Notes/Commercial Description:
An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

A - Pours a pale yellow that is crystal clear. One and a half white fluffy head with lots and lots of bubbles. Oddly...not much retention and zero lacing

S - Whew...better like bananas! Very heavy on the bananas up front. Smells sweet. Definate clove on the back as well.

T - Very much like the aroma. Very heavy on the banana flavor followed by clove. Very good flavor overall....if you like banana

M - Extremely light drinking beer. Bubbles tend to cling to your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

O - A very good hef. East drinking with a ton of flavor. No complaints. I dont want that much banana in my beer al lthe time but at times it would be a very nice change

Thanx to RocketCityVol.

Disclaimer: at first I'll have to admit that I'm not a true hefeweizen fan, but after this, I could really jump on that bandwagon really quick. Here goes.

Into a weizen glass.

A: hazy golden orange colored body with a thick two fingered white foamy head that dies within about a minute, some light foamy lacing graces the sides of the glass adequately

S: almost the best aroma combination of a clove to coriander to banana esters - sweet to spiciness - wow, I'm enthralled

T: sweet to spicy through the cloves and coriander to the banana esters; the aftertaste is pretty much exactly the same and just as good; nice quick dry spicy sweet finish

M: light to medium, mostly sessionable for the most part, carbonation finishes just right for a hefeweizen as there's a harsh component and a smooth component that balances just right

O: wow, where the heck did this come from? I had and still have a long time want of having their Sue and maybe someday I will, but this is absolutely awesome and will certainly have this again as its very good for its style by an American brewer

Original 2007 review (on-tap):
Pours to a nice head and cloudy yellow color. Aroma is traditional hefe--banana and clove. Flavor is typical hefe with spicy clovey notes and banana throughout. Nice wheat bite. Reminiscent of many other well-made American hefeweizens. An easy drinking, well-made hefeweizen.

Follow-up 2014: Just picked up a sixer at a Tupelo Kroger. Date bottled 01/22/14. Tasted fresh and the review holds true for the bottled product. The way a Hefe should taste. Wish I bought a whole case now... my hefe-loving wife will love this. Pick up some today.

Yazoo please head west. Arkansas and Oklahoma will support you.

I went on a Hefeweizen tirade for many weeks. This one is a little disappointing as it doesn't taste of a Hefeweizen one bit. It has a mid body Hefeweizen feel but only after an overly hoppy attack that you don't expect. If you're in the Hef game for a mellow, wheat feel-this beer will take you off guard.

A - Pours a cloudy dark yellow that produces a big puff of white head that retains to a steady collar.

S - Banana Peel, clove, coriander, fruity.

T - Huge Fruit presence, banana peel, bread dough, phenolic. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel.

O - This is a solid Hefe - smooth and crisp - easy to drink.

From 08/09/13 notes. Had this at Rippy's, among other places, over the weekend in Nashville. 12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

a - Pours a hazy, bright yellow color with one inch of bright white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of bananas, bready malts, dough, spices, cloves, and light pepper. Nice bananas, would have liked a little less spice.

t - Tastes of bananas, wheat, dough, biscuit malts, light fruity malts, cloves, spice, light earthy and floral notes. More fruit than the nose and less pepper and spice, so a step up for me.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Pretty smooth and easy to throw a few back.

o - Overall a really nice hefeweizen; glad to see this all over Broadway as I had a few. Nice fruity taste and smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Would definitely order it again and a great summer beer.

Had on tap at Jim'Nick's BBQ in Murfreesboro,TN.Came in a standard pint glass a dull hazed medium golden with a thinner white head atop, knowing it wasn't in the proper glassware kept the score from going lower on the appearance.clove and banana aromas stood out most and they were pretty assertive, light toasted wheat underneath.alighter feel in the mouth but it made the beer go down even easier than many of the style.Banana and yeasy phenol flavors with a refreshing little lemony twang in the finish wich gave it a little complexity. Not a bad beer, not a style i go to very often but Iam sure it beats the TN heat in the summer.

Bottle purchased from Frugal Mcdougal's, Nashville, TN. Poured into Pint Glass

As an avid Hefe drinker, this is a damn good beer. Does it taste like it's German counterparts? No. It is most definitely an american hefeweizen, but a damn good one at that. I would put it second behind only SN's Kellerweis as the best American Hefe i've had.

Looks like a normal hefe, unfiltered with nice yeast suspension. nice white head.

Smells like a typical hefe, heavier on the banana presence than a German one, and also some citrus and heavy coriander notes.

