Pint at Alewife in Baltimore. From notes.

A - Black pour with two fingers of brown head. Wicked lace all around and a finger of retention. Good lookin' pint.

S - Roast, mild. Virtually nothing there.

T - Earthy hops, roast, vanilla, dark fruit. Mild overall. Not a ton of hop character.

M - Decent carbonation, medium to full body, good carbonation.

O/D - Meh. Plain overall. I wouldn't revisit this. Seemed really tame and not too drinkable b/c it was fairly boring. A fairly uninteresting beer.

On tap in a pint glass at King's Table on 5/6/12

Dark brown color; not much light gets through. The head is massive and took a long time to settle. One thumb of foam win the glass with an extra finger's worth domed over the top. The head thins, but holds consistently. A decent amount of clumpy lace catches eventually.

The aroma isn't too bad at all - piney green hops with zesty citric accents. The hops stand out some, but the malts have a good bit of dry roast, dark grains and a hint of cocoa.

Roast is the prominent flavor with pine hop bitterness blended in toward the middle and finish. maybe a ghost note of coffee or bitter chocolate. It's very dry throughout. All this dry roast works for me.

The body is well within medium territory. Carbonation starts off smooth with a slight agitation; regardless, full allotment of the bubbles. Resinous.

This isn't quite in line with what I like in CDAs, but it has some good qualities in terms of roastiness. I'd like more potent hops. Overall, it's not bad, but I'm not going to go looking for it.

Pours black with red brown edges with a nice tan head that dies rather quickly. Not much lacing.

Aroma is subdued. Some light caramel sweetness and tropical hops. Smells balanced if that makes sense, equally malty and hoppy.

Initially a lot like a milk stout in flavor with significant residual sweetness, followed by a nice roast flavor, with a firm bitter finish. Hop flavor is apparent, but is balanced nicely by the malt character.

Overall, this is a pretty nice beer, more American stout than black IPA. I'll drink more of this.

Nice and dark. Black brown with a slightly off-white head. Looks like a watery stout.

Malt character shines in the nose. Chalky dry coca, light herbal hops, roasty malts.

Tastes of more roasted malts, hoppy bitterness, bits of citrus but more pine and herbal hop notes. Some dark chocolate as well.

Medium bodied, smooth, with a relaxed carbonation.

A nice treat and a fair representation of the BIPA family. Definitely enjoyable and worth a try.

On tap at RFD Washington, DC, 2.16.12.

Black opaque body, one finger off-white head, small bubbles. Nose is more roast than citrus. Taste is opposite the nose, citrus over roast, no resin. Mouthfeel is light for style, medium dry finish. OK but not that great, I guess having drank Barley Brown's Turmoil you can call me jaded.

A= very dark black, fair tan head when poured carefully into a pint glass.

S= strong nose, hops and roasted malts.

T= although I'm a big fan of Loose Canon, this beer is like a black & tan that just doesn't quite come together for me in flaor. It's got the black beer flavor and the rich roasted malts and the IPA effect but....

M= clean, a bit zingy with hops bite.

O= not quite. I'll keep trying and revise my review as necessary.

Heavy Seas Black Cannon

Pours dark brown, almost black in color. Off white head. Aroma of citrusy hops, roasted malt, smoke, and a mild fruityness. In the taste, roasted malts with coffee, chocolate and faint anise. Lots of bright hop flavor, grapefruit, pine and rind. Bitterness from the roasted malt and hop is pretty well balanced with some sugary sweetness and some alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and well carbonated. Overall, this is a good Black IPA or American Black Ale or Cascadian Dark Ale, or whatever you want to call it.

On-tap at the Distillery in Savannah, GA as part of Maryland night. As a proud Terrapin, I was happy to be here, enjoying the hell outta some UTZ Crab Chips!

A - Very dark brown with a creamy tan head.
S - Slight hop aromas of grapefruit and pine resin and perhaps a bit of dark roasted malt, but it's hard to tell. Very subdued and disappointing.
T - Dark roasted malt, coffee, and a bit of chocolate provide the "black", and orange peel and pine resin hops provide the "IPA". Nice and "roasty" in the beginning with a bitter hop finish.
M - Creamy mouth-feel, with a medium body and fairly crisp carbonation.
O - A pretty nice take on the "Black IPA", but not as hoppy as the best examples I've had (Sublimely Self-Righteous and Event Horizon). Not bad.

A - Dark brown body with a huge, three finger head...the head was off white and fluffy...great retention...the head stayed for the entire beer...very nice lacing

S - The aroma was mostly of citrus and piney hops...there wasn't much of the roasted aroma, but the hop smell was nice and juicy

T - Again, the hops take over in the flavor...the are present through out the entire beer with the citrus flavors starting out and the piney flavor leaving a subtle bitterness...the roasted flavors do come out more in the flavor...they are present towards the end and they provide a different bitterness...that roasty bitterness of chocolate and coffee

M - Medium bodied...balanced bitterness from the malts and hops

O - I've been wanting to try this one and I finally had the chance...it was a good Black IPA...there are others out there that I have enjoyed more...this one needs to bring more of the "black" components into the flavor...I would go out and have this again though!

On tap at The Owl House, served into a pint glass.

This beer pours a dark mahogany almost black with tan head and decent retention leaving good lacing. Smell is a bit weak, coffee, roasted malt and very subdued hops. Taste translate the smells pretty well; black coffee, toasted grain, bitter grapefruit hop flavor. Mouthfeel was juicy and dry but a little thin/watery overall. Pretty decent for this budding style but overall this beer leaves a lot to be desired.

