A very dark brown, almost a dark ruby, not quite black. Great head starting out and plenty of lacing.
Good hop aroma with dark roasted and burnt malt. A good helping of pine, burnt malt and a weak coffee aroma.
The hops dominate the taste with some great earthy flavors and a little bit of pine. The roasted malt is in there hidden amongst the hops but this beer is all about the west coast hop flavor. It's got some great body. It's on the heavy side of medium with a nice oily hop flavor and feel that highlights the hops but lets the roasted malt come through.
This is a great beer to keep on hand. Tasty, interesting, and refreshing.

Appearance: Black, foamy tan head that never died, nice lacing that held on throughout the drink.
Smell: Heavy peppery hop smell with a slight hint of fruit at the rear of the nose.
Taste: Not at all what I expect from an IPA. Smooth and almost sweet at the front with a quick hit of bitter hops and a slight but not lingering hop aftertaste. Mixed in the middle is a fig/fruit sweetness that comes as quickly as it leaves.
Mouthfeel: Very light for an IPA.
Overall: Quite good for a dark IPA. I'm glad I found this on cask. I'm thinking the cask toned it down. Overall a good drink.
