Pours a deep, dark brown with tan head; it's borderline black and opaque. Hints of light sneak in now and then.
The flavor borders on the "stout" identity line, although there is no strong, roasted barley flavor coming through as a main flavor. (This is sometimes where I must admit that some of the new beer styles confuse me a bit.) A nice, pine hop note is upfront and a balanced mouthfeel and profile carries throughout. Nice, bitter, slight oily finish. It's actually pairs nicely with a veggie pizza topped with kalamata olives and feta cheese; the kalamata olives bring out the bitter hop oils and the feta adds a nice tang to mix.
Possible marriage of Peg Leg and Loose Cannon? Not a bad idea but I don't know how necessary it is in terms of Clipper City's development. I don't know if this is developing a new style or a new marketing strategy. Either way, I guess, I'm still drinking it and don't feel ripped off. But it does beg a few questions that are broader than the scope of a single beer review.
A solid, good beer but not the best of the Heavy Seas line. If you haven't tried the predecessor, Loose Cannon, do so -- it is a great interpretation of an American IPA. At the same time, for comparison, this is much more focused and flavorful than "Back in Black" by 21st Amendment.

Poured from a bottle into a chalice glass.
Appearance - Mine eyes be deceiving me! This looks like a porter/stout. If you were to tell me this was an IPA I would giggle at you profusely. I will be the first to admit that I do not have a lot of experience with Black IPAs, but this looks good. Very dark in color, tannish head.
Smell - a very earth smell, a mix of hops, grass, and a bit of a floral sweetness right at the beginning of the sniff.
Taste - a beautiful blend of hoppy bitterness and malty roastiness. I really enjoy this beer as so many IPAs focus on crushing your palate with hops at this point in time, this does not do that.
Mouthfeel - bueno
Overall - a really nice beer from Heavy Seas. I would drink it again, and probably recommend it as a try for friends.