The taste is extremely banana heavy, more so than any other Hefe i've had. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I personally love the taste of this beer, but it is pretty unique when you compare them to almost any other Hefeweizen, German or American. Taste is sweet and short, doesn't really last long, as it's a little watery, but it's still balanced pretty decent. Somewhere in the middle I also was getting some subtle vanilla and citrus notes. Basically this tastes like what you would expect a "light" hefe to taste like, with extra banana. It's very drinkable, and very refreshing as are most wheat beers.

Overall I would buy this again, as I like supporting local breweries. Living in Nashville, I can get this as fresh as you can possibly get... which is pretty important considering how fast wheat beers go sour. This is a very unique hefe, I found it rather enjoyable in it's own way, but not a solid representation of the style. If you really want to experience what a true Hefeweizen tastes like, start with a Weihenstephaner, and from there expand to Franziskaner, Paulaner, and even Ardinger.

The beer pours like the typical hefeeweizen. Cloudy, hazy and grainy with a thin white head and spotty lace. The smell is faint and grainy with a back draft of banana, cloves and pepper. The taste is a bit thin and watery up front, but perfectly balanced between the banana and cloves. hints of black pepper and a tart hop bite in the background. A bit thin and watery, but a creamy swallow. Simple, refreshing, and easy to drink.

12 oz into nonic

A: Super cloudy, 1.5 inch of fluffy white foam, yellow/orange hue with very present carbonation

S: big time banana, clove, fresh bready yeast aroma

T: banana bread, wow a lot of banana, slight bubblegum, strong yeast, clove in the finish, a bit of a sour quality

M: Very bright and there is a strong bite about 1/2 way through the sip, feels a bit thin at the end

O: very nice, especially if you like the banana thing. I wish the mouthfeel had a bit more substance across the full sip

16 ounce pint - Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Appearance: Clouded, gold body with a modestly sized, white head.

Smell: Freshly opened sack of Big League Chew, this beer is heavily scented of bubblegum. Oh, sure, you can drag out some notes of wheat, lemon, and clove tea, but it's predominately bubblegum.

Taste: A lightly sweet taste of that malted wheat, a little nibble of french bread, then, some lemon. Fresh clove hits. As with the aroma, the bubblegum character totally overrides the other flavors. Nil bitterness. Yep, it's pretty much bubblegum here, though there is a rebound of clove at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Falls just barely shy of being medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Hubba Bubba Hefe.

A big white head quickly falls into a thin lacing above a clear pale golden colored beer.

Banana, cloves, and other little spices aroma with a little bit of yeast coming through on this light bodied beer.

Light banana, light cloves and maybe some other similar spices with some added light bread like malts taste.

The aftertaste on this beer is a light dryish with just a bit of the spicy notes hanging around, and it seems to turn to a slight banana as time goes by.

Seems to be an alright lighter hefeweizen, but still a light to much banana for me.

a clean golden / orange-yellow pour.. slight amount of head which vanished immediately and completely.
smells of apples, grapes, raisins and banana.. interesting...
the taste starts off with your typical hefe, then jumps to a fruity strawberry banana flavor.. really tasty for a wheat beer.. and i'm barely getting any breadyness from the yeast. thinking outside the box, yazoo!
light body, high carbonation, sweet yet crisp and refreshing.
really good for the style, but i do wish it had some more visible complexion. it looks like it's just a flat beer. no lacing, no retention, carbonation isn't all that visible after the first minute (but it IS still actually there)

I had this on-tap at a killer bar in downtown Nashville.

A: Poured a wheaty, cloudy mustard yellow color, with a 1/2 finger retentative head. Look like a standard unfiltered Hefe.

S: I got some clove and banana, but this was somewhat muted overall, compared to many Hefeweizens on the market.

T: Crisp and highly drinkable, perfect for a hot summer day, with bubble gum notes. Once again though, not too powerful.

M: Yeasty and cushiony in terms of carbonation levels, with no booze to speak of, and a good amount of lacing.

O: This was a standard entry into the Hefe lexicon, but sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered!

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a white head. Amazing banana aroma to this and almost as much bubblegum. Smells like overripe banana bread. Sort of light in the wheat/malt department, but I’m fine with that. The flavor has a touch of wheat bread, but otherwise it’s all banana and bubblegum with a bit of clove. Really tasty stuff. Light in body with a crisp carbonation.

On tap at the Yazoo brewery, served in a tall Hefeweizen glass. It arrived looking cloudy and golden wheat in color. A rocky white head filled the top of the glass. Great looking beer for the style.

The aroma shows lots of breadywheat and banana flavors to it. The yeasty, clove like spices are a little more reserved in it, which I like. Very nice for the style, and especially nice on this hot day.

