Zunft Kölsch
on tap @ Köbes, Wilhelmstrasse 41a, 10963 Berlin
,3l glass for €2,60

On a cross-city trip to visit the Berlinisch Galerie I was lucky to stumble upon "Köbes", a Kölsch-Kneipe. It's not much to look at in all honesty, but there's a certain charm to it, and they do pretty well because they're right across the street from the Topography of Terror and not far from Checkpoint Charlie. The food was good, and fairly inexpensive, but the beer was great! It's the only beer they pour, and they apparently pour a lot of it, so it was quite fresh.

Zunft Kölsch is light gold in color beneath a two fingered head of creamy bright white foam. The head retention is quite good, and the lacing exceptional - as I drained my glass it had almost full sheets of lace and even tiny rings that marked each stopping point.

The aroma is of lightly sweet pilsner malt threaded-through with floral and delicately spicy and grassy hops, and just a mild background hint of fruitiness. Quite nice! Fresh and bright.

The flavor is, of course, as the aroma suggests, and it's got a mid-level bitterness that balances it but doesn't really go beyond. I guess I'd call it "stiff". It has a dryish finish that's lightly herbal.

A Kölsch is intended to be remarkably drinkable, and it was. Worth seeking out if you can find it fresh.

Honestly, I've been thinking it isn't quite fair for us in the States to review the Euro brewed beers. They'll never arrive in their freshest state and who knows what light, heat, etc. they experience on the trip from brewery to my glass. Anyway...I poured from the bottle in traditional Cologne form into a stange to give it every chance possible to shine. Decent head but not a trace of lace. Aroma fell flat. Color was a decent straw, light golden hue. Taste was average. Sames goes for palate and mouthfeel. No lingering aftertaste. Overall pretty average. I won't go out of my way for it but I wouldn't pass if someone offered me one. I suspect that it is much better served locally, enjoying in a German cafe.

A: Golden with a slight copper tinge, amazingly clear filtration, no carbonation in the body, a huge 5 finger, slightly yellow billowy head of foam with excellent head retention.

S: Pilsener like hops, fresh hay, straw, light with fresh malts. Slight white grape juice scent.

T: Starts very much like a German or Check Pilsener reminiscent of Pilsener Urquell with a bready malt, corn, straw like quality, then what seems first like a metallic quality but turns clearly into white grape juice, much like white wine without the alcohol bite. Very mild and smooth. Not many hops, but where they are present is all the way through in a very mild way, contributing to the grape like quality.

M: Medium smooth body, virtually no carbonation in spite of huge gusher when opened and major foam.

O: Great brew, the only Kolsch I’ve been able to find in China. Looks like a nitrogen based drink much like a Boddington’s Pub ale- major foam and the dissipation of the foam in the glass looked like a tornado of whirling clouds which slowly settled to a virtually carbonation free drink with a large foamy head. Got a keg of this. I think its great and look forward to enjoying it over the next several days.

Poured two fingers of head on a clear, golden colored body.
The aroma has a clean grain smell with just a touch metallic.
The taste is lacking body. Watery and grainy with a little malt sweet.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
The less than good flavor really brings this beer down.

BBD: 22/10/13

Bought this for the sexy blackletter label, needed a wildcard for a three way Kölsch tasting. This took 2nd place after Lowdive Zuström and ahead of Reissdorf in 3rd.

Transparent gold with racing carb streams, compact inch of soapy white foam, leaves behind minimal spotty lacing in the glass.

Papery malt aroma, vague grass element of noble hops that's barely there.

Lightly bitter taste, and seemingly the most hoppy of the three tasted. Papery malt taste, pretty ho-hum, but with a bitter grassy edge to it. Carbonation seemed ample, finished dry. Overall ok, would try a fresher sample but wouldn't go out of the way for it.

Bottle purchase at Story Tavern in Burbank, CA.

Pours a hazy yellow with a foamy off-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and some fruity aromas. Taste is much the same with a fruity flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty and refreshing.

Comes out of the tap a beautiful clear golden amber with a thick, fine-bubbled off-white head. Aroma is not strong but fruity, rather sweet and a bit malty. Flavor has a strong apple overtone, rather like applesauce or cider, with hoppy and malty hints. Texture has decent, if average, body and fizz. Overall, not great but worthy of a try. Happy Oktoberfest!

This one started out great, Had a traditional kolsch smell followed by that banana bready clove taste that turns into a caramel spicy aftertaste. It's such a traditional beer and one that sticks to the nature of what it is. It is an instant favorite of mine. Too bad this one is not very common or else this might be a usual for me.

Poured from a bottle into a Stange glass.

Look - light golden color, clear, with about two fingers' worth of frothy cream-colored foam that dissipates slowly.

Smell - earthy and floral in aroma. A bit like a pilsener but more subdued.

Taste - very smooth tasting, and slightly dry. There is some bite that you get from the hops, which shows up around the early middle of the taste. Slightly sweet finish.

Mouthfeel - very smooth and well-balanced. Not leaning too far on the creamy or watery sides.

Overall - very interesting brew and good taste. Seems like it might be a pretty good representative of the style.

Appearance is a slightly hazy orange yellow with a sparkling thin to nil head. Smell has an earthiness to it with corn and some hay in the background . Taste seems the same as of the aroma that is very refreshing with a moderate hop and malt backbone. Mouthfeel is light to medium with a good spike of carbonation. A nice beer for the style, easy to drink and flavorful.

