This place was new to us, having opened since our last visit in Summer 03. We got lost finding it but well worth the odyssey. Take a map of some kind. Rue de Bouchers is a long street with sidewalk restaurants that I believe parallels the North side of Grand Place. We ended up reaching Rue de Bouchers by walking through the "Gallery" a covered mall-like walkway from Grand Place.
Excellent and extensive beer list, but its worth studying up beforehand and having a list of beers you would like to try, then seeing if they have them, to take advantage of their selection.
We focussed on beers we could not get in Chicago and tried the whole Mortal line. I also got a strong dark and sweet Silly St Christophe that was fantastic. The beertender who served us was very knowledgable (the other bartenders quickly deferred and let him serve us after trying to deal with our very specific lists). The atmosphere was zoo/frat partyish
late on a Thursday night, but would probably be much saner at earlier times of the day. Think groups of people drinking Corona. Yes really.
It seems to be the new hot drink in Belgium and England.
During busy times, if you can get a table outside on the alley, then you can enjoy a bit more of a relaxed time, but this is not a bar with the right atmosphere to really unwind, savor or reflect.
And especially don't go on Thursday nights when they have live "gigs". Its smoky, loud, crowded and there is a SURCHARGE on all beers! We returned on Sunday night for a second round and were much happier with the atmosphere then.
Nice selection of cheeses as well. We got a Mardesous Faggotin which was a washed rind cheese with just a bit of funk to make it interesting.
