2016 release
22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

Looks like thin maple syrup in the glass. It is crowned by a one finger tan head that leaves just a bit of lace along with an oily coating on the side of the glass.

The nose is fairly strong and full of raisin, fig, caramel and molasses. Some alcohol is present as well.

Taste is smooth and sweet finishing with a a little tang and touch of heat. Simple and straightforward, dark fruit and molasses are the mainstays of flavor.

Medium bodied with low carbonation it is soft and viscous.

Not complex but easy sipping and very enjoyable. Wish I had more of these hidden away.

Poured from 22 oz. bomber to tulip.

A: Hazy garnet, almost purple. Quickly fading head leaving a very small ring.
S: Prune, red grape, grassyness, brown sugar.
T: Dark fruits and yeasty funkiness at the beginning, oaky textures throughout, Charred aftertaste.
M: Medium-full.
O: Alright. Not the most pleasant aftertaste.

1 PT 6 FL OZ bottle
Served in a goblet

This beer pours brown with ruby highlights. It is topped with less than an inch of tan head that leaves no lacing.

The smell is fig, dates, and molasses.

The taste is similar to the smell. It starts out sweet and malty with flavors of figs and dates. It has a dry, oaky finish.

Medium to full mouthfeel

I'm not going to complain about this beer simply because it was $7.99 for a bomber. The flavor was above average, and it is 10.5%.

First beer of 2017, is a 2016 Heavy Seas Plank IV. Sweet beer, has some woody notes, but not enough complexity to make things really interesting or overcome the sweetness. The base beer is supposed to be a Belgian quad, but reminds me more of an old ale. Very low carbonation. Overall, it's ok, but not great. Had some of the past versions of Plank, and similarly they were decent but not great. Thought maybe this latest version would be a significant improvement, but just not so.

Pours a brownish copper with ruby edges and about a half finger of head. The nose has notes of bread and wood. The flavor is sweet and sticky with a solid malt backbone and a nice woody essence on the finish.

A: This poured a cloudy dark mahogany with no head.
S: It smelled like dark fruit and dry earthy leather and wood, with some molasses and vanilla.
T: It tasted like prune and fig and cherries, with some molasses and oak and vanilla and leather. It had a clean earthy sweet aftertaste.
M: It was oily with a bit of carbonation. Nice slick body.
D: This was a delicious brew with complex scent and taste that improved as it warmed. The body was a bit weak, but the finish was smooth, so it was easy to drink. No need to age, although it could last. Recommended.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pt 6oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance: The body has a deep dark garnet color with a slight haze. This is topped with a small, slow fading head of tan foam. The head just holds a wispy this layer and lacing is very slick.

Smell: The aroma brings notes of dark fruit, earthy dank wood and sweet candy like malts to the nose. I also get a light nutty note with some funky yeast and very faint herbal hops way off in the background.

Taste/Palate: The flavor has a big full bodied hit of sweet fruity malts with earthy and almost spicy woody flavors. Dark fruits like plums, raisins and dried black cherries mix with dank oak, maple and cedar like woody notes. Hop flavor is very mild and the finish is on the sweeter side.

On-tap 6/24/2016 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains candy sugar, Belgian yeast, caramelized malts and dark fruit.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of candy sugar, dark fruit, caramel and licorice. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium-to-heavy body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down dangerously easy, slightly filling, strong well-disguised kick, decent representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for while if you’re in the mood for the style.
