While in grad school, for a long time, this was the most interesting beer I could find living in Hartford, CT. I had it routinely, it was low budget and made quiet nights easier. I think it was Mackeson Triple and Smuttynose Pale Ale, and at the bars we drank pitchers, quickly. Then I got my head out that door.
Anyhow, I thought I would revisist this, with a more experienced palate. Not the beer I remember entirely. This is less potent than I remember. It's good enough to pass up other options when something rich is desired, because that's where this excels. The pour is almost inky, very dark brown. The head is creamy. Nothing really exciting in the smell. The flavor is malty with hints of cocoa. The mouthfeel is not the creaminess I would had expected, so it's a little disappointing in this department. Easy to drink, but could get boring.
If you know what I mean about the flavor of cocoa in good coffee (not mocha), that's what we have here. I recommend you try it out if obvious chocolate character and sweetness is not interesting to you.

Pours a deep dark brown with a finger of beige head that retains quite nicely and leaves a good amount of lace behind on the glass. The nose is mildly roasty. The roast in the flavor profile is very mild and is almost completely overwhelmed by the sugary sweetness that lasts into the finish.
I know that milk stouts are supposed to be sweet but the best of this style balance the sweetness with some nice roasted malt flavor. This offering falls too far into the sweet category for my liking.