International Green Week, Berlin 2012: Hall 12, the hall dedicated to German breweries and food to go with beer. We find a table and seats by the Andechs bar, leave the womenfolk to keep the area safe and we blokes start to forage for beers. Loads of breweries and beers to choose from and I eventually stumble across a Kolsch brewery bar: OK I’m not the biggest Kolsch fan in the world, but I decided to give this one a try.

0.25 Litre glass, tall as you’d expect: bright straw yellow body, full white head of bubbles, looks clean and refreshing, bubble trails rising to join the head throughout the tasting.

No real aroma to talk about, some hints of hops and grains but otherwise nothing: typical Kolsch really.

The mouthfeel is crisp and invigorating (I’d just had a very bland Landbier), light yet with some oomph. Tart, sharp and thirst quenching; without complexity or any true depth. The beer isn’t flavoursome or exciting but it does the business if you’re thirsty. Hop base with very little malt presence for balance, however it seemed right at the time.

Now back home I can check my Kolsch reviews: this is my 6th within this style and my average score is 3.29, this is well above average in my eyes. This beer review has also reminded me of when I used to visit Koln to stay with friends: we hit almost all the brewpubs over the years: well before BA came on the scene. Friends now moved, but I must go back one day.

Pours straw to yellow with brilliant clarity. Has a pillowy white long-lasting head. Lots of streams of bubbles racing to the top.

Aroma is a light pils malt aroma, a whiff of corn-like sweetness. Also a light apple and lemony, possibly a bit sulfury smell. All understated and pleasant.

Flavor matches the aroma, with a light lemony fruitiness. Moderate noble hop bitterness that does not linger. Crisp, dry finish that has a slight tartness.

Light body, smooth, very easy drinking, but still flavorful. Moderately high carbonation, but appropriate for the style.

Understated, but more complex flavor than I would have guessed. Thirst quenching and delicious.

Poured into a Deschutes tulip at 45 degrees.

Clarity is good, straw colored body topped by a bright white two finger width head. Plenty of little bubbles floating vigorously to the top. Good retention, not much lacing to speak of however.

Smells like hay, straw, and corn. A little bit of a mineral aroma as well. Smells a little bit grassy as well, with some slight hints of stale bread.

Tastes like a fairly standard Kolsch, nice and light on the palate but has some bright notes to speak of the kind of taste as if you're tasting a field. I've had a lot more complex Kolsches though and a little bit bolder flavors from other companies.

Mouthfeel is done quite well. Consistency feels right. Good level of spritzy carbonation but doesn't get overly abrasive in the mouth.

Overall this is a nice Kolsch, but nothing to really get too overly excited about. I'd recommend giving it a whirl if you haven't tried it.

500 mL bottle,

A: Pours a clear gold with a medium white head, solid retention, no lace.

S: Grassy hops, nice bready sourdough malt. Classic German ale smell.

T: Bready malt with a pretty big hop character for a German brew. Well balanced.

M: Medium-bodied, crisp and smooth.

O: My 4th true German made Kolsch. I like the beer. Not as complex as some of the other Kolsches I've had, but I enjoyed this half liter.

What a rare (or at least seldom-reviewed) drink.

A: Had a 0.4 liter serving on tap in a kolsch glass. Color was pale yellow with no head. I had to stir it up to get any bubblies.

S: A little bit of green apple with a lot of buttered popcorn, especially when I breathed out of my nose after tasting. Also smelled sweet, almost floral, with a light biscuity malt.

T: Light grainy with a moderate herbal hop finish. A bit of tartness throughout plus the acetaldehyde made it pretty fruity and refreshing. Would've been more refreshing if it were more carbonated.

M: Again, wou;d've liked more carbonation, but it was as easy to drink as any other kolsch. Slight alcoholic warmth going down.

This is a very good kolsch, but not close to the best I’ve had.

Gold, it has a medium-big, off-white head steadily shrinking to a ring and no lace.

Aroma is a nice full fruity grain, hints of yeast, lemon, sulphur and herbs.

Taste is a pleasant, firm, full fruity grain with hints of bread and a firm but light zesty-grassy-herbal bitterness. Overall, it is dryish. It’s a solid kolsch, but not great and a bit thin in character compared to some others.

A-Pours straw yellow with an inch of fizzy brilliant white head. Leaves soapy lacing.

S- Smells like a cheap macro from about a foot away. Super sweet malts and cornflakes.

T/M-More of the same. Cornflake-esque maltiness. An unpleasant metallic note mid-palate. The finish is bitter and unfocused. Not offensive, but certainly not memorable. Body is denser than I associate with the kolsch style. Light to medium bodied, with moderate spritzy carbonation.

O-Blah.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt.

Into a 0.2L stange. Perfectly clear pale yellow with an inch of white froth, pretty standard of the style. Clean, light, grainy nose. Little bit of sweet malt and boiled corn. Not exceptionally aromatic, but that's standard of the style. Very light and refreshing palate, on the dry side and pretty bitter. Grainy, crisply crackery malt, herbal-grassy hop flavors. The dryness makes it incredibly easy to drink. Nice quaffable stuff.

Ay caramba with em kolsches. contrary to common logic, you always know what you're gonna get.

Because the pour is poor, and doesnt really wary among them. The nose is as mediocre every time you just pick oth the next one from the fridge and realize you're stuck with a few more.

And the taste, watery, pisswatery....with lemon. whoop-dee-doo, only one kölsch to go now.
