Pours like strong coffee except it has virtually no aroma. Very minimal head forms as you pour this brew.
It is a black, opaque beer. It may even absorb light it is so densely black. As mentioned earlier, there is no nose with this beer.
The taste is sweet and fudgy. It's like drinking a rich flourless chocolate torte. There is not a hint of hops, which would kill the sweetness. It is not a thick mouthfilling brew. It seems a bit watery on the toungue. Well, it is a liquid, but I would think that the feel should match the flavor. Unfortunately, it does not.
All in all, I would say that this is a beer best consumed in small quantities. Considerably less than twelve ounces was enough for me. Fortunately, I had a buddy the polish it off.

Mackeson's Tripple XXX Stout is a sweet Milk Stout and my favorite beer, even though I have not been able to purchase one for the past (i am guessing) 6 - 7 years. Since that time they have not sold the beer in MA and the distribution is very, very limited. I have heard about cases being shipped for $60 with the shipping cost.
I first tasted this beer in the Sunset Grille in Boston.
A. - Dark good head
S. - Sweet
T - Sweet dark stout
O - Excellent

Served chilled before drinking.
Appearance - Virtually black, opaque with a big 2 finger head that has solid staying power.
Smell - Coffee, bread, mild sweetness from perhaps some caramel. Not as potent as as expected all things considered.
Taste - Here's where this beer shines. Nice sweet mixture of coffee, chocolate, Although these flavors seem a bit subdues, it blends excellently with the overall roasty malt characteristics. The chocolate flavor in particular is more of a milk chocolate flavor. The bread flavors tend to meld together with a burnt toast flavor as well.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, medium bodied with moderate high carbonation.
Overall - Nice stout that is a touch sweeter than I prefer, but very tasty nonetheless and I understand why this beer was the "original" milk stout.

This may be THE classic milk/sweet stout, although technically XXX is a stronger version brewed in Trinidad, not the same exact beer as the lower ABV version from the UK. But whatever. Mackeson XXX pours an inky black hue, maybe just shy of dark brown, with red highlights at the bottom of the glass. Ample mocha colored head but this breaks down quite quickly. Smells like coffee extract, brown toast, iron oxide, a touch of smoke, a whiff of earthy English bittering hops. Palate is chocolate milk, butterscotch toffee, cold coffee, a little raisin and walnut, ample malt character and one can taste those earthy English hops just a bit as well. Silky smooth creamy body but not thick at all, high drinkability for such a dark beer. Finish is sweet and malty but not cloying ... There's a little husky astringency which provides a foil to the other components on the palate. My high ratings may reflect some bias towards sweet dark beers, and this one is super sweet, minimally bitter and not a dark chocolate and coffee bomb like some well-crafted stouts hailing from other styles. A pleasant diversion from my usual quest for hoppy and bitter (or malty and thick ... Although I suppose this one does evoke a chocolate and coffee milkshake).
