I'm not sure why an additional difference between this and the barrel-aged version is the style it's listed as, but oh well. Notes are from the Fall of 2012, about 5 months ago, but complete.

The label's color almost speaks to the beer's, as it leans toward brown but has very much a red shade to it from the thickest to thinnest parts of its body. A big creamy off-white head is frothy and tops off at just less than 2 fingers. Lacing is chunky and sticks in very good quantity.
Both creamy and fruity sweetness run out of this beer's aroma, with spiciness to boot. Dark cherry, clove, must and thick, dark breads are foremost. Alcohol is a bit aggressive, a bit on the ethanolic side, and a medicinal kind of note lingers a little.
There's not as much sweetness on the tongue, though again a lot of dark fruit notes come out. Some of that's dryer, come sweeter. Chalky, musty notes add dryness from the yeast, which also adds lots of clove spiciness. Caramel's there in the malts with the bigger bready tone, and a little of a not-quite-smokiness, like the tasty smokiness in certain caramels, accompanies it. It's a little bit phenolic, and the alcohol's not shy, but it comes together.
The body's got a nice strength and fluff to it, keeping up a consistent crispness while managing a smoothness that rolls nicely on the tongue. Alcohol isn't too sharp, and surprisingly not considering its effect on the smell and taste.

Poured a murky, cloudy mahogany with a quickly fleeting, fizzy head that left a light sheen for lacing.

Creamy banana on the nose was a bit surprising. I found a prominent malt base and a cider like component to the scent also.

The taste is smooth, creamy dried fruit, not candied or sugary, but sweet enough. Also there's some chocolate malt and some milk chocolate. Not a lot of barrel flavor but some good flavors nonetheless.

The feel is thicker, despite the fizzy appearance, smooth and creamy.

Overall, this was a 2013 that may have needed a little more time, though the feel was excellent. The subtle barrel complexities could have been more prominent with more age so I will cellar the other one.

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 7.49. 2013 vintage. Served in a high ball glass.

Pours a mahogany hued deep brown with a finger and a half sandy cream head. The head disappears without leaving any lace.

Smells of mild vinegar (like many sours), caramel and stone fruit with the brandy coming in stronger as it warms.

A pretty smooth and pleasing blend of cherry skins, prunes, caramel, brown sugar, bitter apple peel, a slight woodsy barrel note and brandy/booze.

Creamy medium full body with fairly subtle carbonation. Brandied fruit finish.

This seems to occupy a space for dark fruity Belgians somewhere in between dubbels and quads/BSDAs. It is fairly robust and complex. As with others in the newly revamped and barrel aged Uncharted Waters series this is an outstanding value. Under eight bucks for a barrel aged abbey ale. It may not be stellar or ground breaking but it's worth a try.
