Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: tdm168 on 03-09-2013

Traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

This brew pours a dark copper brown color with a minimal head which dissapates quickly. However the head does last as a collar; there is almost no lacing.

The smell is heavy with caramel, roasted and sweet malts, which is strange for a Pale Ale. There is very little hop bitterness detected in the smell.

The taste follows the nose with the heavy thick sweet malt backbone dominating throughout. There is a dry, bitter, hoppy finish but the hops are kind of lost in the malt; not idea for a Pale Ale.

The feel is thick, bready and chewy.

Overall, this is not a bad beer at all however it lacks the hop character of other Pale Ales. This is more like a malty beer with some hops. (683 characters)

Like the label says it pours brass in color but with a minimal head that is gone in a flash, somewhat dull in appearance.Aromas of caramel malts and leafy "green" English hops,I don't get much of the Cascades but do get a whiff of the Goldings and Fuggles. The feel is lighter with not much carbonation,on the flatter side.Caramel/biscuit flavors with underlying herbal notes on the palate, pretty unassuming really.I guess it isn't bad for the style but I'll just go and by a Landlord if I want a true EPA. (504 characters)

A: A medium golden beer with good clarity. The half a finger of head is rocky and off white with average head retention.

S: A mix of English and American hops and malt aromas. There is a medium amount of floral and citrus hops aromas with a bit of earthiness. The malt brings a some malt sweetness and bit of biscuit. A touch of alcohol in the background.

T: A balance of hop and malt flavors. A medium hops bitterness and hops flavors that are mostly earthy with some floral character and bit of citrus flavors. There is a light fruity fermentation character. The balance is about even with a dry finish. The aftertaste is a quick, clean hops bitterness with a touch of graininess.

M: A creamy, medium-full bodied beer with a moderately-strong carbonation.

O: This is an enjoyable, balanced beer with a satisfying hops presence balance against some malt character. (871 characters)

Flat. Almost no hop bitterness detected. Aroma was decent though. (65 characters)

Powder Monkey is a medium-dark orange color with a creamy cap of head that starts off about a finger tall and slowly drops to a heavy foam that drops a mix of patching and lacing in moderation on the walls of the glass.
The smell is a little muted and indistinct. I don't get a whole lot besides some leaf, a bit of grains, a light sweetness of caramel malt and some fruitiness, and light floral notes with a metallic overtone.
The taste is more herbal and earthy with caramel and a floral middle underneath the leafy metallic element. It's balanced, has an English character but with some American influence, and has a firm hoppiness at an appropriate strength for an English version of the style but with some sweetness to it.
The feel is bright, crisp and smooth with a leafy, tea-like dryness in a light-medium body (leaning lighter). (838 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. June 2013 notched on the bottom of the label.

A: Pours a clear golden amber with a 1 finger off white head. Lots of tiny bubbles in the body. Head sticks around for a bit and leaves some lacing.

S: Not much aroma, a bit of metallic to it. Roasted malt and dark fruits come through more as it warms.

T: A balanced approach that is suitable for the english pale ale category. Fairly malt forward but yet a decent hop backing. The malts provide a nice sweetness and the hop adds an earthy citrus tone.

M: Full bodied for how light this beer is. Ample carbonation keeps it easy on the tongue. A tad sticky from the sweetness and hops.

Overall can be a real good beer on cask as they often add fresh hops. Not as impressive on its own but perhaps a good intro for someone not hop crazy. (823 characters)

A - clear, see-through orangish amber with a thin, bubbly head that dissipates quickly

S - very faint nose; some citrsu

T - very faint caramel, some faint citrus, a mildly bitter finish, hints of sweetness throughout

M - light to medium bodied, well carbonated

This is a rather simple pale ale. It's refreshing and easily drinkable, but the flavor lacks and depth. I was bored with this beer, but it would make for a great BMC replacement beer for the newly craft-initiated. (486 characters)
