Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Higravity on 09-09-2005

Burnished gold with a rich citrus hop aroma, it is wonderfully drinkable with a big hop flavor. We’ve knicknamed it Hop3 (hop cubed) ale to reflect the enormous amount of hops in this beer: over 3 pounds per barrel! It is hopped 3 ways: in the kettle, in the hop back, and dry hopped.

12oz bottle into a wine tumbler.

A: Clear gold/copper with 1/2" white head that recedes quickly. Not much retention or lacing.

S: Pretty big citrus, some dank notes, bread dough, definitely some pine, fig, brown sugar.

T: Fairly resinous hop profile. Some lemon peel & faint grapefruit. Bready malt. A skootch of melon. Less complex than expected, but not bad. Hops are really flavoring this brew, not bittering it very much.

M: Solid. This IPA has a big malt body & is generously carbed, which helps to keep it away from syrup-city. Pretty dry actually with a velvety quality on the palate. Quite quaffable.

O: I'd say it does the job. I might have liked some more bitterness, but beyond that it's pretty impressive.

This was a really great IPA that lived up to it's name. I see why they call it Hop Cubed. The hops were extremely floral and pronounced with layers of varieties washing over each other as you took a sip. It was very pleasant with a nice background fruitiness that helped accentuate the hops and keep them in the forefront.

Would absolutely purchase again.

A: Pours a glowing golden amber with a thin, creamy white mousse that lingers far longer than one would expect.

S: Aromas of caramel, biscuit, grass, herbs, bitter orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime fill the nose.

T: Robust notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, bitter orange, grass, herbs, biscuits, crackers, and caramel are underscored by subtler than expected flavors of pine and spruce. The finish is bitter and only mildly sticky, emphasizing the commendable interplay of citrus, caramel, and biscuit flavors.

M: Medium-bodied and somewhat sticky, though compared to many American IPAs, this one is rather dry. Carbonation is firm and somewhat prickly. The alcohol is totally undetectable. This ale is easy to drink, but if you are not careful, it can creep up on you quickly.

O: A really good American IPA. I cannot believe I waited this long to try this one. I can definitely see it becoming a regular in my fridge.

Draft at an amusement park believe it or not! Insanely hot day - 96 degrees and very humid. This golden IPA looks clean and crisp. Smells of citrus hops. First taste is quite hoppy but not as bad as one might think. Easy to drink. Clean and crisp on the palate. Little bitter on the front end and maybe a little more on the back end. Solid IPA.

Deep golden with some burnt orange hue, thick white head and ropey lacing. Aroma is soft, citrus predominately but too soft to pick up anything else in the aroma profile. Had to pull back the scoring a bit due to the lack of aroma. Orange, grapefruit, slightly resinous and somehow zero bitterness. Very clean and citrusy IPA which I love. Nice medium body, coating and slightly sticky. This is a straight forward, clean, and easy drinking IPA that's well done.

I saw this beer reviewed in a blind taste-test tournament as a finalist and had to give it a try.

A - Very nice light amber color. Fluffy, fine bubbled white head with very good lacing. Just a little haze from the dry hops but still very appetizing.

S - Very good hop nose with Pacific NW hops. Citrus and grapefruit hop character outstanding. Slight malt character but the fresh citrus, herbal, and resin hop character shines true.

T - Has a great hop flavor that holds the beer nicely on the tongue. It's a pretty big hitting IPA with that resin, citrus, and grapefruit. More malt sweetness than in the smell that balances nicely. Moderate bitter finish that is accompanied by some sweetness that makes this a good drinker.

M - Moderate mouth-feel. Moderate carbonation. This one is quite balanced and easy going down. Still sweet on the front and bitter on the finish leaving it balanced on the palate. A great summer IPA.

Overall, a tremendous American IPA. I really enjoyed this IPA with the serious American hops and the great balance over the tongue making this beer supremely drinkable. Not the best IPA that I've ever had but I can understand the respect this beer draws. If you like IPAs no doubt you should get this one.

This brew pours a semi-transparent golden color with heavy carbonation and a small white head which lasts until the end; almost no lacing.

The smell is grapefruit, lemon, orange peel and malt. There is also a smoky or tobacco smell. The tobacco smell gets stronger as this beer warms up.

The taste follows the nose with the grapefruit, orange then lemon taste dominating. The bready malty backbone is there with more than a hint of caramel. The finish is bitter with a tobacco taste mixed with a little pine taste that tends to remain as an aftertaste. I can't detect any alcohol in the taste. The feel is thick and bready.

Overall this is a solid, highly hopped American IPA.

This is an IPA done right! Ranks up there with Dogfish 60 Minute IPA. I love the nose on this one! Very piney, a little citrus, but you know you're diving into a vat of hops. She pulls no punches with taste! This one is a little strong in the mouth, but the finish is sublime! Balanced with dry, herbal notes on the palate. Perfect to compliment spicy food.

Wow. Very impressed. First I was taken back that I had this pint at a TGIF of all places? The waitress was super cool and suggested based on my snobbish appeal to some type of local brew. This beer has many flower power elements which is probably why I loved it.

Appearance 4.0: Pours out a lovely golden color. Nice 1" head. Good lacing.

Smell 4.0: Great nose on this beer. Light, almost peppery hops along with a very pleasant malt.

Taste 4.25: Front is filled with floral hoppiness. Very nice, I am thinking probably Columbus hops. Middle is light, refreshing and features more of that great hop blend of alkaline and floral. Finish is smooth and somewhat dry with a subdued alkaline hoppiness that slowly fades into the Aftertaste, which is long and delicious with hints of grapefruit.

Feel 4.0: Very good balance of a full mouthfeel with a pleasant hoppy dryness.

Overall 4.0: Great beer. Excellent blend of hops and good balance of those hops with malt. Refreshing, delicious and all-around pleasing. Would be a great sessioner.

A- a great looking beer. 2 finger head when poured. Creamy in taste mouth feel. Dissipated after a few minutes. Great color. A dark amber orange color. Slightly hazy. Nice lacing down glass, but not the most I've seen.
S- hops with peachy orange tones to smell.
T- slight Mellon tones come out on first sip. Then followed by non bitter slight piney hops, little citrus too. Followed up by sweet malty notes reminiscent of simple syrup taste.
M- slight tingle on front of tongue. But overall nice and smooth.
O- a nicely balanced ipa. Only positive flavors are strong. Nothing bad to say. Would drink again.

This is my kind of IPA...big hop aroma and flavor without the sharp hop bitterness.

Aroma is complex....floral notes...pine...citrus (sweet pink grapefruit, tangelos). Big time aroma

Taste is complex as well...more of a sweeter melon flavor, peaches, still the floral and pine notes....really outstanding..

Lower carbonation makes this real easy to drink.

Top notch IPA..one of the best I have had.

A bright light orange with a finger worth of white head. Smell is of lots of citrus and orange. Taste is similar with tropical fruit and citrus, hop bitterness, with a caramel malt finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Nice fruity and citrusy IPA.
