My 50th Beerfly review. Whoo hoo!
I visitied the Delirium Cafe immediately after visiting the Cantillon Brewery in Brussels 6 29 09. My wife and I had just met a friend of ours, Dan, prior to going there. Both Dan and I knew about this place and we wanted to check it out.
Atmoshphere. Well this starts before you even arrive as you have to make your way down an uneven cobblestone street with tables and chairs from nearby restaurants jutting out into the street. The streets around here are certainly pedestrian streets but they are teeming with activity with lots of lights, sounds, smells and people trying to get you to sit down for something to eat. So we arrive at the place and find that the upstairs is virtually empty but there are beer signage which is very cool all throughout the upstairs. Downstairs is the smoke and teenager filled basement that was promised when I read reviews here on BA. Sure enough, there was some kid (about 23 years old) drinking what looked like a fishbowl of beer and the place was populated by signage of all types, hardwood chairs and barrels for tables. This place certainly has a certain vibe but that vibe might be: Come here to get drunk on some of the best beer in the world.
Quality: Well it is hard for me to mark them down for quality since they have 2,004 beers and serve nearly everything in appropriate glassware but I will mark them down a touch for being so smoke filled and so much like a "get drunk" bar. The place is a bit too rustic, especially with the old appearing wooden barrels for tables.
Service. Just fine but then again I was not looking for too much in the way of service.
Selection. Well, the best in the world. 2,004 beers served mostly in appropriate glassware.
Food. Did not try.
Value. Just fine. I had a Saison Dupont and it was something like $6.

Fantastic atmosphere (though the average age of the crowd made me feel my years) and a great selection! I know this is one of the more popular and touristy beer bars in the area and has a reputation for being like a frat house at times, but I love it and think it's an essential stop in Brussels.