A - A beautiful glass of black golf. Minimal head per UBH pour (they give you your moneies worth).

S - piney hops

T - Some call this a black IPA but I agree withblack ale. The hops are laid back and well under toasted/charred malt.

D - Something in this beer has set off an attack of sneezing! Not sure what! Maybe unknown allergy?

Black body with a head that was limited to the edges. However, it was able to leave some lacing.

The smell is a piney hop with roasted malts. I even picked up a little licorice.

Good flavor of resinous pine, roasted malt, chocolate, and licorice.

It falls a little short on the mouthfeel because it had little carbonation and was thin.

Overall, a good beer from the smell and taste perspective. If they could round it out with a better mouthfeel this could be better.

on-tap at the Heavy Seas BBQ fest. reviewed from notes.

A - very dark brown. almost stout-ish. tall mocha head. leaves some nice ring lacing all the way down the glass. very appealing.

S - roasted malts. dry, bitter hops. some strong coffee and bitter chocolate. slight fruity and resin hints.

T/M - this beer is the child of a stout and an IPA. dark roasted malts and strong bitter hops. bittersweet chocolate and coffee notes. there is also the ever present fruity citrus that is prominent in IPAs. very tasty stuff. heavier in body. nice, creamy mouthfeel. finishes dry and bitter.

Overall - this was the first time I've tried this style and I was very impressed. it was basically two of my favorite styles combined. I'm looking forward to trying this again.

A-Dark brown with some ruby lowlights, a frothy mocha head and little lacing.

S-Roasted malt and earthy hops. Nice.

T-Sweet caramel and some good roastiness with a mild hop finish. A bit sweet and underhopped to me.

M-Light side of medium with fizzy carbonation.

D-Easy drinking if nothing special.

On tap at the Rattle 'N' Hum. I like black IPAs, this one had an above average mouthfeel, and some orange taste in addition to the cascadian hop that lends itself a grapefruit edge.A little chocolate and roast. A good bitterness.Black colour with some lace dots.

Appearance- Rich in color, very black with a tall two finger head.

Smell- Big Wet Pine Needle Aroma, bit of lemon juice smell. Not much else, I had really hoped for a maltier smell with the hops.

Taste- Wow! The balance really kicks in here. The Hops play a major role with a big citrus and pine resin flavor up front, But the Roasted malts come to the rescue and soothe the hop bite. This beer brings nice Balance to the regular IPA Bitter.

Mouthfeel- Rich and filling. the beer lingers nicely but not overly long.

Drinkability- The Roasted malt makes is far easier to drink than most IPA's. But all the hops make it harder to drink than most black lager style beers. So it hurts it abit. Still I could happily have about 2.

Very worth trying. Not everyday you get to have a black IPA

This was kind of a miss for me. Nothing too bad--I definitely wouldn't turn one down if offered to me--but this really didn't strike me as a Black IPA (as it's supposed to be). I know the category is "American Black Ale," but I still think of them as black IPAs--this one kind of falls into the "APA" equivalent of black IPA--a black american pale ale, if you will. The hops are a bit subdued, as is the nose, and a bit of a more assertive malt presence was noted. Not a better malt presence, just more aggressive--dark, a bit smokey too. Feel was pretty watery--needs a lot more body, in my opinion.

M: Med bodied, slight carbonation, very smooth.

Sampled at the Philly Winter Beer Festival.

A- A bubbly tan head forms atop a dark brown, nearly opaque brew. Good lacing on the sides of the plastic goblet.

S- Incredible hop aromas present. A good fruit blend in the hops including watermelon, grape, and citrus. Then before you know it cocoa powder sticks its head in. Crazy combination.

T- Hoppy and malty, with good balance. Hops hit first with above mentioned smells, then the medium roasted malts enter. Sweet tasting, and faint hints of chocolate and coffee at the end of the palatte.

M- Creamy and smooth brew. Light to medium in body.

D- My first black ale and I have to say this beer is confused. It's not sure if it wants to be an IPA or a porter. It's still pretty decent though.

Had on draft at Frisco's in Columbia, MD.

A-Pours a nice deep black with a decent brown head of foam.

S- Just a hint of coffee, no hops really noticed.

T- Good and malty, finishes nice and dry. The hops are muted by the coffee/maltiness.

M- Medium to full bodied, not overly carbonated, just well enough.

D- A decent pint, the alcohol wasn't noticed.

Had at the Fred (Taco Mac) on draft.

First off, I love Heavy Seas beer. They have seldom disappointed and I feel this is true of this one as well. I love the toasty malt flavor combined with the hops. It probably won't satisfy a true hop head, but as someone who appreciates most styles...I really like this one. I would say it's a porter with a hop attitude. Or maybe an IPA that loves malt? Either way, it's a good solid beer I could drink quite a few of.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours a fairly dark brown color with good head retention and lacing. Really get very little on the nose, just some light burnt toast and coffee. The flavor profile is better, tasting very much like a very hoppy version of loose cannot, but with coffee added. The beer delivers plenty of flavor, and the coffee and vanilla flavor combines very well with the hoppy, citrusy bitter in this beer. The beer is medium bodied, with a fairly long, impressively bitter finish. Drinkability is good, with the alcohol well integrated into the flavor profile.

Very tasty beer. Wish this were around all the time.

On-tap 2/6/2011 at Doherty's East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted dark malts, a good amount of hops, some chocolate and some fruit.

T: The taste is nicely balanced and starts out with mildly sweet flavors of chocolate and citrus. The hops presence is strong but not over-powering and there's a hearty roasted malt character. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a long time.