In the taste I again get lots of banana and sweet, bready, wheat malts. A little clove spice comes out in the finish. Very drinkable and refreshing beer overall.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style with moderate carbonation. Overall I thought it was a very solid beer of the style. I had this a few times over the weekend in Nashville and having it on tap, straight from the brewery, in the appropriate glass was a significantly better experience than the other times I had it around town. Maybe it was just the atmosphere or how hot I was, but that was my experience at least.

Received a 12 FL. OZ. Bottle from a friend from Nashville, TN. Poured from the Blue/Yellow labeled bottle w/ a Blonde Women with wild hair holding a beer into a 12oz Snifter Glass. Has a BOTTLED ON DATE of FEB 03 12 on the side of the label.

Aroma- Has a great amount of German malt and also citrus. TONS of citrus at that. Light spices.

Appearance- Pours a .5 finger head that has average retention. Has a deep golden/light orange colored body with tons of cloud. Leaves good lacing behind.

Flavor- Sweet, light citrus, and good spice. Easy characters of malt and leaves with a sweet finish. No hops present.

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, High Carbonation, Effervescent, and leaves only malts on the palate.

Overall Impression-Very nice for a Hefe that won a 2004 GABF award. I hope to pick up more of this when in Nashville this summer to enjoy during the heated summer months.

Tasted On: 03-25-2012
Freshness: Bottled on 03-08-2012
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Weizen Glass
Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

Color is a semi-hazy straw yellow, topped by a white head of tight bubbles between 2 and 3 fingers. Both head retention and lacing are fair.

Aromas are first and foremost of banana, followed by some zesty notes like lemon. Other smells are clove spices and of bubblegum fruitiness and sweetness.

Taste is of banana fruitiness and delicately sweet wheat malt. Crisp, with a light amount of tart and no bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with carbonation on the high end. Aftertaste is fruity and slightly citrus-like and spicy.

Overall I'd rate this a refreshing and delightful wheat beer for the spring and summer.

Still technically winter but a nice hot day makes me dream of summer, so why not a nice hefe. Thanks to pitasoup (reddit) for this one. And screw this lame-o screw cap.

Pours a light fizzy head that gets to almost 1 finger on my upside down pour bit the head fades almost instantly to a light covering like it was a fake head, hazy but I can see the column of sediment swirling in the middle of the murky golden wheat colored beer.

Nose is fairly typical hefe, wheat, citrus, a nice banana, hint of clove spices, a fruity and light malty aroma.

Taste is also typical, wheat flavors though a bit watery, some banana and hint of clove, slightly yeasty, although juicy. a bit malty, some light citrus, zest, bit fruity. Not much else going on but it's pretty much what it should be maybe slightly watery. Finish is fairly dry, lingering citrus, wheat, and light yeast.

Mouth is lighter bodied, good carb.

Overall not bad, nothing really wrong, typical hefe flavors, nice sumer wheat beer.

Bottled date was Nov 30 2011.

Appearance is a cloudy light gold to straw with a hefty white head. The head faded quickly, leaving very little lacing. Clove scents were prominent, along with some lemon, but there was also a bitter metallic scent that was a bit off-putting. Thankfully, the taste was much better - typical hefe flavors of banana and clove, and it had a nice bubble-gum sweetness that I really enjoy in a good hefe. Carbonation was high, typical for the style. This has to be on the short list of good American-brewed hefeweizens.

pils glass requested, into german mug as it'll have to do.

Nice bright golden color, big foamy head that is 3-fingers plus. Very creamy, slightly off white. Takes a while to settle down.

One whiff and I get a lot of honey/floral sweetness and some strong yeast notes.

Taste confirms. Mild banana and the yeast backs off a bit. Very mellow but enjoyable. Mildly grassy, some twinge of tart apple too. Pleasing finish.

A bit light for the style but pretty refreshing. I enjoyed this one.

Poured into a Samuel Smith pint glass on 11/30/11

Bottled July 2011

Clear, pale light straw color. Lots of cling to the inside of the glass briefly. Two fingers of porous foam condense to 1/4th inch and thins out to nothing from there. No lace.

Pleasant enough aroma of prairie grass, clove, tangy wheat, ripe apple and banana. Yeast overtones emerge periodically and there's a slight dirtiness underneath. Flavor-wise there is a pretty strong grassy hop kick that seems out of place, especially paired with high carbonation found here (the feel pushes well past "crisp" and gets right to "sharp"). Clove, tangy apple and banana, too. Interestingly enough, the wheat seems subdued; I'd appreciate more of it. Finishes dry and grassy. It has a weird coating feel, too.

Though not an altogether reprehensible beer, I think it falls pretty far from the style mark. Even labeled as an American Pale Wheat it would still need several fine tunings to make it stand out.
