Poured from a bomber into a Brewer's Art goblet with a moderately aggressive hand. 2013 vintage, but no specific dating on the label. There is a cartographic background with a scary pumpkin head.

A: Honey-orange body with a slight haze. 1 finger off-white head with ok retention. Light lacing. Not too shabby.

S: Nutmeg & pie spice. Bourbon. Oak. Lighter cinnamon and booze.

T: Lightly sweet with a tame spiciness that develops into a pleasant, even-tempered bitterness. Fairly dry finish for the flavor profile. Noticeable alcohol consistent with 10% ABV. Light oak, nutmeg, vanilla. I can detect some actual pumpkin, which I find fairly rare for most pumpkin beers. There is a pronounced whiskey finish to this brew.

M: Moderate to low carbonation with a good smoothness. Moderate body. Some alcohol burn is there, but not unwelcome.

O: Nice beer. I find the bourbon/barrel-aged notes to be fairly present. I appreciate the restrained sweetness and appropriate hopping. Well balanced. Good sipper.

Prost!

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. 2013 vintage.

A: Pours a mostly clear amber with an off white head. Lots of visible carbonation going on in the body. Spots of lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: Spiciness up front with a dose of sweetness. Graham cracker like crust aroma is present which I like in pumpkin beers. Bourbon barrel aging doesnt make too much of an impact.

T: As with the aroma there is a healthy dose of spice to this one. Cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg come to mind. Bourbon is light in the background adding just a touch of vanilla, oak and booze.

M: Medium body with lots of carbonation for such a boozy beer. Retains a creamy mouthfeel. Finish is a bit sticky which is understandable considering the sweetness. Alcohol isnt too hot.

Overall its a pumpkin beer that exemplifies the style but I still feel that this one could push the envelope a little further. A bit more bourbon and pumpkin flavor.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

Pours a bright, hazy orange. One inch fizzy head. Small amount of lacing.

Smells like pumpkin spices- clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc, oak, vanilla, pumpkin.

The taste is pretty similar. Strong spicing especailly nutmeg, with oak, vanilla, and some slight, sweet bourbon flavors. Some rum-like flavors too, with brown sugar and molasses in small amounts. Biscuity sweet malts.

Medium to light body. Well carbonated, creamy mouthfeel. Very drinkable.

An excellent BA Pumpkin beer. I think this would also lend itself well to rum barrel aging.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Founders snifter.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy copper-orange with a thin off-white head.

Smell: Pumpkin, pie spice, and molasses up front with bourbon undertones. The bourbon is definitely subtle, but adds a very nice layer of complexity. Excellent.

Taste: Unfortunately goes a little downhill here. Maintains a similar profile to the aroma with pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice taking the forefront, but flavor-wise it's pretty mild. Once again, the bourbon flavor is very subtle. The alcohol presence, however, is not, and really weighs this down a bit. If there was more flavor overall it would be able to stand up to the alcohol, but as it is it gets overpowered a bit. Still a solid taste, just not as good as it could be.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a medium carbonation level. Definite alcohol heat.

Overall: This is a good beer, and the bourbon offers a nice change of pace from the standard pumpkin beers out there. Ultimately it just needs more flavor (both pumpkin and bourbon).

2013 vintage. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a light copper with a fluffy off-white head that fades and leaves nice retention and decent lacing. The aromas are loaded with caramel malts. Lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Lots of vanilla. There's a nice amount of graham cracker. Not much oak. The bourbon is extremely subtle. The flavors are very earthy. Lots of spices. More cinnamon and ginger. The bourbon characteristics seem non-existent. It's hard to tell that this was even thrown in bourbon barrels. It tastes good, but loses points for lacking the barrel presence. Mouthfeel is full-bodied, but somewhat thin. Active carbonation making it smooth and drinkable. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

This is a fine pumpkin ale. The only flaw is that the bourbon and oak characteristics seem to be absent, in my opinion. I personally don't think aging this beer will make it improve.

22oz, 10/22/2013
Riedel tulip

A: Pours a slightly hazy nice orange leading to copper. No real head. Turns into a bright white collar. Some lacing sheeting. Alcohol feet.

S: Not getting a lot of barrel. Lots of fleshy pumpkin and spices. Cinnamon and nutmeg. Vanilla. Sweet English malts. As it warms you do get the bourbon. Very nice vanilla/toffee/caramel meshing with pumpkin.

T: Touch of bitterness on the tip of the tongue. You get that fleshy pumpkin and pie like spice blend. Initially not getting much barrel character, over just general vanilla flavors from pie filling blend of spices. Some sweetness. Finish is drier than expected.

M: Medium leading to full.

Appearance is copper in color with two big fingers of head that took awhile to dissipate. The nose had pumpkin notes, but also a nostril burning dose of alcohol. There were no pumpkin notes in the flavor profile which was quite disappointing. This is just a sub-standard bourbon-aged ale.

This is one pumpkin ale that can be skipped over.
