Traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a 14 oz "pint" glass. Pours translucent light amber red with a small white head. Smells of floral and piney hops, slight citrus. Tastes of watery malt profile with slight floral hop taste. Beer is heavily carbonated but still goes down alright. Overall a slightly above average beer.

I got a bottle of this beer from my good friend and old neighbor from the 'Wego. It poured a clear copper with thin white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent is nondescript....perhaps some bittering hops for the finish. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with bright malt base and subtle bitter hop finish. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.

From a beer of the month club.
L - Pour has a nice floofy just shy of 1" (slightly off) white foam head with a gorgeous copper (with hints of peace) clear body. Some effervescence observed.
S - Scent has some sweet (caramel?) malts hitting (surprisingly) first along with earthy spice hop bitterness peeking out.
T - Taste flips the smell: a more earthy and spiced hoppiness is most pronounced but the malts keep a presence to ensure things don't get out of hand.
F - Feel is medium bodied, a bit on the smoother side, and has an earthy bitterness lingering on.
O - Overall a very solid beer that comes across with a sum greater than its parts.

a solid and jazzed up english style pale ale, more hoppy than a lot of these are, and with a ton of body and substance for something this low in alcohol. also, better ice cold than warmed up even a little, which for whatever reason always seems to be the case with heavy seas beers, but im not exactly sure why. some nice english crystal malt to this, a frothy active expansive feel with a little caramel sweetness to it before the vegetal, leafy, green, bitter hops come in, even spicy for a moment, more than i am used to in the style, and easily balancing out the character of the malt in the flavor. it intensifies and turns more hop spicy when it warms up, so maybe thats part of why i like it best cold. i dont get as much english yeast character as i often look for in this style, and i do miss it, its two dimensional instead of three dimensional, and thats the weakness here for me, i like the overly hoppy taste just fine. overall a pretty solid beer, fairly old school, i never really seem to love any of the heavy seas stuff, but its all good. this probably would have been a leader in the style ten or more years ago...
