"A unique hybrid style, this ale is brewed with Belgian yeast, spiced like a Witbier, and hopped like an IPA." Brewed in the style of a Belgian IPA. Riptide White IPA is Heavy Seas' latest spring seasonal, joining the lineup in spring 2013. Available in 12 oz. 6 packs and on draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 58º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp, frothy ivory head over a moderately hazy, sediment-laden golden amber body. Carbonation is active and plentiful, retention is average at best and lacing is light and patchy. There is an incredible amount of pulpy sediment in suspension in this beer, this may be a huge turn-off for some who desire a beer with high clarity. 3.5

(Smell) Biscuity wheat malts with a pleasing dose of bitter and sweet orange peel as well as a subtle dose of coriander spice. Light citrusy, lemony and mildly grassy hop notes compliment the style graciously. The Belgian yeast strain in use keeps the Belgian notes passive enough that the less potent aromas can have voice too. Potency is mild-medium for the style, but is well-balanced. 3.75

(Taste) Up front is a very distinctively Witbier series of flavors- soft malted wheat body, a dash of bitter orange rind and a moderate dose of coriander for the peppery perk. The hop flavors pale by comparison and don't really impact the flavor much, aside from some mild drying bitterness and a squeeze of dry lemon, this is more difficult to characterize as an American IPA than it is a Belgian blonde or a witbier. The most American remnant this beer has going for it is a smooth, mildly sweet caramel malt body which rounds out the wheat malt for a little more flavor diversity without hindering the light body. Usually a sharply-flavored style one way or another, one thing this beer in particular has going for it is that it's very mild-mannered, so those who shy away from the sharpness of Belgian yeast or harsh, astringent American hops should find some redemption in Riptide. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is soft, peppery and mildly resinous. Carbonation adds a mild soft crispness for a fluffier mouthfeel. Body is medium for the style, medium overall. Alcohol presence is mild with some mellow graininess. Balance is fairly well balanced between bitterness and sweetness although both are relatively mellow, resulting in a very drinkable, albeit pedestrian representative of the style. 3.75

(Overall) I found Riptide to be one of the simplest White IPAs that I've yet had, mostly banking on the cleanliness and presentation of the Belgian Witbier notes and the general shallowness of the American IPA notes, this beer is considerably less conflicted than it could be as the emerging hybrid style seemingly demands the best and boldest of two beer worlds, and does not really get much of a representative of either, especially of the American IPA. Despite conflicting first visual impressions, Riptide happens to be one of the cleanest drinking and most quaffable White IPAs I've had yet thanks to its simplicity, which may be more of a selling point for it than not. 3.5

Exactly what I expect the Brewer was working for. An interesting spiced IPA with tangy tastes on the first sip. No aftertaste, no bitters noticeable. Almost appears as a Golden Ale and not heavily carbonated to my taste. The aroma is unique and brings to mind aromas from my time in Germany drinking the house brew.
Fairly high abv (to American standards) is not evident in the mouthfeel or taste.

A - Orange hue, with tons of head and sticky lace. Unfiltered with sediment floating all over throughout the beer. As good as it gets for appearance!

S - Hmm, aroma is not real strong. Citrus, oranges, belgian yeast and candy. I've got to dig down low to get the aroma though

T - Unfortunately, the beer is not as good as it looks. Very mild for a 7.25 abv. Spices and malty, but nothing sticks out...is even a big bland.

M - Highly carbonated.

O - Looks great, but disappointed after that. Probably doesn't help that I have recently had a few other White IPA's that knock this one into the dirt

On-tap 11/10/2013 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.

S: The aroma contains piney hops, fruity citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of citrus and caramel. Then a strong hops presence comes in. The malt character is hearty and provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and a little smooth but there’s a bit of chalkiness to it, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, decent representation of style, this is a solid flavorful beer to drink for a long time.

Serving Type -Bottle

Appearance - Golden copper tan, yellow with a minimal 1/8 inch head and minor lacing.

Smell - Some hops, yeasts, actually has a tripel like spice aroma. Orange, grapefruit, some lemon.

Taste - Belgium spices, yeasts mixed in with hops. Spices add the peppery notes, yeasts add the sweet and tart Belgium flavors. Hops are mild and offer some orange and grapefruit flavors. Lemon and apple is a main flavor in the finish.

Mouthfeel - You get the spices and hops at first sip right on the tongue. The palate gets more fruits, yeasts and spices with some tart apple. The aftertaste is tart, peppery and orange.

Overall - Decent, pretty standard for the style. Not great, not bad, nothing new for the style. Easy to drink and not overboard with flavors. Worth a try but there are better examples of this style out there.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. From outside the bottle, you can see some floaties rolling around the bottom of the bottle.

A - A moderate pour yields almost not head the fizzles away quickly. Lacing is practically non-existent and there is just barely a ring around the top. Color is dark gold and is mostly clear besides the sediment which is evenly floating around the beer. The latter part is actually quite cool looking.

S - Smells a lot like a spicy wheat ale. Smells very sweet. Don't get much on hops

T - A good marriage between a belgian ale and an IPA. It definitely tastes wheaty up front but finishes with a good hop bitterness. Very juicy.

M - Carbonation is spot on for the style.

O - A very interesting ale. I think this may be the first of the style that I have had and I will definitely seek out more in the future.

Bottle from Potsdam IGA. 'Purchase before Aug 2013.'

A - Totally cloudy orange. One finger of white head. Good carbonation. Minimal spotty lace and a mild film of retention.

S - Sweet spicy with some hop compliments. Orange. Nice.

T - Sweet spice, orange, some sort of hop note. Notable witbier character with banana, orange, sweet spice.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, decent bitterness.

O/D - Definitely tastes like a slightly hopped up wit. Age might be holding this back though. Hop character is a bit...generic, with no real flavour characteristics coming out. Decent though.

12oz Bottle from the Potsdam NY IGA for $3

Appearance - Hazy yellow colour with a small size fizzy white coloured head. It's hard to make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some fairly decent lacing. The head lasted for around 3 minutes.

Smell - Breads/grains, coriander/clove, citrus, hops

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste breads, grains, and hops. There is also some lemon, clove, and a bit of banana.

Overall – A pretty solid brew but nothing all that exciting. Not something I'd go out of my way to pick up again, but it was still worth trying once.

Enjoyed this brew out of snifter glass

A: Pours a golden hue with a nice white head that slowly dissipates leaving a decent trail.

S: Belgian yeast and wheat aroma.

T: Similar to the smell there is a wheaty flavor that is dominated by the Belgian yeast.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Decent IPA – nothing I would grab again.

poured from a 12oz bottle into a standard pint glass. Best by August 2013, so just made it.

Poured a golden yellow, with good carbonation. Head was bright white, thinning to just a covering. very little lacing.

Nose was mostly yeasts with a little spice.

Taste was pretty good. Hops had faded, most likely to being at the edge of it's limits. Spices, coriander, were still strong though. Abv of 7.25 started to come through towards the end.

Mouth was about medium, spices everywhere, quite refreshing. Finish was on the dry side.

Overall, an okay summer offering. Not something I would seek out outside the summer months. Would be interesting trying closer to it's bottling date to see how the hops affect the taste, although in my experience, (and perhaps I don't care for that style) more hops have not necessarily meant a better beer.
