimal lacing.

The aroma was a mix of spices (mainly picked out clove and cardamom), bread that seemed on the sweet side, a bit yeasty.

The taste seemed out of balance toward the sweet side. The clove was easily picked out, some phenolic flavors, a bit of citrus, a touch of pepper. There was a bit of acidic funkiness and a surprising warming effect at the end. It seemed a bit too sweet for the style.

The mouthfeel was a little heavy - not what I would call light and refreshing. The carbonation was moderate.

Overall, this was not a bad beer, but I don't think it was quite a saison either. It seemed to be more of a tripel or some other Belgian style. Not sorry to have tried it, but probably don't need to buy it again. Just didn't meet the truly expectation of a saison.

A: The beer is clear yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that quickly died down, leaving a patch of bubbles in the center and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Belgian yeast are present in the nose along with underlying notes of candi sugar.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell and has flavors of Belgian yeast and candi sugar, although no sweetness is perceptible from the latter. Hints of bananas and spices are also noticleable.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This saison seems to be a little heavier in body compared to most of the other beers I've tried in the style, possibly due to its use of candi sugar as an ingredient.
